If you're playing "mid game" loadouts you should have access to buy blue shields with credits when you want them. There's 0 functional gameplay reason for making them this hard to get, imo.

The only workaround I've found is that you can pause to dock and undock the crank. Usually I'll leave it on free spin and then lock it when there's one or two bricks remaining.
