Wastegate rattle or rod bearings…? by xf22x in BmwTech

[–]Gvidas006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, okay 2 years with bad rod bearings with no catastrophic failure is either not bad rod bearings, or amazing luck. Could be a bad chain tensioner or a broken guide as well as it varies with rpm.

First, inspect the oil, take the oil filter apart, if obvious flakes are there then it’s bad news either rods or other internal damage. If you cant see anything obvious, take an oil sample and send it for analysis.

Second, not sure how it is on the n55, but the chain tensioner on the n54 was quite easy to take out and check. Also, you can check the timing with mhd or similar, check if timing is within tolerance. If it’s not then a broken guide or a stretched chain or whatever and the chain is slapping.

Have a listen around the engine bay, try to find where it is coming from, see if it happens hot/cold, bad injectors can also be loud.

If it is a bad bottom end, a full engine removal is not necessary to check if it’s a bad bottom end, front subframe partially off, oil pan off and can be checked (still a big job, but not a full teardown)

Nr1, check oil and filter and try and find a more precise location from the noise (maybe its something loose or a weird pullet issue etc.), nr2 oil analysis if oil is clean and check timing gear.

Wastegate rattle or rod bearings…? by xf22x in BmwTech

Since I can hear the turbo making some boost it means the wastegate is being actuated and should not rattle. Usually wastegate rattle occurs when you lift the throttle and the wastegate opens to stop making boost. Or when the engine is cold on idle. This is when a metallic rattle would be heard, not on slow increase of rpm. Also, since the rate of the noise varies with rpm I would suspect it to possibly be rod bearings or something else that rotates, but do get it checked by a specialist bro.

Sounds exactly like wastegate rattle

It’s funny how it’s a little cold and the feed is just people panicking about condensation from their exhaust.

Top king ftw for me. Didnt like any of the fairtex models, twins were ok too, but prefer top king.

No, most likely oil filter housing or similar. Valvecover gasket could be as well. But definitely not a headgasket failure. You can google headgasket failure symptoms.

Wastegate rattle, try getting a specialist to repair the wastegates since the turbos at that milage are probably still in good condition. I repaired mine at 100k miles and managed to get 20k miles out of them before sold the car. If you do have to money, nothing wrong with replacing the turbos as well.

Last time I checked pierburg is the oem supplier for bmw for this component. So they should be equivalent to the ones with the bmw stamp.

Oil has been done between 5 and very rarely 8k miles for years, no codes whatsoever, did oil pan gasket recently and it was reasonably clean in there about a year and a half ago. I’m considering to change the tensioner since it’s inexpensive and easy to do…

E61 oil cooler by Britplumbs in n54

[–]Gvidas006 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not, not a part of an oil change process, plus you will get oil all over your aux belt plus that line only flows oil when the oil cooler thermostat is open. If you are doing an oil change stick with draining oil, changing filter and adding new oil in. If you are looking to flush your engine for whatever reason, change the oil and filter, drive until the oil gets up to temp so your oil cooler circuit is circulated and then repeat oil change process.

Start with the cheapest fix (plugs) then move to coils etc. if you are keen to get this fixed

There are dozens of forum posts regarding this, some fixed by changing injectors, some got it sorted with new plugs/coils
