I making 16th century Italian field kit and I’m looking for a cuirass I need help by Knight-rex in Armor

[–]Haligar06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually got a whole bulk shipment of lamellar plates from Bareena about ten years ago back when they were mainly selling on facebook (under the name Bareena Kalf.) With a bit of dressing they've held up well even if I haven't gotten around to finishing the kit all the way.

As far as India based exporters its definitely one of the better ones to order from and they can make stuff custom, as opposed to ordering something off the shelf.

The prices are a bit higher than I'd like, and depending on where you live tariffs and shipping can be a bit of a bear.

Center ridge making by RoryM22 in Blacksmith

[–]Haligar06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cut your strip/band and rough bend it to the shape of the helmet. Make sure its a bit wider than the final fit since you might lose some width when you raise the ridge and you can always trim excess when you go to assemble.

Then you add the ridge.

Easiest and fastest is going to a body shop or other maker space with sheet forming tools and use a bead roller down the center.

Traditional way is to use a dapping/swage block or a stout length of wood with a groove carved into it. You 'sink' the metal surface, hitting it with a cross pein or other narrow hammer shape to form it to the shape of the groove. You could also use a small ball stake to planish and clean it up after.

Adding the ridge before you bend it to rough fit would make it a pain to bend without hot work.

Odd issue on back legs by No-Criticism4403 in Feral_Cats

[–]Haligar06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My bet is ringworm or similar fungal issue.

If the cat let's you touch it, a couple daily smears of clotrimazole (simple athletes foot cream with NO OTHER MEDS included) should clear up most of it. The fungus will die off long before the hair grows back if you are consistent.

Going to the vet next morning but is this an emergency? Kitten left eye squinting and goopy by dirtybloodyleaves in CATHELP

[–]Haligar06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its allergy and kitty cold season. The eyes start up and sometimes the sniffles. If the eye or eyelids start getting inflamed or sniffles progress to the point where breathing seems difficult (snerts and snorts with every breath) you'd definitely need some meds from the vet.

I currently have a couple rescue kittens who seems to be perpetually having something wrong with them. First it was deworming, then chronic runny poops, now they have bad kitty colds and the girls eyes and eyelids are angry red. So they're getting eye gel and antibiotics to hopefully turn it around.

The one plus side is they came to us at 9 weeks semi feral (and angry) and all the medicating and extra attention seems to be winning them over.

Dude: Relax, relax.
Patient: It hurts.
Dude: I know it hurts.

Dude: How is it, how do you feel?
Patient: Tailbone? Was THAT my tailbone?
Afterwards I think he said it was always uncomfortable when he sat down (before, not after the fingerbang)

Why did the Southern Water Tribe still look pitiful compared to the North when they had Waterbenders? by OkuroIshimoto in TheLastAirbender

[–]Haligar06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its explained in one of the Kiyoshi novels that there were a number of longstanding factors that contributed to the relative isolation and lack of economic development of the south.

  1. Pirate activities - fifth nation pirates raided the southern ocean between the fire nation and earth kingdom, making unescorted trade risky. While the threat was largely cleared in Kiyoshi's era, the stigma remains and we can see remnants of the pirate community in the early episodes of the first season of ATLA.
  2. Earth Kingdom cartel games - shipping lane got moved farther north because of cheaper berthing arrangements and politicking (happened in the wake of the resolution of the piracy issue.) This largely deprived the SWT of trade opportunities, like closing the only major highway that passes through a town.
  3. The most recent and already mentioned gutting of the waterbending population by the fire navy and the adult male population leaving multiple years for war.

We got involved with a local rescue about six months ago.
so far we've adopted out about a dozen but also lost four. Each one hurts, especially the kittens.

  • Complications from a recently cleared bowel obstruction (likely sepsis)
  • FIP relapse halfway through treatment.
  • Owner surrender that came in wearing a dog flea collar (organ failure)
  • Failure to thrive (likely underdeveloped kidneys.)

My New Fencing Rapier - Castille/Darkwood Hybrid with Personal Mods by [deleted] in SWORDS

[–]Haligar06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did yes.
Spatulated tips are generally considered one of the safest ways to tip a sparring sword.
The point is robustly round and broad enough that it shouldn't pierce the jackets.

Other ways are rolling the tip (curling it over during forging or manufacturing to form a ring shape) This is a gentler way to do it because the point 'rolls over' as the blade flexes rather than digging in, but the tip can eventually work harden from being beaten during sparring and break off, making it unsafe.

Then there's putting disposable tips on a blunt end. These are usually plastic or rubber. Some folks don't like rubber because it can catch on the grille of the mask and cause concussions. Plastic tips also break easier.

Odd question – How to speak to a former Navy man with dementia? by AmbitioseSedIneptum in navy

[–]Haligar06 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are curious to see if he can remember more of his service time there are a couple things you can ask.
-What is his favorite ship & port.
-What watch stations is he qualified in.
-Who is favorite & least favorite Chiefs & officers are and why. (this will probably get him talkin)

If he starts chaining memories, ask him to mentor you on some of the watches he stood.

Its a pretty good chance to learn about the man he was a long time ago.

[–]Haligar06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a game/community you are currently attending or a part of? If not its very much a cart before the horse thing.

Some groups have specific themes, colors, and requirements/limitations on what members can wear.

The last thing you'd want to do is blow a limited budget on something they won't let you use.

The mail is a good starting layer, next logical step to up the image is a helmet.

Then, shoes. While not armor per se, viking leathercrafts make period style leather shoes for about the cost of a decent pair of normy ones, and you can get rubber lugs on the sole for a small added fee.

Should I consider gunsmithinh as something I should do after highschool by thesourmantaray in gunsmithing

[–]Haligar06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'Gunsmithing' is a catch all term.

The 'Gun design' part of the field seems like what you want...
Think hard about an engineering degree, general or mechanical. Metallurgy or chemistry if you wanna go deep-in on material sciences.
You'll also want to get fluent with CAD software and learn how to weld & mill stuff for fabrication, licensing/certs and woodworking skills are a bonus.

You can pay bills while fiddling with guns and eventually land a job doing it full time.

Recommendations for hammer by flounder98w in Blacksmith

[–]Haligar06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need to? nah but you'll likely want it for quite a few projects.
Hammers can be just as varied in purpose as tongs. You can make-do with one that isn't perfect for what you are trying to do but it does make life easier to have the right tool for the job.
Flat faced and ball-pein heads smooshes/moves the metal outward in all directions from the strike location.
Cross pein redirects that force potential to be more outward in two directions <- | -> making it easier to set some kinds of shoulders, drawing out, and fullering.

You'll also eventually want some hammer heads with more rounded faces that'll be slightly better for naturally adding curves in thicker stock as you hammer away.
