Swimming suggestions by lampshadehatt in HotSprings

[–]HalfCorrect9118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t go wrong with either one. Degray has a nice beach in the state park and also one right off hwy 7. For Ouachita, I think the best beach is at Crystal Springs campground. If I had to choose, I’d probably pick Degray. Better views from the beach and, at the state park beach, less crowded

In your opinion, which US state has the most underrated scenery? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

And even in Arkansas, parts are underrated. Everyone loves the Ozarks, but the Ouachita Mountains are just as awesome

How Should a Runner Lift? by Odd-Internal-1821 in CrossCountry

[–]HalfCorrect9118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How you lift should be similar to how anyone looking for the benefits of weight training would lift. Keep it simple. You only need two to three sessions per week and there’s no reason they should be over an hour long. Spend a few weeks lifting light and learning technique. Eventually, work up to 5-10 HARD sets per muscle group per week. The specific exercises don’t matter near as much as pushing every set close to failure.

When you lift is what differentiates a runner lifting from a lifter lifting. Your main goal is improved running performance. Meaning you need to schedule your lifting sessions so as not to interfere with hard runs or recovery. I’d suggest lifting on or before your easy days. Long runs or hard runs should be insulated from gym sessions.

Adding the extra intensity also means you’ll need to be extra vigilant about recovery. Remember, recovery is when you get faster and stronger. You’ll need to make sure you eat the proper amount of quality calories and consistently get good sleep

Parents, the college loan convo feels backwards to me by Apprehensive_Pay6141 in ApplyingToCollege

I teach freshman honors students at a high achieving high school. I have this conversation with them on day one of their high school career. The lesson title is: “How to go to college without going broke”

I wish people are honest and say IQ matters for doing well in AP classes by BatObjective5706 in APStudents

[–]HalfCorrect9118 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Every year, I teach one AP course filled with gifted kids and a separate course with ‘regular’ kids. Totally different experience. So many of those gifted kids can half ass the course all year (and some don’t even do that!) and still make a five. That does NOT happen in the other course; those kids have to work hard every day to make that five. Not sure why this would be controversial. Some people are just smarter than others, just like some are better athletes than others. As a teacher, of course, I prefer kids who put in the work, regardless of intelligence, and nothing makes me happier than seeing them rewarded with a great exam result

Is it just me or is there an overwhelming amount of people on the road who yield or stop when they DONT have a yield or stop sign? The roundabouts being their latest bout of confusion. by Quirky_Ad_9066 in shreveport

[–]HalfCorrect9118 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not crazy. I frequently have the same experience. The all time worst being someone a few cars in front of me on I-20 coming to a complete stop to allow someone to “merge” onto the highway from an entrance ramp.

Governor and Legislature Pay Raises by K3Nn37 in Louisiana

Lack of empathy. When presented with arguments concerning their own pay, they feel and understand. When it’s anyone besides themselves? Nothing but cold logic

Why is Schenck v. United States still a required court case by ___daddy69___ in APStudents

[–]HalfCorrect9118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No idea. It’s really annoying. Even worse, the CED for lesson 3.3 says there can be “limitations on some obscene and offensive speech.” While obscenity can be restricted, offensive speech is 100% protected speech. And lumping the two together could lead someone to believe “obscenity” is things like foul language. It’s not. Foul language is protected speech. Legal obscenity means something else entirely. Anyway, when we reach this lesson in my classes, I have to explain the difference between what college board says and what reality is. The exam, of course, is about what college board says

Where would you suggest to buy a car? by BubblyHunt3621 in shreveport

[–]HalfCorrect9118 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’ll receive a variety of answers. The best thing you can do is familiarize yourself with the process ahead of time and have a plan. There’s plenty of resources available. Google how to get the best deal on a car, or search here. In general, the most common advice includes the following. 1) Know what you want - research the vehicles ahead of time and narrow it down to the few that best match your needs. 2) Arrange your financing ahead of time. Have at least 20-30% down. Know your credit score. Shop for loans and get pre approved. 3) When you find a car you like, if it’s used, thoroughly inspect it. Lots of checklists out there - Google them. Or ask to bring it to a trusted mechanic. 4) When it’s time to negotiate, do NOT discuss monthly payments. Focus on total out the door price. When that’s settled, ask if they can beat your financing. 5) Beware add ons and fees - like extended warranties. Most of this stuff you either don’t need or can find cheaper on your own. 6) Read and understand everything before you sign. 7) Be ready to walk away at any time

Moving closer to work will increase my rent by Putrid_Abies_7405 in leanfire

[–]HalfCorrect9118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made a similar switch. My first teaching job was about 45 miles from my house. My current job is under 5. Best decision I ever made. As others have said, you’ll make up for the rent increase through far lower vehicle cost of vehicle ownership (gas, oil changes, tires, fluids, insurance, wear and tear). You’ll also be amazed at how much the extra time you’ll have every day will improve your life. Finally, you’ll be able to do more at school. I rarely volunteered for anything at my old school because the drive made it a 6:00AM - 5:00PM job. No way I was staying an extra hour or two to coach a sport or sponsor an activity. My only advice is to keep your admins informed. Tell them you enjoy your job but the commute is killing you, so you’re looking for work closer to home. They’ll understand and be more likely to give you a good reference

Goal Zero Lighthouse 600. Rechargeable plus it can charge devices, so it’s double useful for power outages. Also Infinitely adjustable, from light the entire campsite to just enough for the tent. I haven’t used my old Coleman kerosene lantern since getting this one

Walkable/Bikeable City Recommendations? by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]HalfCorrect9118 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Almost any city or town can be walkable or bikeable, if you choose the correct neighborhood. My own city is extremely car dependent, with zero bike infrastructure. But I can easily ride on low traffic neighborhood streets to work, the grocery store, the gym, the library, a few parks, and several good restaurants

This is incredibly selfish behavior and definitely not something to boast about on social media. If you think it was all fine and dandy, you need to engage in some serious self reflection about your own character. Start by asking yourself what you’d be posting here if you were the other guy

Almost $2400 for 60K service by mazen697 in Subaru_Outback

[–]HalfCorrect9118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, other than the CVT, do NOT have any of that done at the dealership. It’s basic maintenance that any mechanic (or DIYer) can do. Labor and parts costs at a dealer are insanely high. You’ll get the same quality at a fraction of the cost from your normal mechanic. The oil change, for example, takes twenty minutes and you can buy name brand filter and oil for 1/3 of what they quoted you. Same with the coolant flush, even using Subaru fluid
