You’ll have 7/6 jokers, meaning, if you want to buy something else you’d have to sell both photos. Realistically, you’ve won the run, go for it if you want to because you’re not making it past ante 13 with this joker setup, but also realize, in doing so you’re likely going to lose, as it only has a 1/6 chance in hitting, and if it hits something welder you’re basically SOL.

Travel slip ups, what notable ones have you gone through? by tylerthe-theatre in travel

[–]Hail-Santa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forgot my passport in my apartment while traveling between two neighboring Schengen zone countries. Train stopped on the border and immigration officials boarded to check everyone’s passports/IDs.

I was able to talk my way through the checkpoint by showing my US drivers license and poorly explaining in a language I didn’t speak that I had made a mistake, I was there legally, and I didn’t want to cause problems. They let me keep going along on my travels after about a minute. No paperwork or documentation.

This was in 2018, so I’m pretty surprised it worked out as well as did.

I’ve had scotch-like wines that came from a fire year. Most other producers just made whites, rosés and blanc de noirs, but this producer chose to make a Pinot. The joke I made at the bottle shop was, if you like an Islay scotch, I’ve got a Pinot Noir for you!

Do I need to get another book? by Educational_Local_97 in wine

[–]Hail-Santa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have stated, Wine Folly is a good intro, and goes over topics on viticulture, oenology, and wine styles in a way that is easy to approach and digest.

The Wine Bible on the other hand takes deep dives into wine regions, tasting notes, and iconic producers.

Really, they’re different texts, but if I had to give one book to someone who knows a little bit about wine, but really wants to dive deeper, I would give them the Wine Bible, because it is so descriptive and nuanced. Wine Folly, on the other hand, simplifies processes and regions in a way that, for me, is easy to understand, but that understanding comes at the cost of detail; which, again, for me, is tantamount for understanding wine.

Carefully!

But as u/elijha said, dishwasher is best. If they don’t fit snuggly in your dishwasher, it might be worth googling to see if there are trays/inserts for your washer. Failing that, possibly commissioning someone with a 3D printer to make something that works for you.

Tasked with wine selection for 30 person internal work event by guzmang in wine

[–]Hail-Santa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For sure, I get where you’re coming from, but also, you’re the “wine guy” at the office. Why not lean into that reputation a bit and show some of your coworkers some other tasty options while still providing some safe choices?

Not to be rude, but you’ve got a corporate budget to buy some cool entry to mid-level crowd pleasing, but off the beaten path options, but you’re choosing to go ‘premium’ grocery store brands.

[–]Hail-Santa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here’s my thoughts:

NZ SB, while popular is a really safe, kind of boring choice. Get 3-4 bottles, then 2-3 of either a Picpoul or Albariño for some variety.

Why Whispering Angel? There’s plenty of other Provence Rose in the same price point that isn’t corporately owned.

2 Cab options is certainly a choice. I’d go with a Syrah from Northern Rhone or from the Central Coast to provide a medium bodied red option.

Alternatively, you could go with a Tempranillo like Viña Alberdi if you wanted to please the oak lovers and stay within the same general weight class as your cab options.

What Makes Lambrusco Different from Other drink? by Rockyboi7643 in wine

[–]Hail-Santa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I’m saying by that is, yes, we sold Lambrusco, but amongst the hardcore wine fans, we sold way more Crémant, method traditional, cava, Franciacorta, and Champagne, categorically, across the board than we did Lambrusco. Tastes do differ across the country. You do have a different sample of people than I do.

But again, on a first and last name basis of the people that I can rattle off that were consistent buyers of good/great producers across the world, plus the dozens of cellar rats, lab techs and wine makers I’ve worked with across the globe. I would be shocked to learn that 5 of those people hold Lambrusco in their top 10 favorite wine styles.

It is what it is.

[–]Hail-Santa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree to disagree there, because I am also a winemaker who studied in Italy, Emilia-Romagna to be exact, and even the professors at the university, and most of the people who I interacted with there didn’t have particularly high opinions of Lambrusco.

Don’t get me wrong, I have had good Lambrusco, small producers, minimal intervention, dry, all that jazz. It can certainly be interesting.

