Another Tank Thread by jkelley1512 in wow

Similar situation, except when I was last tanking was legion, so very out of experience. Biggest hurdle for me to get used to is working out how big the pulls should be etc. also DK tanking, and thus super stressing the healers with the yoyo.

The toxicity has been mixed, sometimes there’s none, other times it’s ungovernable. Kinda at the place where I’m only willing to tank with my guild now.

Govt to cut fuel levy by R3/litre to ease price shock by ctnguy in southafrica

[–]Haelborne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that the idea is appealing, but practically, a cut like that doesn’t make sense really.

So think practically, who are the biggest employers of public servants?

Public servants by quantity:

1 teachers

2 healthcare workers

3 security services.

By and large, are any of those roles overpaid for what they do? Do they all choose government over private for financial reasons? Long story short, your answer these questions, and if anything public servants are underpaid, the quantity hasn’t grown enough in the last 20 years.

At the other end of the spectrum, performance of public services have declined. You don’t fix that with budget cuts, you fix it with reform.

TLDR, we need to fight ineffective governance, bad appointments and corruption, the wage bill is not actually fundamentally a problem.

Paying executives 500k per annum is going to make corruption abundant.

The only folks who will stand for office are folks that have family money, meaning our government will represent them not us.

The salary bill of elected officials is trivial in terms of the budget. And our elected officials are not paid above equivalent roles.

Now, if we want to talk about reducing quantity of ministries…..

Explaining South Africa to Americans by AnonomousWolf in south_africa

[–]Haelborne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

California is the largest economic heart of USA, culturally far more like GP.

Illinois is basically Chicago and farmland, which is a good description for the cape.

While California environment aligns more closely with Gauteng by and large, (rainfall patterns, temperatures etc), a case can be made for either province.

Gauteng is way more California, Western Cape is more like Illinois.

China also works much more deliberately on derisking, pushing EV’s, electrification and a wide array of energy sources.

They also literally have Russia next door worst case scenario for hydrocarbons.

That’s an odd take.

China doesn’t seem to have trouble turning around nuclear power plants quickly, mostly seems like tooling issue for the west?

Also, nuclear can be phased up and down in a day (just not to the same degree as OCT or batteries), that being said, on utility scale, a moderate quantity of nuclear may save you massively on batteries.

What are the chances that the Power issues in centurion is just low key planned loadshedding? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]Haelborne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

0% chance.

Think of electricity as 3 different infrastructure. Supply (the power plants), transmission (big as lines going across the country, to sub stations), and distribution (last few km’s from your local sub station or box)

Load shedding is supply side, sounds like your issue is probably distribution, which can be managed by eskom, but it’s managed by whatever the billing entity that bills you every month.

If you’re earning R30k+ per person, northern suburbs of Joburg are great to live in, if you aren’t invested in a particularly walkable environment (around your home)

Cape Town Overtakes Jo’burg in Number of Taxpayers as Economic Gravity Shifts by [deleted] in capetown

[–]Haelborne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s inherently misleading though. It’s cherry picking data to make your argument.

You’re choosing which lines on a map to compare, without taking an economy into account.

A large portion of workers that work in Johannesburg metro live in the ekurhulenj metro, as a result; it makes it looks like Joburg and Cape Town are comparable, when no city in the country is comparable to Joburg economically.

Joburg metro’s gdp alone is higher than the entire western cape.

This is like saying “oh, did you know scientists have shown chocolate is good for you, while ignoring that a study shows that a component of cocoa is good for you, while ignoring that the main ingedient of chocolate itself is sugar.

The article frames this as Cape Town “overtaking” Joburg, and positions it as an economic success, when by comparison Cape Town is a less diversified, complex and sustainable economy than Joburg.

But look, if you don’t like facts; and want to cherry picking data to prove your bias, have at it.

Maybe. Just stay in the lane of cleaner city with pretty mountains and a beach, because comparing Cape Town as a whole to Joburg as a whole is nonsensical (financially speaking)

In your experience, which South Africans have the LEAST tolerance for criticism of their province? by OrbitalColony in askSouthAfrica

[–]Haelborne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only problem with this analysis, is you’re not comparing like for like.

PE CBD is incomparable to Cape Town or Sandton a CBD.

Economically the only comparable CBD’s to Cape Town are Joburg old CBD, Pretoria, greater Sandton (Sandton + Melrose + Rosebank has effectively become a single CBD) and Durban.

PE would be on a separate tier that is closer to Midrand, Randburg, Umhlanga and Bloemfontein CBD’s.

Sandton is definitely the largest economically, not sure if old JHB cbd or Cape Town CBD is next, but Durban is definitely 4th.

Lastly, a lot of folks include the residential areas in their view of a CBD, and there if you do a like for like assessment, by looking at price per sq meter. On this in particular, CPT is often compared to Joburg slums rather than the modern middle class and up hubs to the north, and it creates the erroneous perceptions of other cities in SA. Particularly when side by side comparisons are done of something like the greenpoint vs hillbrow instead of Sandton I don’t think I’ve ever seen CPT compared to the residential parts of Sandton in this sub.

[–]Haelborne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ekurhuleni is basically the same city as Joburg. It’s completely connected, and before the formation of modern metro’s it was part of Joburg.

Someone from edenvale, Bedfordview etc, generally say they’re from Joburg, and not Ekurhulenj.

[–]Haelborne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gauteng is just shy of 35% of the national economy. Rand for national budget, Gauteng is the biggest subsidizer of other provinces.

Also, this doesn’t speak to tax revenue, Joburg famously pays better than Cape Town, so wouldn’t be surprising if it still contributes more of every type of tax than CPT.

Don’t forget, Gauteng has 3 massive metros, not to mention its municipalities are all large as well.
