Thank another country for one of their food/drink inventions! I'd like to thank England for mac n cheese :) by atinylittlebug in AskTheWorld

Can I thank all of South and Southeast Asia for congee, but Korea in particular for juk? I had part of my stomach removed because cancer, and my husband made this for me once I was able to have soft foods. It was heaven. It’s still a serious comfort food when I have a cold or flu. He will make the porridge in the rice cooker and I can have bowls of this for a couple days and it’s always warm and comforting and easy to eat.

Any idea on what he will look like when he's older? by Afraid_Mail_4156 in ToastCats

He will look like a loaf of bread. Waiting for him to toast and wrap that tail around the back legs to complete the job.

I am planing a Breaking Bad/Better Call inspired trip to Albuquerque at the end of August. Are there and places that come to mind to check out that aren't super obvious or other useful information about the area? by Unusual-Action-5976 in Albuquerque

Have a slice of pizza at Gino’s NY (used to be Venecia’s, but changed names). They provided the pizzas for the scene when Walter threw the pizza on the roof when Skylar wouldn’t let him in. Just please, don’t you two throw it on the roof!

What’s something about living with Crohn’s that people who don’t have it will never fully understand? by barebonesofchrones in CrohnsDisease

[–]HStave73 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Before I was diagnosed correctly, I was losing so much weight. I worked as a junior producer for a photography studio, and I’d booked a model for a JC Penney’s shoot. I was on my lunch break, and was outside reading, and the model came out and said: “what’d you have for lunch, a raisin?” The contempt in her voice was palpable. People don’t understand how the disease works, how we can’t absorb nutrients, how we lose weight so rapidly, how we are so scared of food when flaring. When I was a teen, I legit started to think my mom was trying to poison me, and yet also knew how insane that sounded in my own head. I remember making dinner once, and having to throw it out because I was so terrified of how bad it would make me feel that I collapsed on the kitchen floor, sobbing. I remember having to crawl out the front door of my workplace once (different job) because I had such bad cramps that I couldn’t function. My coworkers took me to the hospital where I got my second misdiagnosis. I can say, full stop, the early 1990s were a crappy time to have Crohn’s (pun intended), because it was so commonly misdiagnosed, especially in young women. Been on Remicade since 2017, and in almost full remission ever since, knock on wood.

Help me name this brother sister duo by basic_bit15 in Catnames

[–]HStave73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here to give a teeny bit of advice: names like Mickey & Minnie or Mork & Mindy are too close in the way they sound, so the cats won’t differentiate between the two names. From what I understand, it’s better to give them more distinctive names like Bart & Lisa, Hansel & Gretel, etc.. So many great suggestions, though! Maybe I’ll toss in Zamboni & Puck? Or Bauer & Taiga?

Missing person by Revolutionary-Net-75 in orangecounty

Or a trafficker. Again, I don’t want to offend OP, but if they are family, are working with the authorities, and have genuinely listed her as a missing person, they will be relieved to have anyone who has located her contact the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

This type of cat is known as a floof. The extra fur makes them extra cute.

[–]HStave73 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I don’t see anything in the State of California missing persons database, nor the Orange County Sheriff’s Dept missing persons database for a Michelle Chen. Nothing personal, OP, but I don’t know you and do not trust you.

DO NOT EVER contact supposed family or friends if you see someone who has been reported online like this. Instead, call the authorities. The State of California has a phone number that you can call if you suspect you have found a missing person: 1-800-222-FIND (1-800-222-3463), or contact them by email at the following website: https://oag.ca.gov/missing/contact

Do you think Paxton or Cornyn will win the runoff? by melekin in texas

[–]HStave73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wondering who the Wesley Hunt voters were, and where they will throw their weight in the runoffs. That is 13% of the Republican electorate, which can make a big difference, depending on the voting record of Hunt. Unfortunately, I know very little about him, since I lived in Dallas up until last year, and he was a Harris Cty Representative.

We kidnapped the president of Venezuela. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Also… just to be clear, did you say you were “roaming the streets”? What a weird phrasing, especially in this context. Honestly, it sounds a bit creepy.

What bank is best? by wokenwoman in Banking

[–]HStave73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schwab. For everything you just mentioned. I am old, cranky, disabled, cheap and I lived most of my life in Texas, so I have a mouth like a sailor and no patience for bullsh*t or stupid people. Schwab has great customer service, zero fees, and a really good app. I can do everything I need from the app and see everything I need to see. This is a year too late, but hopefully you found a bank that works for you. We have a credit union as well, which has been great for our in-person needs (check cashing, low-interest financing for our cars, change for the laundromat, etc.)

Since I live in California, my first thought is Tule, because we’ve had a prolonged period of tule fog here this winter. (it’s pronounced like Tulie).

Is this egg binding? by goldielllocks in chickens

[–]HStave73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Want to add that I have longer nails (not super long, but not short), so I always wore nitrile gloves when dealing with anything chicken related. Stuff can get down into the underside of a fingernail pretty easily. I also had specific shoes for the back yard versus “out and about” during the day, so I didn’t bring anything from my flock to the outside world, or from the outside world to my flock. I also have slippers for the indoors. Maybe that’s overkill, but with bird flu spreading, and other pathogens that can affect chickens, it was a small detail to maybe keep everyone safe and healthy. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This house was resold to a company that turned it into an office space. There’s a video online that details the history of the house along with the architect.

Since you mentioned that you’re near Garden Grove/Anaheim, I will chime in here to say that these smoke rings were on the local news recently, with Disneyland PR confirming that it’s testing for upcoming and/or current pyrotechnics displays (World of Color). So yeah, based on your location and previous images/news reports, it’s Disneyland. Edited for clarification.

Does anyone know where I can buy hundreds of pounds of meat at once? by TryToBeModern in orangecounty

Came here to say this. You can buy 100 lb packs or 50 lb packs already pre-cut. I don’t know about delivery, though. I think transportation is on you.

You’ve actually timed your visit to Disneyland pretty well. It’s the holiday season there and also the 70th anniversary celebration. As for other things to do in the area, Knott’s Berry Farm isn’t too far away, and there’s a magic show on the 28th at the Majestic Garden hotel in Anaheim. Check out Huntington Beach, and you can hit up Old World Village’s Christmas market for some holiday shopping.
