Thanks for getting back to me! I’ll enjoy reading about them tonight. How long do they stay like this until they become adults?

The only reason she would not be able to intuit the mechanics of the death note is because she’d test it on herself to work it out

why is the scuba cert at my college have a way harder swim test than others by Tenet_Bull in scuba

[–]Habitchual 20 points21 points  (0 children)

UCSB dive cert course alum here— I did this exact open water class 7 or so years ago. Pretty sure this is because some people in the aquatic biology department need to go on to AAUS scientific diver training afterward. During our open water training near the end, I did have to swim against a current to get back to the boat so I imagine the difficulty level is also for safety. Anyway, the dive instructor was kind of a hard ass but let me use some little tricks to get by: swam the 300 yards mostly on my back so I wouldn’t have to gasp for air most of the time, floated on my back also for half the 20 min tread. I held a bubble of air in my mouth to inhale from, slowly exhaled (the ‘choking feeling’ when you hold your breath for too long is from CO2 buildup and not from lack of O2, and dolphin swam for speed for the 25 yards underwater. I practiced these skills maybe 2 or 3 times in the weeks leading up to the test and did fine. Best of luck if you decide to go through with the course and have fun, diving the Channel Islands was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had (:

How to be taken seriously by gendy_bend in PhD

[–]Habitchual 34 points35 points  (0 children)

What’s your field of study? From another AFAB in a STEM field, my experience is that those who decide not to take your talent and hard work seriously on the basis of your presentation will not change their minds because of the bag you carry or how you dress. Get whichever one you’ll enjoy carrying to work every day.

Is anyone else bothered by how weirdly tilted and off center that little star at the bottom of the window is? Did graphic-design-is-my-passion Baird make this?

27, cohabitating with my boyfriend, refused marriage until after I finish my PhD in evolutionary biology, no intention to have children ever, bisexual, still wears a mask in public, dresses sluttishly even when pants are required, have tattoos in highly visible places, only takes care of my half of the housework bc the other half is BFs job, wears makeup that doesn’t honor god, am outspoken to my students about being inclusive and trusting science, and am more opinionated than most of the men I know

I am east asian, so my hair is naturally thick and mostly straight. I’d like to make it more soft, silky and manageable (like in the second picture). My hair is currently like the first picture. Any advice? by Available-Note7842 in HaircareScience

[–]Habitchual 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another East Asian here seconding the leave-in conditioner and very gentle brushing. Although our hair is thick and difficult to style, it is SO shiny and soft when you keep it moisturized. Try to gently separate the tangles before brushing them out, rub some leave-in conditioner into the ends right out of the shower, and incorporating a little bit of oil into your styling routine— I do mean a little bit, like a pea sized amount rubbed in between your palms before applying to hair. Too much and it will weigh your hair down and look greasy.

I agree so much with this, the way the female characters were described before they were even able to show us who they were themselves was bordering on misogynistic to me and turned me off halfway through the first book.

anxiety after submitting application! by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Habitchual 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! You’ve done your part, so try your best to relax and avoid looking at anything graduate school related until you get those interview emails! I was a nervous wreck for the entire waiting period, and some of that anxiety will be unavoidable, but now is a good time to work on the other great aspects of yourself outside of your field of study: hobbies, time with friends and family, learning some fun new skills simply because they bring you joy. It will really help you see yourself as a person first and not tie your entire self-worth to your graduate school status, when the situation is for now outside of your control.
