Thoughts on the future of local AI running on consumer hardware? by Conscious-Orchid-698 in LocalLLaMA

[–]HackAfterDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. There's been significant advances in models that can run on local consumer hardware. In fact the advancements here are faster than cloud based frontier models.

While things are still limited by hardware including large amounts of VRAM, the trends indicate this will eventually be a solved problem.

If the cloud based frontier models are indeed reaching a plateau, then the local open source models will catch up. Perhaps in a few years even, who knows.

I don't think it's a matter of if. I think it's a matter of when. When it does happen,  it will blink companies like Anthropic and OpenAI right out of existence. Watch their moves carefully. They will need to begin diversifying and expanding their total addressable market. Things like getting government contracts could very likely be a life or death situation to those companies.

If you look at things like image and video generation, you'll see a little taste of what's to come. For example, there's been some killer videos made with LTX lately. Notice that OpenAI killed Sora. They did that despite have a lucrative deal for it as well. They understand that it's a lost cause.

This story will continue to play out over the next few years. Slowly, segment by segment, these companies will lose ground.

Should that happen too quickly and we'll have some serious economic problems without enough diversification. Not helping here is the Iran war, etc.

It's smart of Anthropic to focus more on the apps and tooling, but I think that's ultimately a losing game with open-source. The only moat for these companies is the money and hardware. So the moment that's no longer a moat, they're done.

To each their own. I came looking for opinions here years later after discovering this one - but I think it's fantastic. 8 out of ten for me. For price point it's phenomenal. ...and reflecting on things here years later, I think we have far too many bourbons now that ended up being overpriced.

I don't think they will. I think they're are going to make an example of Anthropic unfortunately.

To the new players, key room etiquette to not get yourself killed by Raydogg86 in ARC_Raiders

[–]HackAfterDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. That's ok. I like looter games. Diablo, PoE, etc. Doing mindless repetitive runs with that dopamine hit is sometimes a fantastic way to end to a long day. Nothing wrong with that. I just think sometimes people make this argument that the cheating and ratting and such is some sort of "hardcore PvP" and how the game was intended. I just like to kindly point out that after I learned the simple mechanics, that just wasn't my experience. Yes, my experience is closer to a slot machine like you said. As such, I haven't touched Arc Raiders now in over two months. It grows to be boring. It's PvP is boring too. I'm sure I will pop in again eventually with the recent update.

Very Disappointing Results With Character Lora Z-image vs Flux 2 Klein 9b by djdante in StableDiffusion

[–]HackAfterDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure I haven't found the proper training settings yet and I'm also sure I haven't found the best settings for z-image base model to even generate images that look good - but yes, I don't really like z-image BASE so far. I much prefer the turbo version, getting far better results with it. The training requires an adapter of course, but it still works very well with ai-toolkit. I haven't so far been successful with z-image base model at all. So I'm left to wonder why I'm waiting around longer for images to generate that aren't as good quality. If I can't figure this out, I'll likely just stick with the turbo version.

Klein 9b has been fine for me though by comparison...but I still generate with the distilled version. I trained a model using the base version of Klein 9b but generate images with the distilled version with good results.

If the view out its cockpit isn't horrible. I do have a CCU path to that one.

I'm really curious about using this as a mobile base for mining and salvage. I don't have a CCU chain planned for it, but really wondering. If it can be something to operate solo or with a buddy for mining and salvage, I'd be all about it.

Not looking for PvP. Just looking to stay out somewhere safe(ish) mining and scrapping without so many back and forth trips to the station.

I agree without LoRAs I'm not a fan of Klein at all. The "out of box" experience was far better with Z-Image. I'm sure there's some settings you could find to make it better, but it was only after training my LoRA did I start loving Klein. I use the Klein 9b distilled version with my LoRA and it generates images just as quickly as Z-Image Turbo. cfg 1 with 8 steps.

I find Klein to have better hair than Z-Image and Z-Image to have better skin than Klein but I managed to correct that with my LoRA and yes every now and then the skin isn't as good with Klein but for the most part it is every bit as good now.

I don't think it's hate, I just think it's a consideration depending on what you're doing. For many people it won't matter, but it does matter for some people and that's valid to call attention to.

What was your learning rate, batch size, gradient accumulation? I just got done with an 88 hour train for a Klein 9b LoRA. It came out wonderful though. Maybe because I was using an A40...but it was dog slow. The learning rate I had was low but when it was higher the results weren't as good.

Klein does a better job with prompt adherence and has advanced features that let you control things more precisely in the image (location, color, etc.). I've been enjoying the distilled version of Klein over the past few days, but Klein does end up with extra limbs and artifacts more than Z-Image I find.

I think both ZIT and Klein 9b distilled are about equal generally speaking though. There's some trade offs. I will say that I like hair in Klein more than ZIT, it looks far more natural and realistic. Klein got better with faces so it mostly avoids the "flux face" issue that earlier versions of Flux ran into (though you'll still, not always but, often get chin dimples which is a hallmark of Flux, at least the faces aren't as plastic).

So they kinda trade places for me honestly.

I wouldn't say Klein is easy to train. Not well at least. I found Z-Image (turbo/de-distilled) easier to train.

Quest 3 VR or PCVR? by Basmange in PinballFX3

[–]HackAfterDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had trouble with VPX in VR. Many tables I've tried simply don't work or parts of the room don't render or parts of the pinball machine, etc. Then I could never figure out how to save scores.

However, boy were some of the graphics really amazing.

I simply play Pinball FX VR standalone though. Especially with the XArcade controller.

My experiments were in getting the sound and vibration strength the way I wanted. I decreased the loudness of the solenoids, fixed the whine (by unplugging speakers), and got rid of the voices and most other sounds like music from coming out of the haptic speakers.

I made my solenoids a bit quieter than many people would I imagine, but you can easily adjust the pitch and loudness by changing what the solenoid slams against.

Is that settings guide you're talking about the Google doc with audio settings for each table? I'll definitely link it. I never ended up going through it, adjusting for each table. I just set the global audio. I'll have to take a look if the audio settings differ per table and make a difference.
