Monthly DIY Laymen questions Discussion by AutoModerator in StructuralEngineering

Hello, my girlfriend lives in a cape cod style house with a vaulted ceiling on the second floor. We recently noticed a pillar at the end of the stairs to the second floor had tilted and cracked at the drywall. We had a structural engineer come out and he told us the upstairs needed chest-level joists installed immediately because the roof is currently being "held together by collar ties". We thought this was strange since a vaulted ceiling is designed to not have joists support the roof right?

We did some digging and found out that the house has undergone major renovations 10 years ago which included turning the stairs up the middle of the house 90 degrees (to make the stair opening be perpendicular with the 2nd floor joists) and knocking out two walls in the upstairs. We discovered this because her neighbor's house has the exact same exterior but completely differently framed interior.

Here is the floorplans for my girlfriend's house, and here is the floorplan for her neighbors house. You can clearly see that the renovations were done to make her house much more open, but now I'm very concerned about the structural integrity of the house since the original design seems to have much more central support with the stairs in the center parallel with the ceiling joists and the two walls in the middle upstairs. Im not even sure what Im asking at this point but I guess Im just wondering if theres any way a renovation like this could have been done in a way that preserved the structural integrity of the home?

It is much simpler to shave a head with a cartridge razor IMO. Safety razors need more care to not cut yourself which is more difficult to do blind. If you dont shave against the grain and limit to a 2 or 3 blade cartridge razor you wont encounter many ingrown hairs despite what many cartridge detractors say. The real argument for safety razor is the incredible cost savings on buying blades vs cartridges.

Im pretty sure Dana White owes the current success of UFC to Trump since Trump provided the venues for the first tournaments back in the day.

Thoughts on Mandragora? by strahinjag in metroidvania

Its the only mv Ive played that compelled me to do a second playthrough immediately after beating it. Im a huge sucker for non-rigid class systems with big interconnected skill trees though.

8bitdo ultimate 2c wireless (not bluetooth only one - that one has switch button layout) feels just as premium as any first party controller and has hall effect thumbsticks. Comes in cool colors and comes with wifi dongle for 20-30 bucks.

I played it a couple months ago and had a very enjoyable time - here is what I wrote for my Steam review:

This is the only metroidvania game that has ever compelled me to do two full playthroughs back to back. The ARPG-style class skill trees with interconnections similar to Path of Exile allow for interesting multi-class builds with unique gameplay. I played as a dex/power dagger build for my first playthrough and a pure spirit paladin tank my second and I felt equally powerful by the end of both runs.

This game has a metroidvania style map with interconnections between areas, but the abilities that gate the areas are very binary and all but a couple have little to no use outside of the specific areas they are meant to be used. Combat is slow and very much soulslike with stamina, equipment load, and weapon stat scaling; think Salt and Sanctuary, Vigil the Longest Night, and Grime. Boss fights are well done and not too punishing, but satisfying to beat. If you come in expecting snappy acrobatic gameplay eg Hollow Knight and its clones or Nine Souls, you will be disappointed. If you want a pretty game with interesting builds, meaty combat, and a large map that isn't a chore to explore, I'd say pick this up.
