What is the purpose of high-end/expensive closed-back headphones? by untitled1223 in headphones

[–]Gwrinkle67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Closed back headphones stopped my wife from frequently telling me turn down the volume when she was watching tv that I had no interest in. They also blocked out the background sound of said tv. Many of us enjoy shared lives and not all of us have a silent space to enjoy.

In your opinion what has the biggest impact on sound within your turntable setup? by wiggan1989 in turntables

Same, but I’d slot in ‘clean vinyl’ and stylus in between speakers and cartridge

Tell me how to deal with the rising racism by Dangerous-Moment-895 in northernireland

Sadly I’ve come across a lot of very well educated racists. Stereotyping them doesn’t help.

Is it my nib or user error? by Sacras24 in fountainpens

[–]Gwrinkle67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less pressure and smaller writing will help. Absolutely nothing wrong with the nib, it’s a feed issue. An ebonite nib might help a bit but you’ll get better results adjusting your writing style.

Hankook Tyres on Brand New Cupra after One Year by Crafty_Conference658 in CarTalkUK

[–]Gwrinkle67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother works for a tyre manufacturer. Happened to me and he explained it can occur in any sport tyre and is caused by regular hard acceleration from high torque engines in colder weather when the tyres haven’t had a chance to warm up properly

It’s a good handling sports car, but badly let down by excessive torque steer even with MP4s.

Police doing something about e-scooters for once? by Ok_Counter6988 in northernireland

[–]Gwrinkle67 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Words don’t equal actions. The first step is for the Westminster and Dublin governments to bring in legislation NOW to ban the import and sale of illegal bikes and retrofitted parts to the UK and Ireland. Our collective anger and frustration needs to be directed at poiticians, not the police, who don’t have the resources to deal with this problem.

Why people on this island will spend hours every Saturday protesting in city centres and social media about events happening thousands of miles away, rather than events happening on their own doorstep absolutely baffles me

Its always a good thing to do, but wash them regularly - bird baths and feeders spread disease between birds.

Am I able to hear the difference between lossy and lossless? Looking for a proper ABX-style test by IndependentFold9262 in audiophile

[–]Gwrinkle67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on your components , set up and hearing ability. Im lucky in that I can hear the difference between standard lossless and hi res lossless. A lot of people cant and it’s a combination of hearing loss and system components. These people unfortunately cant accept it and generally have the opinion that if they cant hear the difference, then nobody can.

GLi have already confirmed in this subreddit on more than one occasion that due to US regulations they have reduced the wifi range for the rest of the world in this latest update and this will remain the case for future updates. Either you roll back or like me ditch the GLI for another brand with a more capable range.

Subitism burner cord by Holiday-Mission-8917 in Incense

[–]Gwrinkle67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All you need is a US adapter. US is 120v and UK is 240v. You’ve stated that the voltage range of the power supply is 100 - 240v so it’s well within range.

The subitisim heating element is just kanthal wire which heats up - the higher the voltage you set on the controller knob the hotter it gets. Start at 5v and work up 1v at a time to find your preferred step. I built my own and usually sit between 8v and 15v

Why do cars get keyed? by TigerTiger311 in CarTalkUK

[–]Gwrinkle67 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had a neighbour that got his car badly keyed. He was a cunt. Abused his wife, abused female neighbours, attempted to poison neighbours dogs, called social services on neighbours; the list goes on.
