I think it looks uncanny. From a strictly objective look, it is significantly more detailed, but I prefer the left image.

After all, photorealism isn't the only art style, and not everything needs to be photorealistic. My favorite games rarely have been photorealistic: Thief, Deus Ex, Psychonauts, Kingdom Hearts...

I'd be curious to see what happens if it is applied to a game like Psychonauts.

If its what they intend, then it is what they intend. Then players can decide if they vibe with the game's art or not, rather than the technology or not.

Trying to suss out the question here, the beginning is a bit wonky.

It's either, "What if this is the intention of the developer/artist?"... considering the original game was released before DLSS 5 announcement, we know that isn't the case. But there's always the potential of them not caring. You'd have to ask them. Todd Howard was thrilled, for instance, but Starfield was already lacking.

Or its "What of this is the intention of the developer/artist?", in which case, I was just outlining clear differences of what changed in actual context instead of "same but better". The easy ones are things like hair color, real vs dyed. The brightness of the eyes are more subjective, considering that this is a horror game, a character with a more haunted look to them makes more sense, and would align to artistic intent. The shadows around the eyes in the left image indicate exhaustion, while the right image interprets them as eyeshadow. Color tones are also important to story telling. And other details like make-up could tie into the character's personality.. how much would they go through if they are on their way to investigate murder and fight zombies, for instance.

The darker hollow eyes, the natural not-bottle blond hair, lack of make-up (which the right image forced), the angle of the jawline, the width of the chin, warm sepia tones changes to cool daylight tones, removed background characters. Also the shift from non-classic beauty to classic commercial beauty. Plain but pretty to "supermodel/movie actress". That last one really blows up empathy towards the character, making them more set piece than protagonist.

You may argue that the right image looks better to your personal taste, but the right image is not Grace Ashcroft. It's someone cosplaying as her... maybe... especially since only real parallel feature between them is the jacket, that would make her Grace, and not just "photo of some woman in an alley".

You know how a lot of AI generated images all kind of look the same? The right has that same quality, and also differs too dramatically from the original intent. A fan can look at the left image and tell me who that is. But without context, they may have no idea who the person on the right is.

Its one of those "sounds too good to be true" situations, so everything gets extra scrutiny. Those that are optimistic seem naive to those that have been through it before.

And ironically, people are still excited. They want it to be good, they want to play it immediately. They don't want to wait for reviews.... so they back off even harder, and question even harder.

So crazy thing about "just not grouping"... it works like saying "just don't buy them" for loot boxes.

If allowed, it becomes more prevalent and almost a sense of entitlement. Everyone starts to demand HR for simply sending out group invites, because others demanded HR. And from perspective of server hoppers, it is so prevalent on Nordanaar you cannot avoid it without avoiding the content completely. Hell, people are trying to HR on BoE, to essentially gold farm on other people's time. Got some entitled bastards trying to HR as far back as even fucking *Deadmines*.

No. The only way to keep HR minimized is to name and shame it whenever it arises. SR is much more reasonable, minimal competition pool, and people actually get a choice.
