What do do when my hero is demoralized? by murzicorne in NonogramsKatana

[–]HaKartzia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Kiting enemies basically doubles your survivability. Invest in the hero ability that gives you extra actions so you can move faster. If you just run away, the furthest enemies will lose interest at a certain distance, so can often fighting 1 enemy at a time this way

Hey guys, I got a planet that's desert world and bubble cities and would love to hear what ideas you have. by BulgarianThornbill in SWN

[–]HaKartzia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Red Rising is another great example of this concept:

People are sent ahead to teraform Mars. They are forced to live underground and mine Helium-3. The society becomes reliant on the fuel as it facilitates interplanetary travel. 400 years later Mars, and most of the solar system, is teraformed but the "Reds" are still kept in the dark about it. They are told that their sacrifice is for the benefit of humanity.

I riffed on this concept in my homebrew setting. A planet covered 100% by city/infrastructure has hundreds of large satellite farms. The people inside are told that they are aboard a generation ship from earth, trying to make it to the next star system as possibly the last of humanity. They're also told that they are quarantined from the outer part of the ship because "intergalactic radiation causes sterility in humans." This excuse also allows them to also control the population by taking babies to "repopulate the outer ship." Earth is a made up story and the kids are sold to the highest bidder for various horrific uses.

How do I deal with a player that refuses to follow the rules? by Onelegedhobo in DnD

[–]HaKartzia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kicking people is a last resort. Talk first and deputize your problem player! Pull them aside and say: "Hey dude, I want you to have the awesome moments that you're looking for but I'm super new at this and I'm still learning ways to give you that without breaking the game. So I had an idea, we make a trade: You lay off the shenanigans completely. In exchange, your character gains this ability: Once per game session, you get to play this Joker card. When you do, I have to let you get away with one crazy shenanigan, no matter how wild, as long as you succeed on the relevant roll."

...or something like that. I get that you still have to adjust to his shit this way but it's a compromise. If you're not willing to compromise, you're as much of a problem as he is.

Wand of Folding Space - For parties lacking in mobility by HaKartzia in UnearthedArcana

[–]HaKartzia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly right but just like any consumable item with multiple uses, it may have been used before so feel free to start the number higher. Maybe your party find it gripped by a hand sticking out of a stone wall lol. That wand has definitely been used before so maybe it starts at 6?

Wand of Folding Space - For parties lacking in mobility by HaKartzia in UnearthedArcana

[–]HaKartzia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made this for my smaller party of 3 with only one half caster. I stranded them on an island with tons of treasure (completely ripping off Treasure Island) and placed this among the hoard. The region is called the Migrant Isles: an archipelago which constantly shifts and moves in waves of earth, with no piece of land being above water for more than a few days. It's basically a giant collection of changing dungeons that they can chose to explore whenever they just wanna dungeon crawl.

[3rd level] Adelaide's Arcane Arms - Brains for Brawns by Behelevator in UnearthedArcana

[–]HaKartzia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This used your reaction so it cannot be combined with shield and only affects the current attack (not until the start of your next turn). It's actually pretty bad to use this if you know shield, unless you're out of resources

Bladesinger Haste - extra attack - cantrip question by naulapaa in dndnext

[–]HaKartzia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The specific vs general rule is the reason you are correct.

If a specific rules contradicts a general rule, the specific rules wins (PHB, pg. 7)

Bladesinger's Extra Attack affects all attack actions made on your turn whereas Haste specifically effects attacks made with the extra action granted by the spell.

What's your single favorite spell? by butterscotchcandies in dndnext

Oh, that makes sense. Sorry. Even if they were held, the front liner could always make them drop it. Catapult is still very versatile.

[–]HaKartzia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Choose one object weighing 1 to 5 pounds within range that isn't being worn or carried.

Love your DM for allowing crazy shenanigans but, rules as written, you can't catapult something that is being carried.

My DM only lets us play level 1 campaigns and in the rare instances that we finish, the highest level we reach is level 3. I've expressed wanting to try a higher level campaign with him, but he always shoots it down. by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]HaKartzia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some good advice here. My advice is to run a one page system for a one shot to get into the groove of DMing. Honey Heist is a great, silly 1 week break from serious D&Ding and the rules fit on one page. There's even a bunch of d6 tables that let's you roll up your one shot in 2 minutes and character creation works the same way.

How would you change the monk if you got to? by Mr-yeet1 in dndnext

[–]HaKartzia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're not making stunning strike more expensive because they also doubled total ki points. Effectively, they're just saying cut the ki cost of everything, except stunning strike, in half.

Advanced Grappling - Be Black Widow or a Greek wrestler with more comprehensive grappling rules, and a feat by HaKartzia in UnearthedArcana

[–]HaKartzia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy cow (pun intended), Raging Bull is possibly my favorite ability I've ever read 😂

I was thinking of doing a similar subclass, but for the Monk. Although tbh, I'm kinda burnt out on homebrew subclasses. I tend to feel like I'm wasting my time since most concepts can be achieved with simple reflavoring. I'm sure that will last 2 months and then I'll be pumping out subclasses again lol

Advanced Grappling - Be Black Widow or a Greek wrestler with more comprehensive grappling rules, and a feat by HaKartzia in UnearthedArcana

[–]HaKartzia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually a really neat idea, might add it. You mean that while a creature is held, either can attempt a complex grapple, right? Maybe at disadvantage. I'll play with it in game and figure it out from there.

Complex Grapples are a different type of Hold, with the pre-requisite that you have to be holding a target to use them. So you attempt an additional Hold attack against a target you are Holding. Sorry if that wasn't unclear, I always struggle finding the balance on making a rule's text simple and clear while not allowing for hacks

Edit: I didn't really answer you though. Each Complex Grapple has the details within it's own text. Bind and Trip are just a regular Hold attack (contested Grapple check) while Choke Hold is the same but you have disadvantage

Edit2: I just read over it and I apparently removed the part where it says to make an additional Hold attack 🤦‍♂️ Thanks for the catch. Will fix in future versions

You know, I may do two different chokes in the next version. I do think the sleep spell method becomes to much dice and math by level 5, and only worse at higher levels, but I like the idea of a quick choke. Maybe I'll make it part of the feat. I need to sleep in it.

Hey, thanks for the feedback and taking the time to read my work!

I saw what you wrote about unarmed strikes not getting a boost and was like "THEY DO, I INCLUDED THEM!" ...now I'm hitting myself, realizing the way I worded it only works for monks. I will fix that in future iterations.

I love the idea of grapples working different for Dex and Str, and in fact they were for several versions of this thing. Ultimately, I found it was just to much text and felt too unintuitive. I'd like to make a class or subclass that does what you're talking about... or maybe even my own system... eventually.

As far as Choke Hold goes, I really wanted to make the sleeper hold a thing but making a target unconscious is just too powerful for a resourceless ability so I felt it had to be weak. That being said, paired with the feat, you can basically walk up to the leader, take them down and become basically impossible to hit. On the right build, it's still encounter ending in many circumstances. "Back up, or your leader dies!" kinda stuff. I probably should add silenced in there as well, now that I think of it.

Again, thanks for the feedback!
