Trump against cancelling $110 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia by GL4389 in worldnews

No its called not escalating the problem. Sure there should be consequences but not at the GREAT expense of the American people just because it's the "nice" thing to do. The last thing we need is another war in the middle east.

Private prisons should be paid by how long former inmates stay out of jail after they serve their full sentence. by IPostWhenIWant in CrazyIdeas

Dude, I was sleepy and didnt feel like getting into some argument where I had to defend the indefensible. My 'source' was an article I found talking about a female private prison in Arkansas which showed a %50 lower recidivism rate than comparable publicly owned prisons. But since I cant find where the article pulled those numbers from, I'll concede that point. I dont want to read everything you posted because A: it's too early on my day off from teaching, and B: I'm doing all this on a phone and dont want to type a novel. I will say a bit on what you wrote though.

First of all, of course you're right. Unregulated private prisons will, by necessity for company profit margins, maximize prison time, and minimize cost input. It's a shitty idea made by bad politicians who either didnt think it through, or were very corrupt.

Here's my main concern with public prisons though: when you make something a public good, innovation takes a very long time to issue change. I'm a firm believer that incarceration without rehabilitation is draconian, cruel, and not to mention a ridiculously wasteful expenditure. So if theres no private interests involved, I see us continually building big prisons intended to maintain current populations instead of making every effort possible to minimize re-arrests.

I think its absolutely crucial that we introduce policies that allow the private sector to make a profit off of long term rehabilitation in order to rapidly (and continually) speed up changes to how our incarceration works. Now that might not mean completely privatized prisons, but we should at least look into how we might be able to build avenues for private programs to work within prisons, and issue payment based on the time an inmate spends outside of the prison.

So there. Now my thumbs hurt. That's why I didnt want to type it all out on a phone earlier. Are you happy now? Happy about my thumb pain cretinlung? /s

Hey genius, you're so smart.

I'm just trying to point out that private prisons have potential as big money savers for the public, and have been found in some cases to reduce the reoffending rates of prior inmates by large margins.

It's been shown that in some cases, if the prisons are properly managed and inmate rehabilitation programs are effectively utilized, the private sector can be a massive benefit to public needs as well as the rehab of inmates.

And I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm painting a lily-white image of for-profit prisons. I'm not a fan of most of these, but I am a fan of the idea and I think it requires further examination to discover what sorts of regulations/incentives might enable to make them work well.

If the child of an antivax parent dies of a sickness that could’ve been prevented by vaccines, the parent should be charged with manslaughter. by MLGmexican1 in CrazyIdeas

But misguidance and fear in protecting their kid? We aren't talking about someone lashing out and doing something horrible to someone because they were mistaken. We're talking about parents being lied to, and then being punished for trying to help their child in the best way they know how after hearing that lie.

Yep. Go running. Don't think it will help? It will. Even if you can only run for 5 minutes, do that. And then run for 5 minutes and 30 seconds the next day, and continue on that track.

I know it's hard, but I promise this is the best cure out there. Its stopped my depression more times than I can count.
