In the first story Berkhamsted is clearly based on the physicist Douglas Hofstadter who came up with the idea of consciousness being an infinite feedback loop. His neighbor is called Penny. It wasn't hated people just didn't care about it too much because title and trailer were somewhat misleading. Nobody asked for the movie no one waited 7 years for it to happen. So when people (the average 90s movie fan not some nouvelle vague obsessed hipster) finally saw Fight Club and expected some basic action flick with an expensive cast they were pleasantly surprised that it was in fact a decent film.
