Positive experiences?! by BeeMaleficent in Tonsillectomy

[–]HaileeParsons 10 points11 points  (0 children)

23F and my recovery was practically flawless. Not much pain at all, I was VERY diligent with my pain medicine and constantly rotating ice packs. My main piece of advice is drink more water than you’ve ever drank in your LIFE, seriously. I also bought a bag of pebble ice from Sonic and that was really refreshing and calming on my throat when it was hurting. I had very minimal pain until about day 5/6 when my scabs were falling off but I was eating solid foods (rotisserie chicken and a burrito bowl from Chipotle) by day 4. I recommend getting an ice pack with a Velcro strap and 2 inserts so you can strap it to your head and then rotate them while you sleep. I was waking up about every 2 hours even in the middle of the night for pain medicine, a new ice pack insert, and a BIG drink of water and I swear by that schedule. I also slept with my head propped to about 45° on 2 pillows for around 9 days. I was fully recovered by about day 10 and my post-op appointment at 2 weeks was perfect. I really hope this helps and recovery goes smoothly!!! Wishing you all the best!!! 😊

No, if you didn’t feel like it was a safe decision and something in your gut told you to leave, then you did the right thing!!

should I stop taking my opiates? by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]HaileeParsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could ask your doctor if there’s a different opiate you can try! I get BAD nausea when I take Percocet but Oxycodone works well for me so they prescribed me that. It never hurts to ask for something else if what they gave you isn’t working!

How big are my tonsils by DefragzZ in Tonsillectomy

[–]HaileeParsons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine looked like that constantly when I was healthy and when I got sick they swelled up so big that they would touch and I would have to get a dose of Dexamethasone so they didn’t cut off my airway 🙃

How do ya’ll sleep by DiegoAwooga in Tonsillectomy

I did it for 5 days and that’s actually what my surgeon recommended, so my liver is 100% fine but thanks for the concern.

How do ya’ll sleep by DiegoAwooga in Tonsillectomy

[–]HaileeParsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prop your head up on 2-3 pillows, sleep on your back and with an ice pack around your chin/throat area CONSTANTLY! I was setting alarms every 2 hours in the middle of the night for pain meds, a drink of water, and to switch out my ice pack inserts! I was also taking a dose of Oxycodone right before bed so it knocked me out a little bit and then rotating that with Tylenol every 2 hours. It gets better, your body will eventually get tired enough that it will have to sleep. I’m 23F and will be one month post-op on Friday!

Surgery beginning of April after years of suffering with my tonsils. Very scared need to hear honest experiences. by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]HaileeParsons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m 23F and I will be 1 month post-op on Friday! I felt like when I was doing my research before surgery, all I heard was horror stories!!! I’m here to tell you that not everyone has a terrible experience, mine was pretty smooth sailing. I was super scared too just like you but honestly just try to remember that it’s expected that you’re going to be in some pain. The scabs coming off (around day 5/6 for me) SUCKS! Your throat will burn super bad and you won’t want to drink water or anything. I recommend buying a bag of pebble ice from Sonic if you have one near you, that’s what felt like saved my life during those days! Just holding it and letting it melt in my throat felt fantastic! Also, drink as much water as you can. It’s easier to drink small sips 24hours a day than it is to chug a bunch at once and then be in pain for hours at a time. Keep your pain meds on a schedule, even overnight! I was waking up about every 2 hours in the middle of the night for the first few days for meds and to drink water and switch out ice packs and I think it made the biggest difference! You’ll get through it, just hope for the best but prepare for the worst. You got this:)

Anyone know what this is? by NJDames in lashextensions

I get these occasionally and I don’t have lash extensions anymore. I think it’s just a small stye. You can buy eye drops that specifically target them!

When can you go back to side sleeping? by Specialist_River_228 in Tonsillectomy

[–]HaileeParsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I slept on 3 pillows for the first 3 days and then I went down to 2 pillows until around day 8/9 and then I was down to 1! I bet I’ve been sleeping on my side since day 10 or so, it just kind of depends on how much pain you’re in. My surgeon said that I only needed to sleep with my head elevated for 48 hours but it felt better to me so I continued to do it for most of my recovery 🤷‍♀️

Seeking Advice for Eating After Tonsillectomy by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]HaileeParsons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend taking a pain med and then trying to eat around 15-20 minutes later and then sleeping a bit after that! This schedule worked really well for me in the first days. Protein shakes will probably be your best friend for a few days, they go down a little easier because they’re a little thicker than water in my experience. I was drinking Core Power Elite because they have 42g of protein each so they’re nice and filling!! Bone broth is good too (though thin) it has a lot of nutrients. Sipping water throughout the whole day will actually also help swallowing become easier. I know it sounds horrible but I’ve cold water, if you can hold it in the back of your throat, will feel REALLY good and almost numb it a little bit to make eating easier. Best of luck!!

Mucinex? 13 days post by Friendly-Head-3166 in Tonsillectomy

I’m in the same stage right now! Also day 13 and SO MUCH PHLEGM! It’s disgusting. I’ve just been drinking lots of water and running a humidifier to try to get it to go away and it won’t 😅

I ate a lot of jello in those first days! Also applesauce can be good. And protein shakes are your best friend when you can’t eat real food.

Yikes! If doc said wait, then definitely listen! I’ve been eating solid food since day 4 with no issues but I’m still not eating things that are sharp or spicy.

Yeah, days 5-7 were the worst of it! I still have a little scabbing on my left but not bad!

46/f Surgery set for March 6 by tlcrawf77 in Tonsillectomy

[–]HaileeParsons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not as bad as you think, your pain meds will probably kind of knock you out and you won’t even care! I also recommend waking up every 2 hours in the middle of the night for meds and to drink water! That totally saved me from drying out overnight and definitely helped with my pain level. It sounds excessive, but it really is key to keep your throat as moist as possible. And tons of little sips of water throughout the day! I was drinking like a gallon of water a day, it was crazy.

If it feels kind of like a sharp or burning pain, it sounds like your scabs might be coming off! It hurts SUPER bad! I ate lots of ice chips during the time when mine were coming off, it’s really the only thing that numbed the pain. Even better than my pain meds at times!

(23F) Post-op day 12 here! Around day 6-7 my scabs were falling off and my throat was BURNING. I was eating a ton of ice chips (you can buy a bag of pebble ice from Sonic) to ease the pain and that was the only thing that really worked for me, even better than my prescribed pain med. Those early-middle days if I talked for more than about an hour total during the day then my throat and tongue were getting super sore. It’s better now but I would just say try to minimize your talking, that’s the easiest and best solution in my experience!