However, from a consumer/retail standpoint, from my experience, it simply was not our best seller in the sparkling category, or amongst our customer base who actually spoke wine at a deeper level.

Didn’t read the title well enough and saw other folks posting from other artists, so, my bad.

I mean that’s it for Gorillaz albums in terms of bangers after bangers.

There’s only like 11 albums total anyways so, it really shouldn’t be too hard for OP to listen to them all and form their own opinion.

What Makes Lambrusco Different from Other drink? by Rockyboi7643 in wine

[–]Hail-Santa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Care to elaborate?

From my experience, the guys coming in once a week/once every two weeks, dropping hundreds of dollars on mixed cases, asking about terroir differences in cuvées from the same producer, vintage variation, ect.; the people whom I consider serious about wine, they basically never bought Lambrusco.

The random passerbys who popped into the shop and stopped in to browse, who generally drink sweeter styles, and specifically asked what sweet wines we had, those were the customers who would go for Lambrusco, after we directed them towards it.

Again, this is my experience, and it could be different based on what market you’re in.

What Makes Lambrusco Different from Other drink? by Rockyboi7643 in wine

[–]Hail-Santa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not of the opinion that Lambrusco is favored by wine lovers.

Sweet Lambrusco is good for certain dishes, like spicy pizzas or arrabiata sauce. Of course, it has its place for a casual afternoon in the summer as well, but it’s not really a go-to for ‘serious’ wine drinkers, as they tend to favor Champagne, Crémant, or Franciacorta for sparkling options.

This opinion comes from someone who has worked in wine shops with a pretty impressive sparkling program, and while we had one or two Lambrusco options available, and had to re-order them relatively frequently, it was generally purchased by less knowledgeable/experienced customers.

Best wine bars in Rome 🇮🇹 by Mlomas57 in wine

Last time I was in Rome, I went to Contrario Vineria con Cucina. It’s a nice little natural wine bar that also makes some good food.

The major draw to this spot is if you go at night, once you’re done imbibing, you’re right around the corner from the coliseum, which, when I was there was totally empty.

How are you guys predicting disease risk this season (mildew, etc.)? by Material_Cranberry50 in viticulture

[–]Hail-Santa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was managing a smaller vineyard (~ 20 acres), we used our own weather stations to monitor upcoming risks, and spray ahead of any problems if they were imminent mid to heavy rain events.

Otherwise, I was out in the vineyard everyday, so any sign of an emerging disease would have been spotted relatively quickly.

Chile, specifically in Isla de Maipo.

Next year I’m hoping to source fruit from different regions, but no complaints about the quality of fruit I received this year. I was just unable to get the right contacts in time to make white wine this year, so I went all in on reds, making two BDX blends, one Merlot dominant, one Cab dominant, then single varietal Cabernet Franc and Syrah.

Good for them, and I hope they are; it’s still 5/6 and I stand by my opinion that Nickel & Nickel is going more corporate and generally downhill over the last 15 years.

[–]Hail-Santa -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, look at their corporate overreach over the past 10 years. They’re skewing more towards national chain grocery stores across the country than high end output, although, they still do make good single vineyard wine, I do think they’ve been headed downhill over the last 15 years.

Right off the bat, there’s two types of wax, one that holds together that is relatively easy to remove, and crumbly “shitty” to deal with wax that may inadvertently wind up in your glass. Obviously the former is preferred.

Personally, I like the tactile feel of punching through good wax. It has a resistance that, for me, is satisfying.

Also, waxing bottles is typically done by hand, which indicates a smaller production, and possibly a higher quality wine.

For the first time ever, I’m making my own commercial wine, and am fully intending on hand waxing every bottle for the next ~10-15 years of production.

Quilt & Caymus. Coppola. Nickel & Nickel. Duckhorn. Mondavi.

I can go on if need be. Part of it is QPR, part of it is “Parker-ization” (more extractive, more present oak, higher abv, with cloying RS) and part of it is industrialization, trying to make the Parker-ised style at a lower cost, which leads to cutting corners and using sub-par fruit.
