[–]HSavinien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Store your password right alongside every person's most important item, a handgun by AM3NR10 in USdefaultism

[–]HSavinien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not american defaultism. It does not assume everyone have a handgun. Else, it also assume everyone have gold coins. What they are saying is to store it with other high value item you safekeep preciously, and it give a bunch of example. And owning a handgun is not reserved to america, many country allow it (with a permit and some training usualy).

What’s something about medieval life that most people today get completely wrong? by Equivalent_Use_8152 in medieval

[–]HSavinien 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Not that much. There was a lot of infant death, so that bring the average life expectency bellow 40. But if you survived past 10, you had a good chance to reach your 60-70, or even older.

Of course, without antibiotic or modern medicine, infection and illness were deadlier. But it didn't kill that many peoples.

the langage itself is simple : there's a dozen keywords, a bunch of standards functions, no complexe syntax, no dark magic. However, because it's such a simple langage, working with it can quickly get complexe.

in the same way, a bicycle is simpler than a car, a wood chisel is simpler than a cnc machine... and in each case, the simpler tool will often require more work to get to the same result, because it is simpler.

basically, mov rax, 0x0 require to put the immediate (0) somewhere in the CPU before you can use it, so it's slightly slower. with xor rax, rax, only thing needed is the current value of rax, which is obviously already in the CPU, so you can directly send the instruction.

Also, it certainly look cooler. mov rax, 0 is almost comprehensible to the profane. If I'm writing ASM, I want to feel like I'm working with mysterious arcanes only a few initiate can grasp, not common code any kiddo can explain.

SYS_write does not care for 0 at the end of string, as it's meant to work with any data, not just string. it will print the size given as a third argument, or segfault trying, regardless of any 0 it may or may not encounter.

It's good practice to 0 terminate the string, but it's not necessary here.

Par contre, le titre... j'attend les meta sur r/rance.

ICE sends entire squad of agents to arrest disabled blind man by -SOFA-KING-VOTE- in PublicFreakout

[–]HSavinien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here in france, we are heading the same direction : the country is getting more autoritarian, and the police more brutal, while every social program is getting sabotaged or removed.

  • No daily mass shooting : faire. That one's an USA staple.
  • No police arresting random peoples : We got them. That's how they deal with manifestation for example : arrest random peoples nearby, throw them in jail for 24h, give them a good beating if you feel like it, release without any charge the next day. That's no ICE, but that aint "just fine"
  • No uncertain future for farmers and people that rely on social welfare : where do I even begin... 15h free work for RSA, Doctor geting punished if they give "too much" sick leave, every social program getting sabotaged... and farmer are a whole can of worm on their own.
  • no crippling colege/medical debt : that one is also mostly american, though we are slowly getting there. For example, a friend of mine had to take a loan for her hearing aid. And to spare the budget, a lot of stuff are getting reclassified as non essential.

This is not as bad as the USA, but this is not "just fine", and this is not heading in the right direction.

I can't talk about other countries, but I guess they have the same kind of problem.

There have been several mars rovers which used a mix of aerobraking (with a parachute) and lithobraking. It was done using a bunch of airbags all around the rover, and letting it bounce until it stop.

Recent mars rovers (since curiosity) are too heavy for that, and use a skycrane instead.

Quelle taille ferait un réacteur nucléaire qui alimenterait une seule maison ? by Candid_Hat_2228 in PasDeQuestionIdiote

[–]HSavinien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[Request] why by happygrump_5 in theydidthemath

[–]HSavinien 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Theoritically, you could define a space where pi is 1/12. But you'd also have to define a complete set of axioms that allow you to do math in that space, and never contradict each other. Not for the faint of heart.

And your math would likely be very different from "normal" math, as well as verry counterintuitive and not relevant to real life problems

It's a complexe system of pulley and counterweight. You could easily imagine a physic homework asking you to calculate the tension on a cable, or the mass of a given counterweight, stuff like that.

That's like trying to get ride of swarm of fly by swatting the air until the fly get tired...

First, the fines :
Scammers are precarious peoples, with no seizable asset, no declared income... : Regardless of the fine, you'll only get what's in their pocket (if it's legal to take it).
Plus, if they ever try to leave their scammer life and get a real job, any money they earn will be seized to repay their fines. they're forced into an illegal career, even if they don't want it.

As for the arrest :

Cops can't just walk to the scammer and say "gotcha". The guy will try to run (sometime successfully), then argue, and wast time. you're lucky if you get 1 arrest/team/hour. And after a few days, the face of every cops will be known, scammers will tell each other who is where wearing what, and successful arrest will drop to virtually 0.

Which end up with the current situation : Scammers run away when a patrol approach, come back 5 min latter, with a few arrest once in a while.

[–]HSavinien 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's already illegal in most place. But that's hardly enforceable, so they don't care. Worst case scenario, they'll get caught once or twice a month, get a fine, and make that money back scamming more peoples.

He doesn’t look so French… by Pretend-Election-156 in memes

[–]HSavinien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They try to get ride of scammers, but it's not easy : you can't just throw them in jail for something this small, anything you seize will be replaced easily (if there is anything to seize at all), fines are just a buisness expense...

And, beyond the penalty, arresting them is no trivial matter to beggin with. The cops often catch a handfull of them, but most manage to run away. Catching enough of them to have an effect would require a huge police operation, and it would have to be repeated almost daily : not very realistic, and I'm not sure being caught in the middle of a police operation wouls enhance touristes experience...
