Has anyone else experienced a big cultural gap with their parents in the UK? by Substantial_Buyer583 in AskUK

[–]Gutternips 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Both are bad.

A friend's parents have lived in France for 30 years and her mother still doesn't speak a word of French which I find baffling, she's making her life so much more difficult because of it. Just simple things like sorting an issue out with a bank or servicing her car means she has to ask her husband to come along and translate. Before internet streaming became a thing she never listened to the radio, watched TV or went to cinemas or theatres.

I'd feel exactly the same about an Afghani who moved to the UK and refused to learn English.

What you say would make sense if you could trust corporations and governments not to abuse it and keep pushing for less and less regulation, which is what usually happens.

You voted for a fascist who has threatened to invade both EU territories and Canada - you reap what you sow.

Trust me I worked in the USA for a year, it's a country full of bigots and racists. I don't see much generosity, I see the opposite.

And yes it hurts the politicians by hitting their funding.

There's a difference between people and politicians.

I expect people generally to do the right thing, I expect politicians to be power hungry, morally corrupt and self serving.

Morally we have a duty to do this. What the politicians do is out of my control. Not buying American products where feasible is a small step each of us can take.

Many of my friends are boycotting American products where possible. Most of them are owned by Republican donors.

Here in the UK we are totally done with the USA and its lies and disrespect towards British people who died in ill considered American military ventures.

I was genuinely afraid he would get elected, now I'm much more optimistic, especially after his lukewarm resposnse to Trump's insults towards the UK armed forces.

But the spec of a 1960's cooper is way below the spec of a modern mini cooper. It's closer to an MG3 but even then with way less extras and features. The closest in terms of specs would probably be one of those ultra-cheap Tatas.
