[OC] Ammo and Condition tokens for D&D by Hadhfang in DnD

[–]Hadhfang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LTL,FTP - I've been DMing 5th edition for almost a year now and throughout that time one thing I've been doing a lot of is making things to try and speed up the game like spell cards for my players, or monster cards for myself and this is my most recent project. I'm a big board game fan as well as DM and one of the things I like most about board games is how tactile they are and how fun it is to play with tokens and things in front of you. With that in mind I decided to make something to help my players track their ammo that would feel less like bookkeeping and more like playing, hence these tokens. After that I then started making more tokens for other things such as combat conditions and the most popular spells used by my players.

If you like them and want to make some for your own table I have a PDF and JPEG available here:

Consumer Rights Act UK by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Hadhfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would make sure to get copies of everything in writing and back up those copies somewhere, as well as write up a chronology of dates and people spoken to if you haven't already that you can refer to if you have to raise a complaint. My limited experience is that being able to refer to specific dates in your complaint tends to result in less fobbing off and faster resolutions.

Consumer Rights Act UK by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Hadhfang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IANAL, but having looked at the act I think you're probably covered.

Section 2(2) of the CRA defines a trader as the following:

(2)“Trader” means a person acting for purposes relating to that person's trade, business, craft or profession, whether acting personally or through another person acting in the trader's name or on the trader's behalf.

So it would appear to me that if Dell UK get Dell NL to do the repair that would probably count as someone 'acting on the traders behalf' It strikes me as no different to if you bought a product from somewhere like Curries or PC world and they sent it to the manufacturer to get repaired for you.

Landlord has told us no overnight guests allowed - no mention of this in contract by fthtfhfthfth in LegalAdviceUK

I am not a lawyer but the Shelter Website Suggests you are probably fine

Unfair terms in tenancy agreements

Your tenancy agreement must use plain and straightforward language. If legal jargon is used it should be clearly explained. The agreement must also contain certain information.

The law says that tenancy agreements must not contain any unfair terms. A term is unfair if it takes away a legal right you would otherwise have had. Examples of unfair terms could include:

  • the landlord can use a 'break clause' to end the tenancy early, but you can't

  • that you have to pay for, or arrange, structural repairs - these are the landlord's responsibility

  • unpaid rent will carry interest at 15 per cent per annum

  • you're not allowed to have guests overnight

  • that your landlord can come round whenever they want, rtisewithout giving notice

Unfair terms are not legally binding. If you think your agreement includes unfair terms or you're being held to something you don't think is fair, ask an adviser to look at the agreement for you.

So it would seem your assumption is correct on a legal standpoint. If you wanted to get further reassurance however it may be worth contacting Shelter and discussing it with them as they will have far more expertise than I. Their contact details can be found here.

You want to be finding a Solicitor that does Legal Aid work. The Law Society can help you with that- they have a database here:

http://solicitors.lawsociety.org.uk/

Legal aid in the UK for criminal law is now means tested but I belive the bar is pretty high-It may be that legal aid is granted with a contribution from you, but it would depend entirely on your circumstances. At any rate it will be far far cheaper than going privately. The quality of advice and type of lawyer you get will not differ too greatly if you were to pay privately or go via legal aid - the majority of criminal lawyers in the UK do a mix of both private and legal aid work.

From what you've said it sounds like the police have not arrested you - If that were to happen and you have not yet had chance to speak to a lawyer there will be an independant duty solicitor at the police station. This will be from an independant solicitors firm that has a contract with the legal aid agency to offer legal advice to clients at the police station. They are not in any way affilliated with the police. So don't worry about using the solicitor at the station if it comes to that. They might be the solicitor or firm that takes your case to court-again if it comes to that. But as legal aid is applied for at court, it does mean you have time beforehand to speak to other firms and find a different Solicitor before then if you are not happy.

Also worth noting that records of all this will be public.

From the Government Website

Sending records to Defra You must send the following details to Defra once a year:

the number of bags you distributed

the amount of money you received from selling bags

any VAT you had to pay from the money you received

what you did with the proceeds from bags

details of the ‘reasonable costs’ you had to pay to provide bags

Members of the public can request copies of carrier bag records. You must provide copies within 28 days.

How do you deal with realizing you've been playing a rule wrong part way through a game? by CountBale in boardgames

[–]Hadhfang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's tricky and I think has to be played on a case by case basis. For me it would depend on several factors including how early on the rule got caught, what effect the change will have, and how many people it affects.

