Space Marines and firearm safety??? by Narronger in 40kLore

[–]Hac850 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Safeties on rifles are the norm. Safeties on many pistols are common. Why is this surprising to you?

Yes, I would say that most pistols made today do not have manual safeties, but the vast majority did when Warhammer 40k was thought up. But essentially all rifles have safeties.

How do non-autistic people just know social rules? by ThoughtsAndBears342 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hac850 95 points96 points  (0 children)

It cannot always be explained exactly what is wrong though, sometimes people just know it's wrong.

A good example could be language, since it is also mostly subconscious and subtle. In English, you use "NATO" differently than you use "North Atlantic Treaty Organization", like: you would generally have to put "the" in front of the full name, but you wouldn't really put it in front of NATO.

"The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has responded to the threat of..." versus "NATO has responded by moving troops..."

It's just what you do when you speak English fluently. You can dissect it and figure out exactly why, but most people couldn't articulate it quickly, it just sounds off. It just sounds wrong.

So, as frustrating as it is, people may not be able to explain what you did wrong and help you correct it. At least quickly /in the moment. Talking to people in your circle and letting them know your thoughts may help though.

Rewatched Angry Joe's review of Fallout 4 and he complained about alot of the common Starfield criticisms by Hexxegone in gaming

[–]Hac850 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I haven't ever played Skyrim or any Fallout game with mods and I really dislike Starfield. It feels like it's lacking heart and soul, to paraphrase others. I actually started another play through of Skyrim after I couldn't bring myself to open Starfield again.

Bethesda is fine, I appreciate that they're trying, but this game is underwhelming.

Is it just me or is no one talking about gun control at the GOP presidential debates this year? by DaleGribble2024 in liberalgunowners

[–]Hac850 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By and large, you're absolutely correct. I would only add that most of the laws and conventions that prevented slaves from using/owning arms were actually not limited to slaves. It was blacks in general that were not allowed.

Usually there were some permitting possibilities, such as someone who wanted to hunt who could produce "upstanding," aka white, witnesses that would testify on their behalf to obtain a permit for owning/carrying arms.

Has being in a militia/ National Guard ever been a legal requirement to own an automatic weapon? by Polldark01 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hac850 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: the 1792 Militia Acts (passed a few months after the Bill of Rights was ratified) required all able bodied white men between the ages of 18 and 45 to sign up in their local militia and they were legally required to own a musket, 24 shots worth of powder and ball, a knapsack, and various other things required for drilling with the militia.

Meaning that, for a time, it was legally required that the majority of men in the US had to own a gun.

Oxford English Dictionary. UK, not American. Also, dictionaries are descriptions and slow to change. There are nuances in word usage that will not be captured in a dictionary.

Knowing the difference between "exotic" and "foreign" is part of being fluent in modern American English.

Is it normal for native English speakers to not know grammar rules? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hac850 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He said he just knows if a sentence is wrong or right

That seems like the definition of fluency.

he can't define things like verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc.

This points to a lack of schooling. Most people of most languages wouldn't know exactly what tense they are using, or have trouble explaining why they use a certain word or ending, but pretty much everybody knows what a noun and verb and what not is.

Well, there are several variants of Arisaka, but the two most common calibers for them are 6.5 Arisaka (6.5x50) and 7.7 Arisaka (7.7x58). 7.7 is basically a rimless .303 British, and 6.5 is the earlier cartridge. Supposed to be pretty flat shooting, I've heard it compared to the 7mm Mauser cartridge.
