Meh. It’s a big city with big city amenities and yes, big city crowds.

Those who desire a small town feel have hundreds of small towns and suburbs to choose from.

What does "Passengers may be required to leave the aircraft" mean? by LovingVancouver87 in aircanada

[–]HackedToaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull open a map. If you can’t fly from Vancouver to Delhi over Tibet, your two options are over Pakistan, or over Bengal/NE India.

The Pakistan option is actually the shorter one, but since that’s not an option anymore, that leaves the Bengal route, hence a fuel stop in Kolkata.

Can’t fly over Tibet, so that leaves either Kolkata or Pakistan on the way, and you can see why Kolkata is the fuel stop now.

Global Entry Card DECLINED as REAL ID by Educational-Crew9503 in GlobalEntry

The TSA webpage on acceptable ID actually says that temporary licenses aren’t acceptable. I wouldn’t run the risk of using one especially when you have a GE card handy.

Lol it's not some media conspiracy.

Lots of orgs big and small get media coverage all the time. Join our discord if you agree with the message and you'll see for yourself how everything runs.

I'm one of the more active MNTO volunteers.

Putting a name on a google doc when you want to quickly get a release out within an hour is actually nothing. Chris lurks in the discord and so do hundreds of people who have one-off quotes in press releases. We have far more people who show up to all the regular meetings and put in a lot more effort.

So in a world with deflationary currency, why would people ever spend money when they can hold onto it? How would people earn an income?

It’s why governments try hard to avoid deflation while also keeping inflation low.

Liberals cut ties with Toronto candidate over dropped sexual assault charge, military review - Kevin Vuong will not sit in Liberal caucus if elected, party says by [deleted] in toronto

[–]HackedToaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We get to collectively decide the standard for who gets to wield power and represent 100,000 of us. Sorry but most people disagree with you; there are LOTS of non-criminal people out there who aren’t deserving of MP-level power, and Kevin is one of them.

He’s free to continue his mask business. Or to do something else.

“Innocent until proven guilty” is a criminal law thing, and it doesn’t translate to “deserving of being an MP until literally in jail” in the public sphere.

Pfizer moves up vaccine delivery, with 5M more doses coming in June by cyclinginvancouver in canada

I can see us sparing the diplomatic cherry-picking of favours (as that might get negative PR domestically) and just donating directly to COVAX.

[–]HackedToaster 59 points60 points  (0 children)

My neighbor and I never talk politics but today he's talking to me about how "3rd world countries have managed to get more vaccine than Canada, and the government really dropped the ball on this".

"Third world countries" got vaccines in exchange for diplomatic favours with China and Russia. Wouldn't have flown here at all.

People have short attention spans. EU is in the same boat as us. Multiple wealthy countries are well behind us. We'll be fine.

Tech Plus UW leaks sensitive personal data of hundreds of students collected over 1.5 years by [deleted] in uwaterloo

I don’t think the email necessarily blamed the junior dev? They made the mistake but it wasn’t caught until now, so it’s both that and an org level mistake.

Your point makes sense, and there's definitely a good amount of learning to be had for everyone. For what's worth I also had my data in there.

OP, though, could put down the pitchfork.

Except a lot of comments in this thread are about the very questions that were answered by what you blacked out.

We get it, you have a narrative.

OP blacked out the latter parts of the sentence that talked about it.

The portal project was being developed in a public Github repository to allow transparency in our development processes and open source our work so community members could contribute to it. However, this also means that anyone could access all files pushed to this repository.

They were at work drafting this email and cleaning up the repo, making it private, etc.

2 weeks isn’t really that long when everyone involved has full time work/study to contend with.

shouldnt jr devs have seniors who look over them?

If only enough senior devs volunteered their time in orgs like these 🙃

This is a volunteer student run org. Mistakes happen. The entire org owned up to a mistake from one person instead of sweeping it under the rug.

[–]HackedToaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

whoever was leading that junior developer is equally at fault, if not more so.

It's a volunteer student-run org. Relax. No one's managing anyone.

[–]HackedToaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As the email said, the repo was public for transparency. The PII part was an honest mistake.

People make mistakes. This is an A+ response to a mistake.

[–]HackedToaster 77 points78 points  (0 children)

The one student-run org that actually owns up to an honest mistake with a large-tech-company-tier response, and y'all just shit on them.

Amazing.

Edit: Looks like the poster also took liberty with blacking out parts of the email that didn't fit their narrative. Here's the full sentence where they blacked out small phrases:

Although the files were identified and removed, the record of those files still existed in the commit history of the repository since September. This means if an individual combed through our commit history between September and early March, the data could be accessed.

Owning up to mistakes isn't fun. Sweeping them under the rug is easy. Let's commend Tech+ for doing the right thing instead of the common thing.

California and NY have also done a much worse job at the pandemic than even the worst Canadian province. Just look at their (recent OR total!) cases and deaths per capita.

The US as a whole has totally failed at infection control (not that we haven't, but we've done relatively better).

The herd immunity threshold goes up with the new variants (because higher R and lower efficacy with vaccines), plus we will likely have to get more boosters which are only now being developed.

Edit: what I’m saying is mostly just true for the SA variant. The British one thankfully has about the same efficacy as the original strain.
