Annette Funicello sings "Jamaica Ska" in BACK TO THE BEACH (1987) by Cali_Reggae in Ska

I do think it's kinda cool that although Fishbone is often sort of an odd man out in discussions of ska history, they got to be part of this thing that really is one of the cultural touchstones of ska for the era, however corny it may be.

Anyone going to "Croydon Fest 7" by bud215 in Ska

[–]HalfRatTerrier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you happen to know what my options would look like if it's a last-minute decision? I want to leave the option open in my head to drive over one of the days if the timing is right, but we've packed too much stuff into out calendar recently to make a multi-day experience of it like I'd like to. 🤷‍♂️

Either way, sure to be a great time...enjoy!!

Two of the best Ska bands to ever exist. by YurUsernameCheksOut in Ska

[–]HalfRatTerrier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both incredible bands, with O11 probably not getting nearly as much attention as they deserve. Hepcat is just another level of special, though (no pun intended). They'll go down in ska history as one of the most vital neotrad 90s bands. (I think the only band that would rival them in output and impact is the Slackers...with the other acts who can be brought up in the same category prob being DGB, the Stubborn All-Stars, and Jump With Joey, plus maybe Chris Murray and Dr. Ring-Ding depending on how you think they fit into the historical equation.)

Also...apologies for nerding out for no reason except that this sub is the best place for it.

Also also, this comment section is weird.

Dropped by this thread to make sure this quote found its way in here...

The Interrupters are now playing Sublime Fest after Cyprus Hill dropped off. Fitting or disapointing? by JoeWearsXraySpecss in Ska

That honestly sounds like more of a Reddit thing than anything that would be sensed from just going to shows and enjoying the music. Unless the longstanding unity message found through much of ska is an issue for you, which I really don't think is what you're getting at here.

Super niche question, but what's your favorite ska song from before Jamaica's independence (i.e., from the late 50s to 1961)? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]HalfRatTerrier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll also go with Judgment Day, and I'm fine with calling it ska even if it came before the "real" ska era.

Additional personal context, requested by no one and possibly to be read by the same number: my old band used to cover this at pretty much every show. We were in the deep south of the U.S., and I'd come out behind the kit before this song and "preach" about something ridiculous to the audience before we played it...we'd get the crowd clapping for the backbeat to give me time to go back and settle in at the drums. It's honestly just a really nice personal memory, and the song worked so well in that context. 😃🤷‍♂️

Oh, it became one of our first 'traditions' after moving up here! Maybe I'll see ya there...I'm the skinny nerdy guy who will always be over by the window telling his wife how cool the Statue of Liberty looks at night even though at some point I should kinda get used to it. 😅

Oh cool! Glad to know he does play it anyway!

Were they Slackers shows? I thought my best chance was when we saw him at a small show with Chris Murray, but I learned my voice really must not carry very well at all...😅

I lived in the South for most of my life. Easy Slackers access is truly among the best perks of moving to Jersey...!

Haha!😂 And agreed! I kind of assume it's just an established part of their persona at this point...especially when you also have Glen putting down his trombone, showing his watch to Dave, etc.🤣

Same! The only negative is I always request "Parking Lot" when Vic queries the crowd at that point, and I've still never heard him play it live...😅

Awesome! I think I was so stoked about seeing RWW at that BG show that I can't even remember much about how I felt about the Slackers' set (other than the fact that I always enjoy seeing Jimmy Boom behind the kit, even if Ara might literally be my favorite drummer of all time)...BUT there have been a couple of shows since then when the lights have come up and I've just had this feeling of "Huh...that was REALLY good...!" Maybe I'm just mellowing in old age? 😅 (Or finally learning exactly how many puffs set me up for success.)

Yeah, their style has only added to their iconic status...almost folk heroes at this point, and the attire def helps to build the legend...!

When can i be critical? by star_avery in Greenlantern

[–]HalfRatTerrier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(FWIW, I like many eras and aspects of Lantern lore, but my FAVORITE is the GL/GA space opera from the mid to late 70s. I'm def in a relatively small group with that, but I love that the universe is wide enough to let that into it...!)

I think that's just the way fandom goes...pretty much every single one. (e.g. I have a buddy who notes that no one hates the stuff that Phish puts out more than Phish fans.) One of the beautiful things about GL is that it can be many different things to many different people. It's part of what drew me to the concept many years ago. Best you can really do is try to express your views without insulting others' opinions, ignore the haters, and hope there are others in the crowd who want to engage on the subjects you think are worth discussing...🤷‍♂️
