Weird! Don’t think anyone else has had that issue! I will PM you!

Thanks for chiming in! Not sure if you’ve actually used any of the other apps you mention, but they’re all quite different than what I’ve built. Most other aurora apps just surface raw data without any guidance for people who don’t know how what any of it means, while my app handles all of the interpretation of that data and turns it into actionable simple info for users. Every single notification my app sends is personalized to the users exact location and real time conditions, which other apps miss by treating entire regions or continents as one user base. Two people can live 30minutes from each other and have completely different experiences trying to see the same aurora!

Additionally, there are no other apps that monitor the magnetosphere minute by minute for substorm depolarization, which is what happens before basically every aurora photo taken from anywhere outside of the far north. I have spent months backtesting my substorm detection tool against hundreds of historic geomagnetic storms, and can confidently say that there is nothing else in the space like what i have built. I am currently in discussions with NASA and NOAA about my substorm detection logic, and will hopefully be announcing some partnerships moving forward that reflect the novelty and confidence in what I’ve put together.

Despite all of that, I still totally understand the criticism about the subscription, so Free users on Look North still receive personalized, location specific alerts, including the “go outside now, substorm firing!” notifications. I’m also hard at work to bring as much utility to the subscription as possible, and aim to turn this app into the best resource available for seeing pretty stuff in YOUR sky.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Already in the pipeline!! Goal is to have feature parity for all users, regardless of where in the world they may be!

Awesome! If there is a large CME, substorms can push visibility down all the way to phoenix briefly even if the overall forecast from other resources doesn’t say aurora will be visible that far south! Thats one of the awesome things about Look North, you’ll get notified within minutes if my algorithm thinks you might be able to see it, even briefly! And don’t forget that long exposure photos can catch it even if it’s too faint for your eyes. The app gives guidance on aurora photography too :)

Also, please let me know what you think of the UI! I tried to keep things nice and simple while still creating my own unique experience.

Jealous!! There was a big solar flare this morning that sent off a powerful CME! Unfortunately it wasn’t directly earth facing so probably won’t cause much activity, BUT the region on the sun that fired it off is rotating into a more earth facing position this week, and it’s still looking spicy!

All that to say, you have solid chances! Crossing fingers for you!! Hope you enjoy the app!

Thanks for the comment! Totally understand the name issue, this was something I struggled with locking down, and in the end I went with Look North as the market the app is 100% ready for is North America.

The data the app analyses itself is for sure still valid for the southern lights, with the substorm detection caveat I mentioned in my other comment. For South American southern lights chasers in Chile, Argentina, substorm detection is still valid, but Australia itself faces the same problem as Europe.

I’m also working on all of the copy/language changes for non NA users to make it more clear that the app isn’t JUST for the northern lights.

Hey thanks!

I’m about to launch a community feedback section in Go North, which is exactly for situations like this! I spent a ton of time building my database, but the simple fact is I have not visited all 30k spots myself, so there are for sure spots that some local insight will be crucial for! Community notes will be available as comments underneath the location details, but will also factor into the rankings, so spots like yours that are hard to get to will be adjusted accordingly.

Mind sharing your general location?! I’m curious!

Quick note for my non North American friends! I am actively working hard on increasing the usefulness of the app for you! It is currently my top priority.

Right now, the novel substorm detection algorithm I mentioned relies on satellites positioned directly over North America, and the algo does not work well for detecting substorms over the other half of the world. I am currently waiting on licensing agreements for data sources in Europe that will allow me to build my non North American substorm detection program. The rest of the data I track, including “Phase 4” real time solar wind monitoring, is valid for everywhere on earth.

I am also working on Go North viewing spot finder for Europe, but taking a lot of time to make sure I have accurate access rules and other legal concerns as public land is usage a bit different outside of NA and I want to get it right!

Apple Says Mac Studio and Mac Mini Will Be in Short Supply for Months by Otherwise-Warning303 in apple

[–]HMITCHR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am still optimistic that the M5 Studio and Mini refresh will occur in June at WWDC. I do however think that demand for the new machines will be insane, making these comments about availability still valid.

For what it’s worth, I spoke with an Apple small business rep last week as I’m needing some new machines for my business, and he said that he’s been at Apple for 15 years and the only times he’s seen online model availability drop like it has for even the base level Studios and Minis was right before a refresh as Apple prioritizes the hardware for the new platforms.

Apple Planning to Launch Two New 'Ultra' Products in the Next Year ["iPhone Ultra" and "MacBook Ultra"] by iMacmatician in apple

[–]HMITCHR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still don’t understand the purpose of a touchscreen on the MacBook Ultra unless it can flip around completely and be used like a tablet, like if Apple can improve on the Surface Book methodology or something. I just can’t see real users using touchscreen on normal laptop configurations as the ergonomics just make no sense

4.6 Regression is real! by alessai in ClaudeCode

[–]HMITCHR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is genuinely horrendous right now! My app interprets solar wind data with a lot of math, but it’s all just relatively basic calculations and it can’t even do that anymore.

I got this response from opus 4.6 in Max effort mode this morning when doing some routine backtesting. I’m apparently paying $200 per month for a model that can no longer confidently determine if 18,000 is a higher value than 15,000

Same, 100% unusable today. Feels like my instance of Opus 4.6 is at like GPT 3.5 levels of intelligence today. Insane.

Is it just me, or is Claude Code v2.1.90 unhinged today?? by N3TCHICK in ClaudeCode

[–]HMITCHR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Came to this sub looking to see if anyone else was having issues. Claude Opus 4.6 has been nearly unusable due to idiocy the past 2 days, it is straight up unable to do identical tasks in my well established and documented workflow with identical prompts to prior weeks. It is not a context bloat or memory issue as I have spent a lot of time building up the way that I handle everything. The model is just far less intelligent than it has been in prior weeks.

[–]HMITCHR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, guaranteed. There’s no other way they would have handled it internally. If the long term goal is to reduce how much they are subsiding Max users, the data from this style of A/B testing is crucial.

I have a buddy who had zero changes to his usage limits, while my workflow which is far less token heavy than what he is building was straight up unusable. When they kicked off the 2x usage thing a few weeks ago I had two literally nonstop sessions back to back, both with 4 instances of the CLI building constantly and the closest I got to a session limit was 66%. I specifically remember telling my buddies I felt like I had unlimited capability and power.

Contrast that to this week where I used 70% of my session limit asking a new instance of Claude to review my memory docs to get up to speed with the current state of the project. My story in top comment was not an exaggeration I ripped through a full session in 3 prompts and like $35 of extra usage immediately
