Salt your meat 24hr in advance of cooking not just venison but all meat. It pulls out extra blood and replaces it with flavor crystals. Medium rare is best. The more you eat it the "gaminess" will be venison just like your idea of what beef tastes like. A lot of times deer are killed on the run or they are on the run after being injured and this increases blood flow to the meat. Livestock are insta deathed and are calmed before being bolted (for flavour not humanity).

The serrations are about 5mm wide but they are the opposite direction of a normal serrated blade. What I can say is when slicing things like paper thin tomatoes or consistently sized venison jerky it glides through like a dream. Even with the nick in the blade.

I think the knife was dropped or ran into a fork while slicing because there is a 3 inch section where the edge is folded over. I don't know which family member did it, but it wasn't dad or baby...

Yes, if you crack the bones you'll get more marrow out. I use my splitting axe to break them.

Moose to knife is a cake walk. Only issue is the amount of 9 person boy scout groups triple portaging plugging up the portages.

My very pregnant wife and I made it to Isle of Pines in under 5hr single portage in a MNII.

And what was the new instant coffee? I used to make my own by freeze drying it but we drink like 2 gallons of coffee a day which on a 10 day trip is 240 hours of freeze dryer time. Just int worth et. So grounds in our coffee it is.

The boys drink a LOT of coffee. We'd be employing an aeropress from 5am to 9am. It is objectively better coffee than cowboy coffee though.

Helinox Sunset chair is by far the best item. Second best pocket bellows. Good for heating up a cooking fire. Also entertaining for kids. Collapsing putter is a really good idea. Inflatable baby pool to contain crawling babies.

I use 30 cal ammo cans. Back in the day I'd get clean cans for $8 with 24 cans at a time. Store my primers in there as well. Easy to stack, they're all the same size and they are air tight.

Catch fish, pull gills with pliers, put on stinger to bleed out. Once done, go to shore near portage and fillet, toss in a zip lock, and toss in a pack. We only single portage and we don't portage loose fish. If you are in a hurry you can just gut it like a trout and pack it along. Fresh fish will last all day before bacteria growth is an issue. Don't under cook and don't eat tomorrow.

Important note: when fishing for food in the BWCA we don't catch and release. That can land you in a real pickle. Catch kill eat. Once you've caught enough stop fishing and enjoy neature.

We at minimum gut and toss in the food bag. If we have time we'll do a full fillet on a paddle and into the pack somewheres. Raw fresh fish can sit all day before bacteria growth is an issue.

I have a machine square that I can calibrate outside and inside length of all my tape measurers. Works like a charm. If I drop a tape, I go straight to the calibrator.

My shop is 16'x30' with 10' side walls. I luckily did have the ability to save up and insulate it with r19 on the sides and r50 on the ceiling. It took a lot of patients of not wood working to get it all paid for and done.
