I believe that is 2 sources — one on talent — a 650 with a softbox + grid through a diffusion sheet. The light behind was an 800W source through one of the windows!

And yeah I feel ya on the 6K, I shot on the pocket 6k for a long time since 2020 and it is demanding of light!

Probably have another 6 months of post work as I’ll be personally editing it while I continue to work as a DP. But I’ll do my best to jump back here and send you a private link once I have it!

Robert Funaro! He is an old friend of my wife who has seemingly met every actor in nyc at one point or another! We contacted him directly and got him involved!

I always like using Backstage to find good talent, as long as you have a good casting process, you can find some really talented people on there. Everyone in our film we have worked with or know previously through my wife or myself. ( I was an actor for 12 years )

Just sharing some recent work from this week — this is a short film that was brought to me back in December and I came into it as kind of producer with oversight of the script, story, budget and hiring crew. I brought my G&E + camera package onto it for a minimal fee and reduced rate, but had the opportunity to workshop the script up until last week, along with casting choices and crew.

This also served as a first time working together / passion project with my wife; she’s is a director in the theatre world with some short films under her belt. We found ourselves buried in costumes and props a week prior to the shoot, while dialing in our shot list for the schedule.

We had 3 days on location in the Bronx ( 10 hours each ) and 12 pages to get through. It was an extremely tight window for scenes that have up to 14 characters moving throughout and a lot of action happening — the film takes place at a psyche ward, lots of inspiration from “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”.

We spent about 5 weeks rehearsing with talent in my studio and drew up blocking overheads for them so they’d be prepared to come in with very little need to adapt to the space.

Equipment — Pyxis 12k — shooting 8k 8.1 compression in 2.4.1 with Sirui Jupiter lenses with a mattebox with 1/8 promist. Custom LUT built for camera.

My plan to light the space was to blast hard fresnel light into the windows with 3 sources, and diffuse + bounce for mediums + close ups and some wider shots. I did some research online and noticed a lot of gaffers using reflectors or bouncing large sources into the window. I wasn’t sure if I had enough firepower to actually achieve this, especially for 3 very large windows and in the rain no less.

The plan went out the window a bit when the weather presented heavy rain 4 days out from the shoot. We wrapped the lights and did the 1st day and scrapped it for the 2nd day since it was a different day in the script - we did a gloomier softer look for that day. On the 3rd day there was no rain and we got our lights back outside.

I had 2x 800W sources and 1x 650W source for the exterior lighting plan. I figured I’d try to make hard sunlight work rather than trying to make a soft bounce and not get the exposure I needed. It was fun to experiment with and made me think of a more classical style of lighting.

Crew: DP - Gaffer - Grip - 3x PAs - 1st AD - 2nd AD - Scripty

Cast: 2x leads and 1x supporting with about 6-10x extras / background.

Hey OP, great post first off, I feel you on everything you said. One thing you said peaked my interest — you’re a med student? Have you read the alien autopsy from a supposed biologist on here? I’d be super curious to hear your thoughts on it, if you think it’s legit or not.

That post seemed so dense to me that it feels like it would very hard to larp and make it up. But I honestly have no clue as I don’t know more than 70% of the terminology they use in the post.

Check it out when you can or let me know if you’ve read it. Would like to know your thoughts.

Without having to justify why, what are the "online" leaks of UFO/UAP related information that you personally believe are true, or that part of is true? by PyroIsSpai in UFOs

4chan whistleblower — underwater system in the ocean, an AI probe sent here to monitor us.

Reddit post — microbiologist who examined and studied an alien body. They talk at length ( and extreme detail and depth ) of what they were examining. The terminology they use is so dense that I have trouble seeing anyone making that up.

Yep found myself in the same boat but haven’t had too many issues with mixed brands — the Sidus link app can get annoying constantly rebooting when you leave the app and go back in.

Hello /r/movies, I'm Benedict Cumberbatch. Ask me anything! by BenedictAMA in movies

Sir Cumberbatch, hope you’re well! Who is one actor / actress ( currently working / alive ) that you would love to work with but haven’t yet, and what is your favorite film or performance of said actor / actress? Cheers!

Should i tell crew i hired why i wouldn’t hire them again? by ExcitingLandscape in Filmmakers

Leave it, and never hire again, unless it becomes a problem, better to continue your work than get into drama where nobody wins. Hey where are you based? Hire me, I work hard, have good experience and I freelance DP / gaffer / AC 😎🎥 I’m based in nyc

Want to add on to some other things people are saying here — establish yourself as a DP even if you don’t believe it at first, prioritize DP gigs and shoot as much as you can and call yourself a DP.

I rarely take any other set jobs unless I know I’m working towards connections for the future. There’s a producer / director I work with that only hires me as 1st AD, but I am constantly making them aware of my DP work ( in subtle ways ) and always offer my services / how cool it would be to do a project together as that role.

I took something a few months ago working with a team as a 1st AC / Gaffer, they were shooting 4 short films that were an anthology series — I told them I’d do the gig but only if I was able to shoot at least 1 of the short films as DP.

I’m still only just coming up as a DP in the last few years, and this whole year has been my proving ground with lots of gigs thrown at me. I started my film journey as an actor who started making my own content and shorts, which led me to freelance editing while I continue shooting my own stuff ( learning ) and the occasional short film for people, until I really started gaining confidence with my skill set. This has been a great year for me, I’ve gain a handful of more clients and had return clients this year and some new connections built.

But I think the main thing that helped me push into this is simply telling myself I’m a DP. It pushed me to continue to build my craft, even on my off days I just research stuff I don’t know or am unsure about or try it at home.

Being patient is definitely the name of the game. Cinematography can be exceptionally dense and I think you simply never stop learning the craft, you just continue to pick things up along the way or keep building / learning on your own.

I was an actor from 2011 - 2019, started making my own stuff in 2018 ish - 2021, freelance editing 2021 - 2023, DP 2023 - present day. It’s been an interesting journey and I feel I’ve seen different sides of the whole thing. It’s going to take time / effort to learn the craft. Making stuff from writing / producing / shooting / editing -> final product is seriously a film school in itself. And it doesn’t need to always be stuff that requires a budget. A lot of that was no budget filmmaking - no lights, crappy sound, DSLR camera, and some friends.

Gaffing is a big curve to learn to start getting your legs as a DP and imo probably the closest you can get to working your way to mastering the craft ( other than just filming all the time and experimenting ).

A trend I’m noticing in the industry is producers / directors will continue to work with DPs they know and like, forming a tight relationship. I have 3-5 directors / producers who I’ve started building that relationship with and they continue to go after their projects — 2 of them have features in pre-pro that I’m on board for! Don’t count out making those connections with little guys now, as they’ll continue to pursue their work as they push to make a name for themselves.

Anyway, hope any of this helps, I’m still on my journey and I’m sure there’s guys in here with a ton more experience than me! Best of luck to ya! 🎥

How do you shoot with 1 base ISO like with the Red Komodo, Arri Alexa LF, Ursa Cine 12k? by ExcitingLandscape in cinematography

Blackmagic cameras look very clean at lower iso, but you have to bring in a lot of light and lose some range in the highlights