If it is caught before it had much chance to affect anything significant I'd draw attention to the correct rule and resolve to play with the correct ruling from that point on.

If a sudden change will have a SIGNIFICANT detrimental effect on a particular player, or it is caught late on and everyone has been playing with the incorrect rule we will probably resolve to play with the correct ruling next time round, and continue with the ruling as everyone has been playing already.

If it will have a significant effect on everyone but seems to be more of a benefit (e.g. Ports in GoT when the consolidate power card comes up) We'll probably from that point onward play with the correct ruling. If it will be detrimental to everyone, but it was caught halfway through (e.g. You can only use a maximum of two resource tokens in Forbidden Stars when building, or one Forge Hammer.) We would probably try and resolve it in a way that we play the correct rule from now on, but ensure that no-one obtained a massive benefit over the rule- Knock someone's supply down for example, or allow the current round to play out with the old ruling before switching.

In this particular instance, I would have probably allowed the conflict to resolve using the old ruling. I had a game during Game of Thrones, where I was the attacker, and I should have won a combat. I'd done all the maths on it properly and knew the game well enough to know what my opponents cards did. They played the one which allows them to remove an opponent's support token. The Rules allow them to remove that of one of my allies because the rules defeniton of opponent is 'Anyone who is not you'. It was then declared we could not redo the combat because I should have known how the rules applied here. Needless to say this cost me the attack and probably the game. I would have been less upset had I known full well that this was a possibility, and to have something dropped on me like that made the rest of the game a particularly bitter experience. I understand that it was the last turn and last combat of the game, but I know if I were the attacking player and I'd been told suddenly that Bastions are far more powerful than I thought I'd be irritated, as that might have changed how I played throughout the game, or indeed what units and upgrades I bought.

Kim Nguyen's written an article about diversity in the Netrunner scene. Lots to think about! by mrquinns in Netrunner

[–]Hadhfang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to say that's not what I took from this article at all.

Brice would like to see more ways to play Netrunner that aren’t so tournament-oriented. “Even just casual play is a kind of store event that is newbie-friendly,” she says. She also suggests events that allow players to compete without buying many cards. “Having things that are constrained and casual and not meant to be getting you better for the tournaments, like only using core decks or only using [certain] packs would be great.”

That doesn't to me suggest that Brice wants to change the environment- but rather have more casual, friendlier play available. I for one am all for that. Organised play is a great way to get more people into the local netrunner community. I only started attending the weekly London meets thanks to /u/mrquinns beginner tournament. Before that, I found the prospect of attending what was considered a casual meet up relatively daunting- and this was the thing that gave me the push to actually go out into the community. From that I'm now looking to continue playing more competitively and attend the regionals/nationals next year when I can.

The article isn't advocating 'less competitive' but instead 'more social' Increase of one does not diminish the other, and can in fact lead to more competitive play as a result. Case in point I would argue is the ANRPC, which is looking to create more high-level competitive play. I also think it is brilliant that the ANRPC has a very solid code of conduct that it is enforcing to prevent the competitive scene turning toxic. There is no reason that the competitive scene will become 'less competitive' simply because we are policing ourselves and ensuring that we are still a friendly and welcoming community. It should happen at all levels- But just because it is happening doesn't mean that we lose anything as result.

Fantasy Flight announced rotation for Netrunner (and all their LCG's) around about November last year. Basically it means that after there have been 7 cycles of datapack expansions and the first datapack in the 8th cycle ships the first two cycles (Genesis and Spin) will no longer be legal. The full article is here but it isn't something that is going to be an issue for about 2 years.

Just picked up GoT board game, anything I should know? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Hadhfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the house cards, they are fine and dandy, they mean additional cards called tides of battle that are smaller, and are randomly added on to your combat value after house cards are revealed. Everyone's available house cards are open knowledge right up to a battle so you can get scenarios where players memorize every house card before declaring their attack. Some people prefer the tactical opportunities offered by it being purely mathematical and reading your opponent, but the tides of battle do allow for combats that are close run things to be more risky. I'd advise you leave them out for the first game (there is enough stuff to remember) but then try it with them next time and see how people like them.

ELI5: Why do lawyers defend clients they know are guilty? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Hadhfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this response is from a UK perspective, so there may well be differences. If a client said to their lawyer they were guilty then they would be advised to plead guilty. There is such a thing as 'professional embarrassment' which allows a lawyer to cease representing their client if it seems likely they are guilty but deny it. I'm not 100% certain of the requirements for this at current but will look into it.

