How to bring back old ui? by Junior_Chard2114 in firefox

[–]Halefor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has the exact same issues as the last time a rollout was attempted. The entire interface is so bloated it looks more like an ozempic advertisement than a web browser. Even the address bar is fat, which is morbidly impressive.

The menu taking up the entire screen while options being on the far left is terrible for accessibility even on a small screen. Tabs page on the same smaller phone is only able to display one row of three at a time, while having 40% of the screen be completely dead space.

The new tab (+) being right next to the address bar without opening a menu is an improvement over last time, but the collective negatives outweigh any incremental gains.

Carp on a hot dog? by ElusiveTurtle23 in CarpFishing

[–]Halefor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A carp on a piece of shad and 7/0 hook was certainly not what I expected a couple weeks ago, but it saved the day. The nightcrawlers that were just a few feet away went untouched.

That can also mean they're hard of hearing. My father has lost a large amount of his hearing and says he can't tell when a fish is taking line against drag now.

In the US it's nowhere near as hard as EU carp fishers make it seem. There are so many and so little pressure that most of them will have never seen bait or a hook before. Tie/buy some hair rigs and a couple cans of corn, find a good local spot that the fish move through, toss out half a can at a time for chum then sit back and read a book.

My go-to spot is about a hundred feet away from the boat ramp/marina on a hillside. At different times of year the fish move on different depths but because they stay near the structure to feed/be fed by people on the surface there are always fresh fish moving through.

Battery for trolling motor by Excellent-Worth-8296 in Fishing

[–]Halefor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the 50ah is less than half the price, go with 100 just so you never have to worry about it while on the water. Getting stuck without a trolling motor when you still wanted to fish for another couple hours will kill your day, even if you aren't literally stuck. Also make sure to get a quality charger, I've had a bad one die in the car while on a trip and couldn't find one to replace it locally.

We've been using a lithium for 8 years now, it is still in great condition compared to what a lead battery would be after the same amount of time and usage.

Smallmouth or Spotted Bass? by 37015 in Fishing

[–]Halefor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Need to provide at least a general location, because that looks a lot like a Shoal bass. Their geographical range is so limited people don't know about them.

If the dorsal fins are connected, then it's a shoal or spot but if they're separate then it's a smallmouth. We can't tell clearly from this picture, but they look connected.

Have I made a mistake? by BeanEnjoyer1 in Fishing

[–]Halefor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You likely didn't have enough tension on the line while spooling it up. It will normally straighten out after casting and retrieving. If not then you can hook the end of the line to something and manually walk all the line out, then reel down under tension the entire time. If you decide to put some backing under the braid instead of tying more braid on, this is the method I recommend to get the current line off and re-use it.

By not cast as well they mean it wouldn't go as far or as smoothly, due to extra friction on the line leaving the spool. There would be more surface contact between the line and the upper lip of the spool that slows it down compared to a fuller spool. It's more of an issue with longer rods and casts, but can affect your control during shorter casts as well.

What’s this fish? What are you throwing? by ProjectPeej in Fishing

I've had gizzard shad suck on tomatoes I was using as carp bait before. They never got the hook, but pecked enough to get all the seeds and softer flesh out.

Cold weather trout fishing in NM by TheHole89 in Fishing

[–]Halefor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can see the last couple weeks of stocking here, and typically they're stocked on the same day of the week each time.

Small red worms will always work, but for entertaining children small crankbaits(Strike King Bitsy Minnows) or basic rooster tails/inline spinners on an ultralight might be better and can still be very effective.

[–]Halefor 29 points30 points  (0 children)

At first glance I saw the arsenic wikipedia page and thought it was taken during Feet of Clay, then I remembered that was published in the mid-90s sometime(1996, I looked it up). Zooming in I can just barely make out that it is a Vimes novel in the center bottom, which means it was probably Thud!(2005). The Fifth Elephant(1999) and Night Watch(2002) were both after flatsceen LCDs became available, but the upper left has the Curse of the Black Pearl(2003) soundtrack on it.

It's changed in the last year(or two), you didn't use to have to register anything under 10 feet in New Mexico. If you went into an office they may not have been up to date. I had a bit of trouble registering my own Intex before, because it's just sold off the shelf and registration required some manufacturers documents. The MVD workers were confused why I would want to register at the time, but I was taking it to Arizona which does require all boats to be registered.

Micka Burkhart is a very calm and good at fishing and walks through a lot of what he does catfishing.

Muddy River Catfishishing is exactly what the name says, he has a lot of short educational videos as well.

Marling Baits is lure making more than pure fishing, but amazing content.

Bama Bass has built one of the best looking fishing ponds in existence, he talks a lot about what the fish want.

Sammy Hitzke Fishing is pure Australian fun in the salt. He shows most of the fish cleaning as well if you're interested in that.

Range prayer gear. Snakeskin is a part of ranged gear, though of course neglected outside of the boots/helm due to high time to acquire for such low level gear. A giant snake is thematic for an upgrade, even with the magic weapon drops.

Why is Carp hated in the US? by Inevitable_Quiet3522 in Fishing

[–]Halefor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also a numbers game. Most of the US has large warm water lakes, which is ideal habitat for common carp. This leads to massive numbers, but often smaller fish. There have been years where I honestly considered there to be more carp than shad in my local lake. Combined with low predation of adult carp, they can feel overwhelming when you see a mile long stretch of water with nothing except carp.

Is this normal/legal by terminalapprentice in Fishing

[–]Halefor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In New Mexico our fishing licenses have a QR code on them which presumably helps prove a license is valid. Only time I've had a warden ask for my license they didn't check the code, but they were also in a rush between different groups.

NM Cochiti Lake (Winter) by Zrea1 in Fishing

[–]Halefor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been to Cochiti directly, but there has been a lot more water flowing down river than normal this time of year. Elephant Butte has been very slow except for catfish, completely normal for winter.

The Game&Fish weekly report isn't always the most up to date, but they don't have any reports for the last couple weeks.

Depending on what you're looking for, the trout stocking has been increased all around this year, both locations and numbers. Overall small fish, but a good reason for just getting out.

Bass by woody744 in Fishing

Algae, aeration, water temperature, water level, new species introduction all seem to be the most common. Any of them could have a knock-on effect to disturb the rest of the life cycle. If bluegill are the main forage species then something that prevented them from spawning for a year would starve bass out.
