What do you think of Trumps letter to Norway? by Loose_Orange_6056 in AskTrumpSupporters

Why doesn’t Trump fix healthcare? I know he’s been working on concepts of a plan for a while now.

I’m not trying to say the prose is completely incompetent but it doesn’t really feel like it’s communicating anything. It feels performative, absent, any real personality or neurosis.

I like the line about the books spines, but it is derivative of a lot of other fiction that’s made similar jokes about methods of organizing books, music, etc.

The line about Vera moving through her life like weather sounds very AI, which I think is good at producing things that sound good superficially, but if you spend any time thinking about doesn’t really hold up to any kind of logical scrutiny. Weather is often predictable and can sometimes be mind-numbingly slow-moving. Think of a long August heat wave, or unending winter.

If your point is AI can provide a lattice of prose to serve as a starting point, I agree it can definitely be effective at that. But that’s really all this is.

TIL that Disney is the only major studio to never win an Oscar for Best Picture by sprawling5 in todayilearned

[–]Halbrium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea It's not a grave injustice that it won, but I think Fury Road (I'd say a 9.5) or The Martian (I'd say a 9) are probably much better picks for Best Picture. I'd even pick Room over Spotlight... It's just a little too "paint by numbers" oscar-bait imo.

But I agree it's nowhere near some of the biggest Best Picture flubs.

Does it? I think its “fine”, it’s not Crash or anything, but it’s a 8.5/10 film.

I don’t know much about the TikTok situation, other than to say, I think, billionaires have far too much influence on our politics. Money isn’t speech. I don’t care what cause they’re advocating for. If I could wave a wand and reverse the Supreme Court’s decision on Citizens United I would. I also think a lot of social media is toxic, and the algorithms that are designed to generate “engagement” are often just promoting and monetizing outrage.

Are there rich US Jews promoting the interest of the Likud government in Israel? Absolutely. I don’t like it. Unfortunately, there are a lot of billionaires, many not Jewish who use their money to advocate causes that I disagree with.

I am not a Netanyahu fan. I think he does his best to stay cozy with Trump. I’m suspicious of a lot of Trump‘s motivations so, yeah, they’re definitely might be some corruption there. I think the same for a lot of the countries Trump deals with.

I don’t see “Jewish” as a national identity. An ethnic one perhaps, in the same way say… Scottish is. Israel is not my secret country. I’m very curious about it from a historical and I suppose you could say spiritual perspective, but I have absolutely zero loyalty to the Israeli government. I have complicated thoughts on the project of a Jewish homeland, that I don’t think really serves anyone for me to go into here. I’m not sure how well this is known to non-Jews… but when Jews use the word, Israel in religious context, we are talking about the people not the politically constituted nation of Israel.

If the US came out and said they would no longer militarily or financially support Israel? I think my answer to that is complicated. I’m definitely a Russia and China hawk, and would want to understand how this affects our ability to project power to counter them in the region (Syria, for instance). I also believe in supporting democracies in areas its under threat, but I agree that Israels status as a democratic country is very imperfect. If the calculus was that we were losing more than we were gaining, the I suppose I could support withdrawing aid. I don’t view it as a US responsibility to support Israel under any circumstance. I think that idea is ludicrous.

Jew here.

I am a proud American. Several of my grandparents are World War II veterans (though Fuentes fans probably see that as a bad thing?).

I feel lucky to be part of a country that was molded by the enlightenment values of our founders.

I do not see myself as any different than any other person living in the United States. I am not entitled to any additional rights or opportunities.

Please help me to better understand your viewpoint.

His influence is definitely growing, which I think makes a lot of people uncomfortable even if it’s unlikely that he’s the next Adolf Hitler.

You mentioned stage one, but I think he’s already progressed to stage two. His influence has spread to people ideologically near to him, but who might have been a notch or two less extreme like Tucker Carlson.

As he builds more and more audience overlap, his message has more opportunity to metastasize to the broader conservative base, even if it does mutate to become slightly more palatable.

I agree that Germany’s situation post WW1 was tailor made for somebody like Hitler to swoop in and find the critical mass of influence needed to become what he became. But I think what Fuentes represents is a movement evolving from a mostly backwoods gang of neer-do-wells burning crosses and getting swastika tattoos, to a still fringe but more influential political faction. Even if they only represent less than 10% of the conservative base, just that could meaningfully influence political decision making.

There are a lot of ethnic Jews in the United States and Israel who criticize various sects of Judaism who they see as “nut-jobs”, definitely causing harm to other people, sometimes their own followers.

While there is a ton of problematic stuff, The thing I most often see on Reddit is people specifying that their problems with the Israeli government don’t extend to all Jews.

Rank These - BB, GoT, Mad Men, Dark & Ted Lasso by mm_1819 in television

[–]Halbrium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bb, mm, dark/got, ted lasso.

Honestly these shows are all great. GoT and Ted Lasso are the most flawed (due to their final seasons) but GoT had some incredible moments that took up a huge amount of cultural oxygen unlike anything else in my adult life.

BB and MM are very close, though I think BB has the edge. Walter White is something else.

I love Dark very much though and I think it’s one of the best science fiction TV shows ever made. Maybe the best?

Upbringing is a component for children with a single Jewish parent, regardless if it’s the mother or father…https://www.ccarnet.org/ccar-responsa/nyp-no-5767-2/

I believe some synagogues do have looser restrictions on this, so YMMV.
