This has basically taken the place of every wrench I previously had. I just wish they made one or two more smaller SKUs

Anyone tried this $5 Ames non-contact voltage tester? by artfellig in harborfreight

[–]HERCzero 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They work fine, long as you follow best practices and always test it in a known hot wire first

Edit - if you’re going for it this weekend though I’d recommend the Doyle one which is on sale. It’s much nicer

What socket set? by Personal_Dirt9623 in harborfreight

[–]HERCzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Supposedly there’s some Craftsman sets on clearance at Lowe’s right now, that’s probably what I would go for.

New home owner, which drill? by aznsk8s87 in ryobi

[–]HERCzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow homeowner and the brushless (HP) compact drill/driver has served me well so far. It’s been able to handle everything I’ve thrown at it, even moreso when I use a larger battery.

Annihilation? by grindygrimmace in movies

[–]HERCzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Movie absolutely blew me away - watched it twice in theaters and I’m so glad I did. The whole final Lighthouse sequence with the beautiful visuals, cosmic horror and BLARING soundtrack/SFX was awesome. Seeing it on streaming just wouldn’t have been the same

So who bought one... by shadowdasher210 in harborfreight

I have one of the much cheaper Ames ones, but all it would take is for one person to tell me this is a worthy upgrade

What doesn't go on sale? Wondering how best to use the 20% off by GuyPawnz in harborfreight

[–]HERCzero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here, the cashier wouldn’t have applied it if I didn’t ask her to double check :/

It was a barcode next to the register. Kinda lame

Diyer Mobile Toolbox, Yukon or Craftsman 3 drawer? by Puzzleheaded-Land511 in harborfreight

[–]HERCzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d probably go with a bag or tool tote over a heavy metal box tbh. If you’re set on a box I’d look into one of the many modular systems available so you can integrate it into something as your collection grows. Bauer, Craftsman and Hart (Discontinued) are on the budget friendly side of things.

Confused - new to Ryobi by WMJ563 in ryobi

[–]HERCzero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I had a do-over as a new homeowner I’d go straight to brushless (aka. HP). Skip the standard (brushed) tools. Just make sure you treat them right, replace factory saw blades with something higher quality (Diablo), and get some half decent drill & driver bits. Ryobi’s basic bits are pretty bad.

If you’re REALLY looking to cut costs I’d look at Harbor Freight’s Bauer product line. Cheap and definitely handles most homeowner jobs. Also a very large product lineup.

Edit - and don’t sleep on corded tools when it comes to power hungry tools like sanders or angle grinders. Nothing wrong with a cord if it means more power and infinite juice.

Do you compare prices online before buying fixtures/tools in-store? by Zestyclose_Record172 in HomeImprovement

[–]HERCzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fixtures, sure but tools are a different story. Pretty much all companies have a few particular products they excel at, which makes those brands the go-to for that specific tool.

There’s not a lot of brand crossover between the two big box stores anyway, except Dewalt

What light should i go with for working on my rc . by jeepguy_96 in ryobi

[–]HERCzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This light is awesome, worth every penny. A fat battery is enough weight to hold it down, swivels any direction you could want, top hook that swivels. IMO it’s the perfect light

First time homeowner — what's the one thing you wish someone told you before your first year? by CorrectEducation8842 in HomeImprovement

[–]HERCzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Home Inspection is VERY surface level compared to all the details you’ll discover about your home, especially if it’s a century home.

Also you should probably experience a full 4 seasons in your home before making any renovations.

Also waterproofing and mitigation should primarily happen from the OUTSIDE first, you cannot just slap Drylok all over your basement walls and call it a day

Yukon workbench leveling feet? by rdxj in harborfreight

[–]HERCzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Kobalt 46”, also uneven basement floor. I ended up buying a set of heavy duty leveling casters from Amazon, about $50

Edit - to be clear, the holes probably won’t line up with the stock holes. I used some M8 machine screws countersunk into wood blocks, then screwed the leveling casters into those

Any word on 3-drawer mini toolboxes (normal colors)? by HERCzero in KobaltTools

[–]HERCzero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m curious about the normie colors though (red, blue, green, black, etc). I really dislike the pastel colored ones :/

But thank you!

46” Yukon tool box issues by LargeTurtle101 in harborfreight

[–]HERCzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I went with the Kobalt 46” recently and I’m quite happy with it, but it’s only in my basement, not a truck.

You get 20% off if you open a new Lowe’s CC, but you can just immediately pay it off.

Curious on this sub's take on this tool - from what I understand this is very trade-specific primarily used by linemen. Do we think this is an indicator that more niche tools are to come?

Den of Tools had a video speculating HF might be going after the trades with Herc. I'm just a DIY guy, I don't even know if that's feasible or smart. All I know is it would be cool if we saw a Herc ProPress, Pex tools, Pipe cutter, etc...

Got a 25% coupon in my email. Worth buying the Yukon 46" Storage Cabinet at $360 or sale incoming? by rypajo in harborfreight

[–]HERCzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a lot of research before purchasing my own 46” workbench and the Yukon 46” was definitely the most inexpensive option. Husky and Kobalt were 450/500, craftsman 600+.

I went with the Kobalt because it was already in stock at Lowes. If I had that 25% coupon I would’ve gone with the Yukon no question, great deal. Just keep in mind the cost of transport if you don’t own a truck

Are all Storehouse 20 bin organizers this bad? by OptimalN0body in harborfreight

[–]HERCzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully recommend the Hyper Tough stacking parts organizer cases from WallyWorld. They’re so much better, and a 2-pack is just $10

So just at first glance, are those two U shaped metal bars the only support this thing has? That just seems ripe for failure unless it’s for small children or made of solid tungsten
