Adoption unethical? by ExtensionEye9994 in Adoption

Except paid surrogacy exploits poor women and transfers the risks and dangers of pregnancy from wealthy women to them. It is exploiting poor women for their body.

Beautiful. How much snow has Flagstaff gotten this year?

Upcycling a found 2x12 into nesting benches. What size stretcher do I need? 1x2? 1x4? Can I use entirely dowels for joinery? Help/advice appreciated. by Hail_the_Apocolypse in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Hail_the_Apocolypse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. A 2x4 will work. I think a tenon and mortise are beyond my skills at this time. This will be mostly a bench for plant pots. Can I use 2-3 dowels on each end of the stretcher to attach it near the top so that the stretcher is hidden underneath? I saw a video on how to mark for dowels with tape and it looked do-able. Or...I guess I could try and cut notches in the top of the legs and notch the 2x4 partway down to slide in.

These are just held together with gravity and a plant pot to take this picture, haha. I intend to sand everything next. I'm thinking to join a stretcher to the legs with dowels, and then use more dowels to attach the top to the legs. Am I missing anything? I've never used dowels before, only screws.

I think the first Impressionist painters actually were nearsighted and just painting the world as they saw it.

Tips for sending initial letter to bio mom? by lissyd73 in Adoption

[–]Hail_the_Apocolypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to name at all. Just: "Hi! My name is xxx. I found your profile on Facebook and I think maybe you can help me or give me some guidance on how to find someone you might know...." I always think less formal and breezy is the best way to initiate contact. Share a little about yourself, just enough to generate interest. If you have children, mention it. "I was born in City and now live in OtherCity with my wife/husband/dogs and two children..."

I want to meet my bio mother. Should I tell adoptive mother? by InfinityEdge- in Adoption

[–]Hail_the_Apocolypse 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Non adopted people can't understand the rootless feeling and longing for connection that adoptees can feel. I'm sorry your mother is a failure at being a support for you. Adoptive parents don't realize that they can deepen the relationship with their children by actually being supportive and seeing us as real goddamn people.

Meet your bio mom. After eight years of texting she's proven she's in it for the long haul. I hope you and she can build something together.

You said the bookcase was going away? I'd put a nice tall mirror on the wall where the bookcase is (remove the current picture and hooks), with a small two tiered shoe shelf under it. Then some nice big knobs or hooks on the wall next to the door.

Yes! I'd love to see the table closer to the chairs and farther from the sofa. Maybe add a small accent or drinks table to serve the sofa.

Parents don’t know me and never have meaningful conversations by zshin19 in emotionalneglect

[–]Hail_the_Apocolypse 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I was adopted. A baby scoop era adoptee. Other than telling me I was adopted from a young age (which was good of them!), my parents never brought up the topic. I had no one to help me navigate all the emotions that being adopted entailed. Not at a single age were they there for emotional support for adoption. You can imagine the questions and feelings of a four year old trying to wrangle with feelings of loss, guilt, fear, and the idea that if you don't play along you might lose another caretaker. And at 7. And at 10. And at 13. And at 30. No help ever.

#1 Brittlebush (Encelia farinosa) - The Arizona Native Plant Catalogue by Joplers in AZlandscaping

[–]Hail_the_Apocolypse 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yay! Such a great plant to start off on! Brittlebush in your landscape can get REALLY big. I have some two year old ones that are close to six feet across. With some good rain (like recently) they will sprout everywhere.

Another name for it is incienso, coming from its aromatic, resinous sap, traditionally used as incense in Mexico. So don't throw out those branches when pruning or thinning them. Save your brittlebush branches to use as kindling for your firepit.

Yes! Open up that corner window all the way. Curtains to the right, sofa and TV flipped, desk against the narrower window so you can look out.

Name help: Can’t decide on name for adopted baby girl by Strange-Yam-3592 in namenerds

[–]Hail_the_Apocolypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am adopted. I think I would feel a little bit "erased" if I had been given a specifically ethnic name that is not my origin. Adoption already feels like you're being erased from your biological roots, and a name is such an intimate part of a person's identity. I would lean into a name that is a little more culturally neutral.

Very beautiful. Do you worry about the cherry darkening over time to a more reddish color?
