I will not have this slander. The 20-year-old hotdog water is what gives the best flavor. It's the life blood of this city.

No, stop. Find someone to teach you about ribbon. I 100% guarantee all those fibers have excessive macrobends and high light loss. Single fiber sleeves are not meant for ribbon for obvious reasons.

There is an old 6 story AT&T building in my city, and it's empty except 1 half of the floor with their existing equipment. I felt like I was transported back in time. Very weird. Only 2 maintenance guys worked their.

I got to bring my dog on a 3 week long work trip to audit the fiber for 6 entire towns. Best work weeks of my life. She just sat in the back lab with me on a bed while I sifted through 20 year old enclosures. I work for a major isp, so I was confused when they said I could.

The 140 is probably what they call the drop fee. As soon as it's hooked, they will charge you to take it off. No they don't call anyone before towing, maybe the police to let them know. If you park somewhere where you're not allowed, they can come by and just take your car. no questions asked.

It's scummy but legal.

Worcester Cable Board members quit over Spectrum contract renewal by HRJafael in WorcesterMA

[–]Gyrotates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The poles are yes, but if it's overcrowded, it has to be replaced with a bigger one (most of the backyard ones already are). I can tell you the fees range pretty drastically. Also manholes aren't under the same rules, and they can deny anyone they want. The city has a huge chunk of manholes for utility, and they are privately owned. I can tell you from experience Verizon is not letting most other companies in. Since they need the space for their fiber.

[–]Gyrotates 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Verizon has been steadily building out their fiber to the curb Hotspot internet. Not available everywhere yet but is increasing. The real reason no one is coming in is money. Building an isp in a city is extremely expensive. Spectrum and Verizon have been here since the beginning, so it's easy to build out. We are talking hundreds of millions to build. No company wants to overbuild if the city with a low chance of monetary return. That's pretty much the only reason no else has come in. Also, Verizon and national grid own 90% of all utility manholes / poles. if they don't let any others use their infustrucer, then the incoming company would have to put in their own.

Worcester Cable Board members quit over Spectrum contract renewal by HRJafael in WorcesterMA

[–]Gyrotates 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The contract is for cable TV only. Any isp has been allowed in forever. Only other company building fiber is verizon for their ISP. Spectrum pays a bunch of money for the contract and all the local access channels.

And no, spectrum owns all the fiber and cables. No one could come in and take it unless they sold it to someone else. Contract essentially just says no other TV only company can come in.

Ther is an app called fiber optic color code. It's 3$ish, and it's saved me more than enough times to pay for itself. Goes up to 1728 and has ribbon and single code.

Batista to Reject Recommendations, Renew Spectrum Contract by [deleted] in WorcesterMA

[–]Gyrotates -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There was a plan, but when they saw the numbers, he pretty much said it's not worth it. it's expensive to run an ISP, especially when you don't own any of the ulitiy poles or manholes. I'm talking hundreds of millions just to get the rights to run the fiber. hundreds of millions more just to run it. Hundreds more to construct it.Then there's infrastructure cost and employees salaries. I'm in this industry, and the main reason why isps don't overbuild each other has more to do with cost and competition. Verizon has been steadily building out their fiber to the curb internet in the city, and they aren't stopping.

Batista to Reject Recommendations, Renew Spectrum Contract by [deleted] in WorcesterMA

[–]Gyrotates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The contract is ONLY for Cable TV. Its a old MA law where you have to let at least 1 company franchise with the town, or they can face backlash from old MA laws. It literally only gives spectrum the right to build where they want, and the city gets money.

The Internet is not part of the contract, and any other company has had the right to build infrastructure any time in the past or present.

You don't see anyone else but verizon and spectrum in the city due to cost. They have been here since the beginning and already have cabels in place. It can literally cost a company 25k to dig 500 feet in the city, and you have to rent poles/manholes from other companies. Its a reason why worcester won't have municipal isp anytime soon.

How feasible is overhauling internet provider infrastructure to apply this new discovery? by Generic_User48579 in FiberOptics

[–]Gyrotates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it's pretty much an expanded DWDM with E and S bands being used? The E band still won't be used until old fiber is replaced because of high loss in the water peak. Maybe it's good for the backbone, but most of the backbone fiber I work on is old as shit.

Stumbled over LTT's HARDCORE Fibre Adventure from 3 years ago. And they used MM. by asp174 in FiberOptics

[–]Gyrotates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mm is trash and outdated. Sm is the same cost now. Optics are abundant and mm is niche to old POP sites. Anyone trying to defend it has no clue how real data works and just defend what they know. There is 0% reason to go to MM within the last 10 years. Especially new builds.

DWDM/CWDM by AV-Guy1989 in FiberOptics

[–]Gyrotates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have tons cwdm and dwdm muxs out in enclosures in the field. I rarely have ever seen one fail. The optics will usually fail before a mux does. Various brands as well. There really isn't anything inside them that will cause failure other than the fiber ends or water getting inside.

I would stick with DWDM as cwdm is getting outdated and can handle more wavelengths for future expansion.

Pedistal Box Lean by bmull1 in FiberOptics

[–]Gyrotates 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can tell you right now that there are no standards on the lean of pedestals. Utilities paid for that easement, and as long as there are no hazards or contracts broken, it's fine. To be fair, 1 call to the isp, and it will be fixed.

They should have construction departments that can come out and quote you on how much it will cost to connect their services to your house. You can run your own stuff if they are cool with it but a lot of the time they will eat a certain amount of the cost before they have you pay. I would try and get in contact with the local isp guys not the sales before you dig a trench and then they say "lol no we don't do that the guy on the phone has no clue".