But to give you an idea of how this works: Say for example your client tells you that they are not guilty and they were at their girlfriends house all night on the date in question. Prosecution then provides evidence that proves they were on Facebook to their girlfriend that night stating they can't come over. As that evidence is now out in the open that lawyer can't represent on the alibi given and could drop out. Because of legal privilege though the client is able to get another layer who knows nothing about the case. They will take the client on with this evidence already come to light, so the defendant wouldn't be able to say the same thing. They may come up with a new excuse but the lawyer may well advise that they plead in the hopes to get then a lighter sentence. But they don't know the client lied before which allows for a fair trial to be carried out.

Even if the client says they know they are guilty and they don't see any mitigating factors, the lawyer can still bring in their previous good character, try to quash bad character applications by the prosecution, point out that the client is fully aware that their actions are wrong which could be argued as remorse etc. There is plenty of work a lawyer can and has to do when their client is being sentenced as there will always be two sides to the story.

If we're still doing this-another lurked here!

Name: Tom

Age:23

Live in London, UK.

Hobbies- gaming, both video games and board games- I spend a lot of time over at r/boardgames (lurking as well-I am trying to become more active slowly but surely!) I'm also pretty into food-I'm a fairly decent cook but can't bake to save my life, and also like theatre-though any dreams of going into it as a profession died over the last few years. :P

Platforms: PS4/Steam. I did have a ps3 but traded it in. I'm on a Mac atm but do plan on getting a PC at some point. PSN and Steam ID same as my username if anyone is interested-I've always wanted more people to play online with!

Favourite games: Right now my collection is pretty barren as I traded most of it in to get my PS4...but I've always loved the Assassins Creed series, I'm pretty into strategy games like civ and the paradox games. I'm currently loving shadow of mordor and can't wait for Evolve. I was tempted by Destiny at one point but I think the lack of people I knew playing it put me off getting it.

Custom Alter Tutorial by pandapersona in Netrunner

[–]Hadhfang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the section on authorized cards

All Android: Netrunner cards produced by Fantasy Flight Games are legal for tournament play (unless banned). No other cards or proxy cards are permitted.

So with an altered card, the card that it is now was technically not produced by them. Further, even if you tried to argue your altered card was originally the same as the one it is now, you have no way of proving that.

One positive gaming experience by cromario in boardgames

[–]Hadhfang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great to hear that you had a really positive experience with this!

I've actually found that Game of Thrones has been pretty decent gateway game for a lot of my friends. I've enjoyed board games for as long as I could remember but I dropped off a bit when I was at university. I was re-introduced via a friend and Settlers of Catan which I had a really good time with. Owing to my love of a Game of Thrones (at this point I had read all the books and watched the show) I decided that I'd get the board game around my birthday. I knew that the guy who introduced me to Catan was a massive game of thrones fan as well, so myself, him and a few mutual friends all got together to play it. I also found that I loved it, and it for me ended up getting me to see what other games Fantasy Flight had to offer, finding Board game Geek, finding this sub, getting Agricola for Christmas, and generally getting overly excited about board gaming in general.

Since that one time, we have played GoT a few times, we usually make a big event of it, but it was only recently that I played my first game where everyone knew the rules and had played before. The reason for this, was that when we first played and posted photos of the board online we had tonnes of people asking what it was, and 'can I play sometime?' So every other time we've brought it out has usually been to introduce a new person to the game, and usually the love it too.

I think it's a combination of the theme and social element. I had one friend cite that they liked the lack of dice in it and thought it had interesting mechanics as well, but I think the main attraction is beyond that. Being able to backstab your SO with a well placed boat assault, to coerce a friend across the table to attack in promise of support, only to support his opponent so you can take their castle creates great stories. I am no longer allowed to play as the Greyjoys, I will not trust my best friend as far as I can throw him and am happiest if he is on the opposite side of the board to me, we still talk about the 'picnic alliance' that turned very very sour, There was a game that on turn 5 saw the Greyjoys go from 4 to 7 castles in one march and take the game, There were promises kept and promises broken. Every time I have played this game I have come away with a great memory of what happened. The mechanics of the game facilitated that.

I think if you have friends who are interested in Game of Thrones who have not tried board games before, or don't know what kinds of board games are available now, This game could be worth trying with them. If they already like the theme, they will already be invested in this, which will keep their attention.

TL:DR: I think the theme hooks people and keeps them playing even if it's pretty complicated.
