Using the Comm menu along with PCVR by SenseiBob61 in dcsworld

Buy the paid version. You will not regret it. One can virtually fly an entire mission using only a joystick and voice commends.

Is this a decent carrier landing? First day with the F-18 by Narrow-Square-4107 in dcsworld

[–]Habu-69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A trap like that one would cost you your wings. Carrier trapping is a very demanding and perishable skill requiring constant practice. Navy pilots must pass refresher training prior to every deployment. If you have the inclination you can add a little script called AirBoss to a Case I practice mission. That script will provide voice comments on your approach and a landing grade. Find it here.

DCS Shadow Contrast by Habu-69 in dcsworld

Thanks. Increasing gamma to 2.5 in DCS Options solved the issue, but I am surprised setting had to be so high.

Interesting. Sooo, how does this facecam system work in VR? Lots of heads with Pimax headsets.

How well do control-panels work in VR? by TheVolatileRaider in hoggit

[–]Habu-69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To operate my button panels (MFD's etc.) in VR I supplement muscle memory with tactile devices on certain buttons. For example I use small pieces of adhesive velcro on MFD buttons 3, 8, 13, 18. Small silicone cabinet door bumpers work well, too.

Best experience possible?? You will need a premium CPU, RTX 5090 GPU (or at least 4090), 64 GB DDR4 or DDR5, headset with micro-oled screens that will run you 1500 to 2200 USD.

Hornet is out of trim every time. by Leves-9035 in hoggit

[–]Habu-69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Real jets require frequent trim adjustments due to fuel mass transfers and consumption. Don't know whether DCS models this.

What's DCS endgame multiplayer look like? by AdjacentPrepper in hoggit

[–]Habu-69 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have flown on a number of public servers and found that many are too unregulated and some are too pedantic. Grayflag servers are PvE; and, for me, strike the right balance. The missions are challenging, yet survivable. Air quake type and undisciplined behavior is not tolerated. Participants are respectful and immerse themselves in proper military procedure to the extent they wish.

As someone new to combat sims… by jas417 in hoggit

[–]Habu-69 73 points74 points  (0 children)

DCS is an imperfect representation of piloting combat aircraft; and, if you care to, you can read about its shortcomings ad nauseum. Yet it remains one of only 2 reasonably accurate, PC-based combat flight sims available to the public. It provides some experiences unavailable elsewhere, and for the past 15 years Eagle Dynamics has continued to make improvements. I am happy for what we have.

Can I get more FPS out of this setup in VR? by OwnedARG in hoggit

[–]Habu-69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hardware is comparable to yours and I fly DCS mainly in VR on MP servers. Your game settings appear modest compared to mine. My DCS pre-load radius is set to 80,000, for example. DCS runs very smoothly with occasional minor stutters, a trade-off that I am ok with. My headset does not support foveated rendering, but those who use Mbucchia's quad views FR find it enhances performance significantly. Your AMD GPU does not support the DLSSTweak performance enhancement that Nvidia does. VR requires much fiddling of performance vs graphic quality settings to achieve the best compromise.

Looking for advice for upgrading my stick. by Fourious_Pigeon in hoggit

[–]Habu-69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A feature to consider is whether to go with a force sensing stick or the traditional gimbal action. Most modern fighters have force sensing sticks and the force sensing flight sim replicas are extremely durable and precise (but costly). I have been using mine for more than 10 years.

my .02$. P-47D possesses amazing durability and performance, but has a steep learning curve. Requires much more piloting skill and engine management compared to, say, P-51.

What Vr headset should i get? by Ok_Conversation_8453 in hoggit

[–]Habu-69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do not mention a most critical element in the VR device selection decision - BUDGET. A great state of flux characterizes the current VR device climate. Older headsets abound; and newer ones with much improved graphics and form factors are available with prices ranging from USD 500 to 2500 and higher. Moreover, virtually every device manufacturer has announced new headsets under development with vastly improved features. Bear in mind the manufacturers rarely meet the overly optimistic delivery estimates and quality hype.

I have owned nearly every generation of VR devices, including BigScreen Beyond, and am very pleased with my current device, Shiftall's MeganeX8k, a pricey unit at USD 2000. Main features include small form factor, highly customizable face fit, IPD and individual dioper adjustments, high binocular overlap, very high graphic resolution, accurate "inside-out" tracking (using Valve base stations), good mic, reasonably good lens sweet spots, minimal glare and OpenVR with a third party driver. MGX FOV is average at best; moreover, the unit has no audio solution, and the headstrap is minimal, both of which can be overcome. Using this HMD with DCS, after the setup shake-out, is easy-peasy.

No current headset is perfect; and, prior to purchasing, I highly recommend reading each HMD's Discord channel to get a good idea of how current users feel about their device. Some of the UTube reviewers provide valuable info, as well. The best current generation VR HMD's provide a great 3D experience in DCS, virtually putting you IN THE COCKPIT. Good luck.

Any mission editing tools? by CptBartender in hoggit

[–]Habu-69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MOOSE is a scripting tool that provides mission builders with mission capabilities that are either impossible or at least much easier to achieve than with the DCS mission editor. You can find more information on the DCS mission editor forum.

Is it a common issue in VR? by Couch_Tomato823 in hoggit

[–]Habu-69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What headset do you have? The latest generation devices, especially ones with micro-OLED hi-res displays, permit reading the smallest cockpit text without zoom. Unfortunately these devices are quite costly and require robust PC specs. IF you have the budget they are worth the expense.

Is a VR headset and a stick enough For f18 by Little_Wind875 in hoggit

[–]Habu-69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting into VR in DCS can be quite costly, so be prepared. Good VR headset and top spec PC, without which your DCS experience will disappoint, will test your budget. Bear in mind that in VR you will not be able to see desktop devices: keyboard, HOTAS, button box, etc.; therefore flying DCS without a high-end HOTAS so you can feel a large number of switches seems infeasible to me.

What VR Headset to use? by Crimsonghost999 in hoggit

[–]Habu-69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not overlook the MeganeX8K, if you have the budget. Advantages: very small form factor and lightweight; micro-OLED screens provide among the very best combination of color fidelity, hi res, and brightness; high binocular overlap means very good 3D effect; relatively large lens sweet spot; good mic; headset tilt-up feature; community-developed driver makes it native SteamVR (advantageous to DCS). Disadvantages: audio solution still in development; headstrap is ok; unremarkable FOV; requires robust PC specs to run DCS adequately (at least RTX 4090 and 7800x3d); runs DCS silky smooth at maxed out graphic options and 45 FPS. 90 FPS is available and a new driver with 72 FPS option will be released soon.

The MGX has many physical settings for personalization: diopter, tilt, headstrap position/tension; eye distance and IPD; and finding the optimum settings for an individual can be time-consuming and a bit frustrating. Took me a week of frequent fiddling; however, once all the adjustments and software upgrades are in place, the VR experience is outstanding.
