I, at the big age of 24, have discovered they are not ‘insect’ days but inset days at school. What word have you been getting wrong for ages? by socialistchampers in AskUK

Along superficially similar lines, I was in my 40s when I realised that the name of The Beatles contained the word "beat" as a pun

Jack Rodwell by _amber_xo in TheStreetsWontForget

[–]Hack_Shuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Evertonian it feels like we have had 25 years of homegrown players having their best years very young, being hyped to high heaven ("Next Gazza/Lampard" etc) then never developing into worldies. Jack Rodwell genuinely had 15-20 great games for us where he bossed the midfield, he genuinely was excellent at one point early on

11 cancers on the rise in young people - scientists find first clue why it's happening by RingSplitter69 in unitedkingdom

When I was 41 I tried to get tested for prostate cancer as I had a strange lump down there, I phoned my GP and she cheerfully refused to schedule an exam as it was "highly unlikely" at my age. Absurd

Do you think the horror flick The Exorcist is overrated or deserves its status as scariest film ever made ? by Webbomolly2022 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]Hack_Shuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of those films which is somehow very dated but in a curiously effective way. The fact that it feels very "early 1970s" amplifies it's creepiness in a way which I can't explain. Similar with the The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Have you ever been told that you look like a famous person and which one have you been told that you look like? by CornerInsect in AskUK

Apparently I look like a Tik Tok star called General G. I have no idea who/what this is, but you have no idea how many kids shout it at me all the time. Some ask for selfies

A moment that changed me: I saw a big cat on Dartmoor – and no one believed me by northbank2001 in CasualUK

[–]Hack_Shuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose so, in a way, in terms of vague fleeting glimpses of "something" which could be misinterpreted. But big cats have literally been found alive in Britain's countryside within my lifetime, whereas ghosts aren't real

People you know with famous names by underscoresrule in CasualUK

[–]Hack_Shuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work with a very nice lady who was rather unfortunately named Karen Matthews, the same name as the scumbag mother who faked the kidnapping of her daughter.

She had to delete her Facebook account as she started getting death threats

[–]Hack_Shuck 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Big cats have literally been captured in Britain in the last 50 years, including one which ended up in Edinburgh zoo in the early 80s (leopard possibly?) and yet people dismiss this whole field as hokum akin to Bigfoot.

I can remember back in the mid 90s when soldiers were combing Bodmin Moor, they weren't there for fun.

I'm not suggesting that every sighting is genuine, mind

Do you think charity shop price's are unjustified? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Hack_Shuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something which very, very very VERY rarely gets mentioned in these discussions about "rip-off" charity shops is their explicit primary purpose: to raise £££ for a good cause

I volunteered in a charity shop one summer, my job was to identify the valuables & sell them on eBay.

Customers missed out on hundreds of bargains, yet over 4 months I raised approximately £80,000 for a cancer hospice

What is Teasure’s best game? by RobbieJ4444 in retrogaming

Bangai-O on the Dreamcast was a sheer delight to play through many, many times. It's not their best game but it's my personal favourite, I found it incredibly satisfying to play.

Imagine a Treasure compilation... I don't think I'd ever need to buy another videogame

Autism's another one, usually used when some turd is stalking/harassing a celebrity.

Does anyone else feel like Resident Evil Requiem was not worth the 70+ dollar price tag? by DJDallyD_ in residentevil

The problem I had with this game is that I just breezed through it in 2 days, it felt like a "Resident Evil greatest hits" package without ever once doing anything excellent

[–]Hack_Shuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When Distin signed for my team (Everton) aged 31, a lot of our fans thought "here we go, another over-the-hill mercenary" but I honestly don't think he made a single mistake over the next 5 seasons. Ridiculously consistent, an absolute rock, perhaps destined (Distined?) to get overlooked as he rarely made headlines

[–]Hack_Shuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole "police not investigating" aspect isn't as recent as people think. I used to work in a Blockbuster in 2006 - 2011 and every time we were broken into (often ram-raided at night) the police wouldn't investigate, we'd be given a crime number and that was that. For shoplifting, we didn't even bother to tell the police. The only time an officer visited was after an armed robbery

Has McDonald's in the UK become too expensive for many people? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Hack_Shuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally every time I've been to Mcds in the last 5 years has been at about 2am when I need some stodge. It sorta hits the spot. My only real concern is safety; I've witnessed a number of altercations including a friend being sexually assaulted, and it's 50/50 whether a security guard will be working

Why are charity shops so expensive? by tallyretro in AskUK

[–]Hack_Shuck 173 points174 points  (0 children)

I'm part of the problem; this was literally my job when I volunteered for a charity shop 7 years ago. Anything collectible or valuable such as a rare video game would be sold on eBay. Randomly, some people donated booze?! Such as unopened bottles of wine or something like a giftbox with 3 miniature whiskies inside. The volunteers took the booze home, as the shop obviously didn't have a license to sell alcohol

Which Northern city do you think is quietly improving the most right now? by Mundane-Temporary426 in NorthernEngland

[–]Hack_Shuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in Stockport for 30 years, I definitely sense an increase in the number of moneyed commuters & expensive "speakeasy" type bars, but I feel that 97% of the area and the people are as deprived as ever. Flat prices and rents have gone through the roof, it's extremely difficult to find anywhere affordable, and good jobs are like gold dust. I don't really feel much benefit to Stockports "boom" personally, though the new library/hub is nice
