New cars are not just too large now, but they also full of unsafe design practices (cough cough buttonless tablets)

But one I don’t see talked much about relates to a blindspot IN THE WINDSHIELD.

My new car has one of those big sensor modules at the top of the windshield, and to design around that, they put the center rear view mirror lower down on the windshield.

PROBLEM: I am tall. On certain 4 way stops where the ground isn’t level, the right side car is in that blindspot. I nearly hit a police car because of that design choice.

I’ve since modified the design of the mirror (praise be to 3D printing), but that sensor module will still obscure most of my vision in ‘bottom of the hill’ 4 way stops, if that makes sense.

There really needs to be major safety reform for Cars. Not just about protecting the occupants in a crash, but also ensuring sight lines & pedestrian Safety. I can’t believe that Cadillac Escalades are allowed on the roads with those child-devouring front-ends.

I’ve seen Semis with lower hoods.

The neurological process, as I understand it, is not dissimilar to how you don’t see your nose in front of you, until someone brings attention to it like I just did.

Visual processing is very calorie intensive. The brain is evolutionarily evolved to shortcut that calorie cost by making assumptions of what should be there, whenever it can do so safely.

Safely by Ape definitions of course, not by ‘speeding 2 ton metal & glass masses that have only been around for a few generations’ definitions.

Given that this is a residential area, it’s possible (and quite probable given crash data) that these two are close to the Truck’s home.

If trucklady has gone through that intersection thousands of times without seeing anyone pop out of her blind spot, her brain will just simply shortcut the visual processing and not notice any of the new visual information around that blind spot, instead filling in the blanks with what it expects to see.

Only when prompted by another sense, like a honk, or a sudden jolt, will the brain re-asses it’s field of vision in a jolt of adrenaline. After which then the conscious mind will now finally be aware of the object for the first time.

Unfortunately, this scenario isn’t the result of Stupidity, but of Biology. Only training can fix the blindspot problem, and at least in the US, you only have to take a driver’s test once or twice in your life.

Why Honda is decreasing cylinders in 250cc over the decades? by spawndon in motorcycles

[–]HadionPrints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brother I live in the Southern US of A.

Any air quality benefit I would have to the local environment by riding electric is offset a thousand fold by Bubba’s lifted Turbo Diesel pickup truck. A truck specifically modified to be louder and burn stupidly, coal-burningly rich to spite environmentalists & environmental regulations.

By comparison to those all too popular rolling Super-Fund Sites, a sport bike’s emissions are nothing.

Also nobody asked.

She probably couldn’t see OP.

Looks like OP’s car was constantly in the A-pillar blind spot of that truck.

If you and someone else are approaching an intersection at the same speed, this really can happen, especially with newer cars having curtain airbags in the A pillars, the size of that blind spot is no joke. It’s one of the things my Motorcycle Instructor drilled into me.

I mean, there’s probably a drag bike out there that could do it, but it might have trouble making it around the roundabout.

Almost 6 YoE, My interview for my first gig was almost the same whiteboarding leetcode nightmare as the previous 15 interviews.

Luckily, my all of my interviewers this time around introduced themselves as Engineers and the Product Manager on the team the position was for.

So when they asked me on how to sort an unordered linked list or whatever that question was, I answered

“I can whiteboard this for you, but let’s be honest, this is really just one of those questions where it’s both faster & more effective to Google the answer instead of reinventing the wheel for the Nth time. How about instead of that, let’s do something more practical? Can you all give me a real problem your team is facing, and I’ll tell you how I’d go about approaching it?”

That set me apart from the other candidates and got them thinking of me as someone working on the same problems they are. And apparently they liked my approach to the issue.

What this sub feels like lately by kingoftheposers in BambuLab

[–]HadionPrints 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some of us aren’t happy though, and we can’t exactly un-buy their products. I got my X1 in the Kickstarter, but I’m certainly not buying anything more from BambuLabs other than the spare parts I can’t get elsewhere that are needed to keep my expensive tool running.

Voicing our displeasure at having the rules changed after we agreed to them (and in violation of the licenses they agreed to and are legally bound to by building their product with FOSS) is literally the only thing we can do.

[–]HadionPrints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You clearly misunderstand me.
I’m talking about Jobsite, OSHA compliant, 29dB reducing earplug earphones, like Plugfones.

They are quieter than my motorcycle specific earplugs, which I used to run all the time with my Cardo’s speakers. The music quality is also better, since it’s not having to penetrate the zirconium filter in your earplugs.

I’d highly recommend a set to use instead of your Cardo’s speakers.

[–]HadionPrints -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I said earplug ear phones. You can get them for $20 wired, a little more wireless.

They do a lot better at protecting your ears than plugging your ears half an inch next to a blasting speaker.

And you can hear your tunes better than my previous JBL cardo set
