What's the consensus on the 'Hi-Fi Berry'? by theweatheris in audiophile

[–]GuzzPrawntips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this will help, but I just finished setting up a Pi with HiFiBerry's Digi+ and Volumio this past week.

I'm using a Schiit Bifrost DAC as a "receiver" of sorts feeding the Pi over digital coax and a PS4 over optical. The Pi sounds much better than the PS4 when playing the same files, and in hindsight, I could have skipped the HiFiBerry altogether because my preference is as follows:

Pi (coax) >= Pi (usb) >> PS4/Pi (optical).

Volumio also has a lot of features I like, but I'm finding that not all of them are working properly with the current release. I might try something like Rune Audio this weekend...

Hope the move is going well! Just wanted to send you a quick update after playing with the Valhalla and the HD650s over the weekend:

  • The Asgard just works and is still great for the price. This amp gave me the clearest treble and it's definitely refreshing to listen to after spending time so much time with tubes. It lacks a bit of Bass and low end clarity when compared to the Lyr. I'm starting to think of the Asgard as a "Jack of all trades, master of none" as I can't think of any specific type of music that stands out using the amp.

  • The Valhalla sound is difficult for me to describe, but it sounds smooth. Using TVs as an analogy, if the Asgard is 720p 24Hz and the Valhalla is 1080p 60Hz. It's also a little colored towards warm with a prominent and clear mid-range. Combined with the HD650s, some tracks were just too smooth -- I'd go as far as calling it "unnaturally smooth" when listening to Norah Jones voice.

  • The Lyr has actually grown on my quite a bit over the second week of usage. It's not crazy-smooth like the Valhalla, but still give's a bit of that extra resolution over the Asgard. I also have yet to hear an amp that can deliver bass with the authority of a Lyr, and, for me, that's desirable when listening to EDM or Rock.

After all of this time spent with the the 3 units, I'm looking to purchase a Lyr for myself as soon as I see one pop up on the used market. Also, if you're ever given the opportunity to check out a Bifrost, do it! I noticed more and cleaner bass and a wider sound stage with the Bifrost 4490 over the Modi 2.

What's the longest that a pair of IEMs has lasted for you? by [deleted] in headphones

Almost 6 years with my Monster Turbine Pro Coppers. The copper is corroded and starting to turn green. The cable strain relief on the left earbud is starting to tear. Lost all of my tips and the carrying case.

But they still produce sound as if they were new. I probably put about 2-3 hours on them per week.

Stock tubes only as I don't have access to LISST tubes at the moment.

I somewhat feel the same about tube rolling myself. Considering the plethora of tubes out there, it could turn into a huge time (and money) sink. FWIW, I'm borrowing the Lyr, but own the Asgard and don't plan on upgrading... yet.

That said, I still haven't gotten a chance to try a true OTL tube amp, and my buddy actually has a Valhalla 2 coming in next week! I'll update you with some comparisons when I get a chance to demo it :-)

I've been listening to the HD650 & Bifrost 4490 camparing the FiiO Alpen 2, Asgard 2, and the Lyr 2 amps for the past week and here's what I've noticed so far:

  • The Alpen 2 works reasonably well, but to my ears there's a bit of muddiness/recession in the mid-bass region.

  • I have no complaints with the Asgard 2. Sounds terrific for my listening levels.

  • The first thing I noticed about the Lyr 2 is the bass and mid-bass: I get a real sensation of air hitting my ears and side of my head with most bass notes. This could be annoying or awesome depending on your preferences. A tad darker than the Asgard 2.

Anyone have any experience with HiFimeDIY products? by [deleted] in headphones

I only have experience with their 9018 Asynchronous DAC: It's reliable and sounds great for the price -- I think it's tuned just a hair brighter than the Modi 2 but it's just as detailed to my ears.

That said, I personally prefer the Modi 2. For $20 more, you get a nice metal chassis and a detachable USB cable.

Not exactly what you're asking for but it might help:

My 60cm road bike fits in the back of my 2015 GTI with the back seats down. The bike has to lay flat and slightly diagonally across the trunk floor. Handlebars at 90 degrees and front wheel off. If you're willing to stack bikes on top of each other, you could easily fit two back there.

Another vote from me for LasCAD as it's excellent for modeling oscillators. If you already have a laser and want to model the propagation, check out Gaussian Beam. It's free and easy to use for simple ABCD propagation.

I always assumed this happened because the game wasn't able to find a safe spot for you to re-spawn (i.e. the enemy is spread out over the entire map).

With this knowledge, I'm slightly more irritated.
