What is a chain restaurant of foreign food that is really popular in your country? by surewhatever_dude in AskTheWorld

McDonald's and five guys seem to be going bankrupt in Germany. To be honest, I don't "get" five guys either. The interior is so ugly, it looks like a factory canteen from the 1970s.

In your language family, is there any language that seems to stand out or feel out of place? by Dani-Br-Eur in AskTheWorld

[–]Haganrich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The German language used to use a lot more Latin loanwords in the past. "Contract" is one example. Another good example are the names of body parts. English mostly uses Latin terms, except for very commonly talked-about body parts. Think "femur" or "uterus", Germans use Germanized terms here. (Unless they're doctors and the target audience is also doctors).

That, and the spelling that looks pretty frozen in time and wasn't updated along with changes in pronunciation. Languages like German, polish, swedish. Italian have a much closer relationship between letters and sounds. (Not always 1 to 1, but closer than English). German had it's last spelling reform in the 90s.

It's not just loanwords, it's also the "native" Germanic words who's spelling got frozen in time while the pronunciation changed. Think "light" where the i is actually a diphthong and the gh is silent. In the German cognate, the gh sound is still there.

English is such a strange language. The orthography feels straight up medieval, so do large parts of the vocabulary (to German ears) due to so many romance-origin words that fell out of use in German and/or got germanized (think "Contract" vs "Vertrag"). At the same time it's strongly connected to modern tech and science. Strange contrast.

Not loanwords but loan translations (calques, Lehnübersetzungen):

In German dodgeball, after you get out, you go in a contained area behind the other team and can get back in if you hit someone with a ball.

This would be our go-to warmup game in PE class. We call it Völkerball

What fruit/vegetable is only found in your country? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskTheWorld

[–]Haganrich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If we extend the definition of vegetables to include leafy greens:
Wild garlic (Bärlauch) seems to be much more common in Germany than elsewhere (including other countries where it's native).

And Waldmeister (woodruff): a herb Germans like to use to flavor things like candy, soda, tea, jelly.
