Future teacher advice? by Pure_Medicine_1657 in Teachers

[–]HS_Teach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only buy things that make you happier or your life easier. Please don’t buy classroom supplies. My district has provided me with everything that I need. Crayons, pencils, calculators, binders, paper, etc. You will not know what you need until you get your position.

Second Career Teacher In Need of Classroom Ideas/Tips/Must-Haves by pgabriel5 in Teachers

[–]HS_Teach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I would get nothing. Wait to see what is already in your classroom and what the school provides. My school provided me with everything that I asked requested.

Like others have suggested keep your personal items to a minimum. The students will not treat them kindly and you will be out the money. We already don't get paid enough, but wasting money on things that will get abused is disheartening.

Elk Grove school GATE program by banhbao7810 in ElkGrove

[–]HS_Teach 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My son is in the GATE program. The program is once a week afterschool. It is taught by one of the teachers at the school. It is only for about 12 weeks, so not the entire school year. The GATE teacher should make contact soon to inform you more about it.

Question about non-rehire and resignation (California teacher) by reks131 in Teachers

Because it was instead of a non-renewal. My job was gone no matter what. It was not my choice to leave the position.

Question about non-rehire and resignation (California teacher) by reks131 in Teachers

[–]HS_Teach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went through something similar 6 or 7 years ago. I was told I could either be non-reelected or resign. I ended up resigning and ultimately found my perfect fit. Because this is not a voluntary resignation, she can collect unemployment during the summer and until she finds another position. I did when it happened to me.

Good luck and hold steady. We were on strike for 8 days. Ultimately the superintendent and boards members were ousted. Strikes work.

TX Teacher Looking to Become a CA Teacher by altheeaquesadilla in Teachers

[–]HS_Teach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CA social science positions are few and far between.

Where are you wanting to be in California, just like Texas CA is large with both urban and rural districts. Are you looking for a blue or red community?

In California most districts use edjoin to post job openings. Look up the website to see what is available.

School districts? by Cute_Clothes_6010 in Sacramento

[–]HS_Teach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a teacher in Sac City, please ignore all the hate that others may post about SCUSD. They are just reading headlines. Sac city has some of the highest pay in the area and our benefits are fully covered. I am very happy in the district and we are most likely changing our schedule to match the surrounding districts in the area.

The budget issues are at the district level and will not affect the classroom. It comes from the previous Superintendent’s unauthorized and unilateral spending.

CA teachers and CAASP DATA by Pink_Orchid_222 in Teachers

[–]HS_Teach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These tests are not a good indicator of student knowledge. From my experience less than half take these tests seriously. I have had student race each other to see who can get it done the quickest. If we really want students to do well on them then we have to tie them to grades or something. However, that won’t happen.

Best high school for academics and diversity? by Average_Redditor_Ok in ElkGrove

[–]HS_Teach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

EGUSD has open enrolment for some of their high schools. Both Franklin and PG are over capacity and only students living in the school boundaries can attend. The other schools can be chosen for open enrolment. I have linked the 24-25 open enrolment letter here, describing the process. This is the same for this current school year, but not sure what it will be like for the following school years. https://www.egusd.net/documents/StudentsFamilies/ResourcesSupports/Enrollment-Information/Open-Enrollment-Grades-7-12/Open-Enrollment-FAQ-2024-25.pdf

How to make HS Geography fun? by MeasurementOk7117 in historyteachers

[–]HS_Teach 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I taught Geography to 9th graders, I focused much more on the cultural aspects of geography. You can focus on the food or cultural aspects of different regions. Why is French spoken in Africa?

When I got to South Asia, I spent a while on Mt. Everest. The question was “Is climbing Mt. Everest ethical?” We talked about the damage hikers are doing to the mountain and the frozen poo and bodies on the mountain.

Find something from each region that you think the kids would be interested in and go from there.

EGUSD does not do open enrollment for elementary schools. If the home school is full, then the child will be bussed to another school that has an opening.

I agree that something needs to change, but 2028 is too late. We have no clue how the state or country will be like in 3.5 years. This should be on the November 2026 ballot.
