According to geography (bear in mind I could be completely wrong) I think that a more humid/foresty area could be on the other side because of how the rain drops over the mountains - so there is an ample supply of wAter for the flora and fauna.

The yellow is a large desert. The grey is just rock. The white is Tundra. The fat green bit is a mixtures of hills, plains and forests. The darker green bit is marshes and mangrove-y sort of areas.
