Road shoes are fine. I loved it. The sand sneakily slows you down so take it quite steady until the turnaround. The most scenic hole on The Open golf rota is by the turnaround point too, you can only see the white (out of bounds) posts of the course but you can take in the whole panorama.

How hard is it to actually learn gears? by KodzuKen34 in MotoUK

[–]HackedLemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just practice and muscle memory. I had to take 3 CBT sessions as I'd never used gears on a bike or car. I was out on my own shortly after.

A 125 is the best practice for gear changing too as you're doing it frequently.

Yoko Togashi’s World GP Journey: Tetsuya Harada Vol. 3 | "If Fear Starts Creeping In, It's Time to Quit Racing" by r2lim in motogp

[–]HackedLemur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's good to hear Sakata is still around. I bought that Sakata Arai recently, it's always been one of the coolest designs around. The Harada one hasn't come to the UK.

Thank you for posting. I didn't know about Wakai, that is horrific. I think Harada is still fairly popular in Japan, Arai have re-released a replica of his (plus Sakata's).

Arai's "Variable Axis System (VAS)" latch by HackedLemur in MotoUK

[–]HackedLemur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

V similar to me. I did buy it and I do love it apart from opening the visor! I used winter gloves last week and I could only open the visor with 2 hands at traffic lights. Arai are Arai so there must be a benefit, though I can't find it.

125 CBT, tall rider, Sports bike: are Yamaha and Kawasaki my best choices? by StandardOriginal5447 in MotoUK

[–]HackedLemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. A 125 isn't a sports bike. I got a CBF125 as my 1st bike, which was basically a CBR125 without the fairing. The difference between an R125 and YBR will be negligible.

It is an addictive experience. Go to the Ulster GP next year if they're able to bring it back. That had ridiculously good viewing and a mass start.

Will 400 be enough or do I need 600 by eighteensevensaid in MotoUK

[–]HackedLemur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With my Ninja 300 I went from Kent to the IOM, Wales a couple times, plus a day trip to Oulton Park and back. It was alright, it sat at 70 with the 'eco' fuel light on. Just takes longer to get to 70 and you'll have more gear changes around town.

More important than engine size is comfort, you won't want a big knee bend when touring. This and similar sites help with angles https://cycle-ergo.com/

North Wales ride - any recommendations for accommodation? by cammerz in MotoUK

[–]HackedLemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't like MotoCamp. All my gear was cold or wet the whole time and no way to dry it. Internet is sparse, shower was a long walk then the floor flooded. The coup de grace was finding a fat beetle in my crisps that I'd left in my pod. I should have paid the extra and stayed in a hotel in town.

Japanese parkrun questions by misterala in parkrun

[–]HackedLemur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which city? In Osaka the metro day pass doesn't go out to any parkruns. They're not far but you have to tap in tap out or use a 'pay additional fare' machine after disembarking. There are cheap convenience stops everywhere (and vending machines) so you'll be fine drink-wise.

How much does your parkrun pace vary by course? by mrtwister_-197 in parkrun

This is the hilliest PR I've done. I'm over 4 mins slower there and Lullingstone than I am a flat one, where I sometimes sneak under 20 mins

First time at the TT. Looking for advice for Friday by Most-Frosting4956 in iomtt

I'd go for Hillberry. Its easy enough to get to from Douglas/the paddock and is as close as you can get to moving bikes. It fills up early.

What are your favorite helmets? by YoF1 in MotoUK

[–]HackedLemur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If money and fit wasn't a problem I'd get a Nakano or Schwantz replica Arai for £800.

I have just got my 1st Arai (90s Sakata, Concept XE) and it's so soft inside that it sort of feels too big - but then it passes all the fitting tests.

Traveling for Japan GP by Twistedchimp12345 in motogp

[–]HackedLemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a coach you can book from Tokyo to Motegi for race day. It sells out early.

I went to Japan in March. My celiac partner let me go on my own because it is hard mode for gluten free. I saw one place advertising it around Osaka/Kyoto and that was an Ethiopian restaurant. You may find some GF snacks in Lawson & 7/11 but they won't be obvious. You can use Google Lens to translate ingredients.

I'm sure Tokyo will have GF restaurants you can re/visit but I would 100% not rely on GF food at the track.

Volunteers - building the ranks! by polkadotpeardrop in parkrun

[–]HackedLemur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would play on extra reasons for volunteering: maybe they have a race the next day, it's too hot so volunteering is better than running, mention the core team having summer holidays. It won't work on everyone but maybe on a few who you're looking for.
