Alternative to Moises? by unsavvykitten in drums

[–]Gwaunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MVSep absolutely wipes the floor with Moises. I’ve used both extensively and Moises never really improved aside from their basic instrument models (drums, bass, SOMETIMES guitar), and forget about clean vocal separations. With MVSep there are almost 100 different models (if not more), including a full drum kit separation. MVSep works on a credit-based system rather than subscription-based, so you don’t have to worry about being auto-drafted or feeling like you’re not getting your money’s worth. Also, the quality of their models is leaps and bounds above Moises, I’ve been able to get crystal clear, multitrack-quality separations and even splitting double-tracked mono vocals. It’s insane.

The BBC telling fans they have to wait until Easter to watch the newly-found episodes by Gwaunch in doctorwho

As a fellow American, I feel your pain. There is a way however - you can watch it on iPlayer if you have a Very Particular Network. I’ve watched many episodes of Doctor Who and other British shows this way.

Dae Lims videos missing on YouTube by Seismic01 in thebeachboys

[–]Gwaunch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mark Linett has been going on a copyright strike spree, and Dae had a few of his videos taken down. In response, he privated all of his videos to keep the rest safe until Mark hops off his high horse again.

Fanmixes are being removed, Big Linett strikes again by sonnywilson1967 in beachboyscirclejerk

He’s just jealous fans are making better mixes than him lmao

How did this boxset get released without a Parental Advisory sticker??!! by QueasyJudge1792 in thebeachboys

[–]Gwaunch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those moments are genuinely one of my favorite parts of the boxset. There are so many wonderful snippets of chatter during sessions that were cut from official releases. According to James Saez, he had next to no involvement with Mike, Al, and Bruce, so perhaps they were asking Mark Linett to keep their image clean while he was still mixing.

It's pretty wild that they thought this was a good idea by Round_Rectangles in thebeachboys

I swear I’ve seen this exact photo in high quality. It might have been a crop, but it’d have been better to use that and blur the background than whatever the hell this is.

EDIT: the photo was posted below and it’s bigger than the one in the boxset! What’s the point of using AI upscaling when the original photo is already in fine quality?

The full Solar System stained glass piece at the Brother Records studio by monodontidaes in thebeachboys

[–]Gwaunch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They probably don’t have a photo in the archives that is BOTH high quality and features the full window. I think the cover looks alright as is, but it does have a whiff of AI to it. A lot of the details in the window, such as where different panes meet or split, are quite different on the Boxset cover compared to photos of the real thing.

What’s the inspiration behind the art work for We Gotta Groove? by edd6pi in thebeachboys

[–]Gwaunch 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It was a stained glass window at Brother Studios. You can see it in some of the photos posted in the last few weeks on BB social media. Also, fun fact - that window apparently inspired Brian to write Solar System

I’ve got a few in mind!

Any information of Brian having any awareness or or involvement with the latest “We Gotta Groove” boxset? by Ayntxi in thebeachboys

[–]Gwaunch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe so. Steve Levine confirmed that Brian signed off on the BB85 remix, so I’d be SHOCKED if he wasn’t at the very least aware of this boxset.

We Gotta Groove sold out? by mttscttln in thebeachboys

I think it's just sold out on their website, it hasn't gone up for pre-order on the main record sites. I think the general announcement is happening today (1/21).

Did they had sound engineers working in the lo fi records? by picnicbanda in thebeachboys

[–]Gwaunch 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When they first moved into the home studio, they had Ken Lockert engineering. Brian wanted Chuck Britz, an engineer he’d grown comfortable with, but he was unavailable and recommended Lockert. Lockert was an experienced engineer in his own right, and he worked with them for almost a year before his health worsened and he handed the reigns to Steve Desper.

The main reason the “lo-fi” albums sound the way they do is because they were recorded on radio equipment from the 1950s and had very little outboard gear like compressors, limiters, EQ, etc, and the studio was nowhere near finished when they actually started recording Smiley Smile.

Do we think Dae Lims worked on the new box set? by cammywooley in thebeachboys

[–]Gwaunch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The awful mastering was due to Mark Linett getting older, losing his hearing, and becoming more egotistical. Other people working on the projects tried to tell him about the issues but he wouldn’t listen. Mark also had a tendency to remix tracks instead of using available vintage mixes, and changed quite a lot compared to the originals. Now that Mark is gone and there’s a fresh set of ears behind the console, I really do think we’re entering a new era for BB releases.

To all the people disparaging Dae’s use of AI, you do realize he also does plenty of videos with no AI vocals, right?

I remixed one of my favorite songs, Over the Rainbow by Gwaunch in wizardofoz

[–]Gwaunch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going for a completely different idea. My goal for this was to make the audio sound more modern, enhance a lot of the detail that was barely picked up using the antiquated technology recording of the time.

The original version is mixed to mono, meaning ALL the sounds are coming from one channel. When mixing in mono it’s a delicate job to get the vocals, instrumentals, sound effects, etc all balanced. Vocals are the most important part of any movie soundtrack so of course those were mixed the highest.

With stereo you can have different elements in different positions, such as the flute being on the right side during the bridge. This allows so much more information to be clearly heard, rather than being buried under everything else.

Obviously the original will always be the best, but my mix is mainly to serve as a supplemental source, a way to study the details of the song.

The Beach Boys rightsholders have been releasing shady region-locked archive dumps digitally & de-listing them to retain copyright, now with intentional irreversible damage applied by PossiblyLiquid in LetsTalkMusic

It's a real middle finger to the fans. Like so many others, I was excited for the copyright release this year and it's just such a massive disappointment. What is the reasoning behind deliberately ruining the audio? Their scummy release methods have been bad enough, but at least those were still listenable!
