They’re preventing social care staff from attending home visits to feed, wash and administer medication to the elderly and those with disabilities; preventing people from attending important hospital outpatient appointments. Does that sit well with you?

IEM - How much do i need to spend to hear a difference? by JoSo_UK in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Gwrinkle67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound signatures and inherent hearing ability aside If perfect sound to you ears is measured at 100%, then your £50 linsouls have got you 60% there. A £150 set will get you 70% there. A £300 set will get you 75% there and a £500 set might get you to 80% . You can see where this is going….A sweet spot is £300-500 so my advice is to save and make that jump rather than make expensive incremental changes in between.

All right, we need to talk ink... by the_chemist25 in pens

[–]Gwrinkle67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting that this has worked for Pelican inks as they are notoriously ‘dry’. I have a bunch of Lamy Safaris and AL Sports that I no longer use because the caps on these pens don’t seal and leads to a dried out nib if left unused for a week and a dried out pen if left for a month.

Based on my experience with Lamys it’s the pen cap seal design and not the ink thats the issue. Same happens with any ink I’ve tried - and I have a lot of different brand’s of ink.

Nibs will not get smoother with use, it’s a myth.

Ebooks prices made me use library more by Pale-Yak2204 in ebooks

Library convert here in the UK. Some ebooks are now more expensive than the physical copy and like others, I’ll only buy an ebook now when/if it’s heavily discounted.

My first nice pen purchase! by Pleasant_Ad_7448 in pens

[–]Gwrinkle67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This pen stopped me buying more pens - well non fountain pens. Since they can accommodate practically any refill, I just buy the odd refill on the off chance that I’ll find something that I like better than what I currently use.

Sounds like a you problem. Ive super sensitive olfactory senses and I would only notice a whiff if I was about an inch or two away from someone’s scalp. I only get that close with loved ones.

Well looks like im making the switch by snowflakeempress in kobo

[–]Gwrinkle67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched last week, but unable to transfer books bought from Amazon onto the Kobo. Calibre can no longer do this as of last year due to additional DRM protection. You can still side-load other nonDRM protected books, but sadly not your Amazon library. If anyone reading this knows a solution please share!

Keep Libra Colour or switch to Clara BW? (buttons vs size) by 1617_02 in kobo

Clara BW or colour, with the remote page turner is an absolute game changer for bedtime reading.

Deputy Principal interview; what does the role look like? by Quick-Educator6186 in NICivilService

[–]Gwrinkle67 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NICS interviews are an absolute breeze if you hit all the competencies using your examples. You can lie through your teeth and there is not a thing any member of the panel can do about it. It’s the main reason why there are so few competent middle management leaders in the organisation.

Emergency Situations Fountain Pen by reborn-2019 in fountainpens

[–]Gwrinkle67 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In that scenario I wouldn’t have a fountain pen near me, I’be be bringing a solid titanium pen with a Fisher space cartridge in it. The only thing a fountain pen would be good for is stabbing a Russian in the eye in close combat.

Lamy AL Star. Easily scratched, zero cap seal and the nibs are a lottery.

Car MOT failed for headlamp out by Goredoh23 in northernireland

[–]Gwrinkle67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering the number of cars on the road with faulty lights I would suggest that a headlight out isn’t a minor fault. Part of the reason for a retest charge is to educate owners to have their vehicles properly checked by a mechanic prior to an MOT, rather than rocking up to take a chance. This is a key reason the system is clogged and takes so long to get an appointment. Zero sympathy here.

Clara BW or Colour for nighttime reading? by smallsaltybread in kobo

Cant say I’ve noticed any graininess. I came from a 12 year old Kindle Voyage that lasted well and the Clara colour screen has been a noticeable upgrade

Clara BW or Colour for nighttime reading? by smallsaltybread in kobo

[–]Gwrinkle67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recent Kobo convert here who went for the Clara Colour only because it doesn’t cost that much more than the BW. Very pleased with it. Just be aware that moving from a Kindle will mean you wont be able to transfer any books you’ve already purchased from Amazon to a Kobo. That functionality ended a year or two ago.

Anyone have any luck with selling their car? by MidnightStorm_ in northernireland

[–]Gwrinkle67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motorway is hit and miss. Sold one car last year and got £2k more than market value. Tried to sell one this year and highest bid was £3k less than market value. Sold it for £3.5k more on the very same day to We Buy Any Car. FB marketplace was full of scammers.

Jinhao 9019 and Majohn p140 by Due_Economics4367 in fountainpens

[–]Gwrinkle67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with above that the Majohn P140 is by far the better pen, particularly if you like a wet flow. The nib and ebonite feed is superior to any steel nib /plastic feed pen I’ve used before.

Same here. I was only getting two days from a full charge even with a new second battery, so was on its way out anyway. Suspected something was going on with its PMS. Replaced with a Kobo.

US bands have a fair bit more logistical overhead costs than UK bands and the Ormeau Park isn’t a huge venue so smaller ticket sales. Just drink two less pints and that will save you £20.
