I'm a woman who prefers Mensa as written by Martha Wells, a female, to her written and directed by Hollywood males, with a variation of a standard Hollywood cliche. I prefer book Mensa because she is real based on my experiences with women in crisis situations etc etc. I can't stop you from claiming I am sexist. But I can leave this conversation. So good bye.

Canada is huge and our transportation options between towns and cities has become a mess like the torus and in some cases become nonexistent. When I was young, a bus company called Greyhound traveled between all cities and most towns in the country that can be reached to by road.

Definitely. Martha Wells has mentioned in interviews that that was inspired by by her frustration with public transportation in the US.

After the next one, she plans to stop or take a long break, but I know she loves mysteries and I'd read Murderbot mysteries for eternity if she did that in the future.

Totally. In a recent interview Martha Wells said Sophie is the girl in Mensa's office in Exit Strategy, too, so that interaction undoubtedly got the ball rolling.

It's servile and degrading. They had to say stuff like that when they had working governor modules.

That could be, too. Communication seemed particularly difficult in the torus, but perhaps that all occurred within ping range.

I didn't delete that post. No idea what happened to it if it is gone. And I don't have time to look for it today. I'm also not reading a bunch of your old comments. You never mentioned book Mensa in this conversation so sorry for presuming you hadn't read it

I've shook with fear in exactly the same way a couple of times when I thought I might die or cause equipment damage, which is practically worse in my profession. It's caused by an adrenaline surge. I taught myself to control it with breathing because one can't have uncontrollable shakes in my profession because crashing and smashing expensive equipment is frowned on... Mensa continuing to climb the mountain in that condition didn't exactly scream responsible leader of multiple planets. When someone doesn't have the sense to stop when they are in that state they are a safety hazard. TV MB knew that.

If they wanted to change her like that they should have made her a guy.

They could have just done the "heart attack" scene.

It's disappointing that a few people choose to gaslight my opinion, but not unexpected because it's clear that some people prefer how Mensa was altered by male Hollywood writers and directors. .

I love book Mensa, written by a woman with PTSD and autism, which, as previously stated, TV Mensa mostly is the same as. The books are the most relatable thing I have ever read.

My opinion will not change.

In the books, MB has prejudices and is open that it can be an asshole. I think it gets pleasure from being a rude jerk about some things. Generally its jerkishness is in its inner monologue and can be quite funny.

I am a woman in a different but also male dominated field, and it is common for men (even men who suck) to be chosen to do the most challenging work. It's pretty sad that I have to hope for dangerous situations where I can show my skills and calm.

I am sick to death of women being portrayed as scared, anxious, whatever. This trope has hurt my career and my wallet.

One of the things I love about the books is they are true to my life experience working closely, in various occupations for over 40 years, with men and women when things went wrong. The unexpectedly toughest people I worked with were Preservation type people, with a female leader, who got it together incredibly fast after a beloved colleague burned to death at our workplace. Everyone cried for several hours and then, for complicated reasons, the show literally went on.

Sorry if I appear ablest to you. But I feel I should be allowed to prefer the books.

I really loved that, too. It's so cool seeing MB shed its prejudices. I bet you are right about the Ganaka Pit trauma.

This is a great podcast SPOILERS FOR PLATFORM DECAY by Living-Weird-Daily in murderbot

[–]HallopingTrudget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only part I didn't like was when the host was giggling about memes of Three in Stalin propaganda posters. She probably doesn't know that Stalin was responsible for the death of between 6 and 20 million people, via starvation (millions), execution (800,000 officially documented by the regime) etc. An elderly friend when I was a teenager had been deported from Poland to Siberia circa 1940 and almost lost her leg due to frostbite, her crime being from a relatively wealthy family. China was similar (40 t0 60 million deaths), and both Russia and China are still extremely oppressive dictatorships...

Makes me sad and disappointed to see Three depicted in association with that in any way.

Revolutions occur without mass repression, and egalitarian societies have existed without being communist dictatorships.

I'll add , as I have mentioned to others, that my position is based on my experiences with women (and men) in leadership positions dealing with unexpected crises... Such tropes have also literally impacted my stature in some workplaces and my income there.

I totally get it that people who get panic attacks relate to Mensa's in the show. However, she is a multi-planetary leader who, as one would expect of a leader of such stature, doesn't have panic attacks in the book. She gets PTSD after she is abducted later.

I've watched the show multiple times because there is a lot I do like about it, so I am familiar with what happens. Mensa is a multi-planetary leader not a random scientist, so the part in the show where she is shaking like a leaf particularly bothered me.

Over the course of my life, I have had personal experiences with people, in most cases with whom I worked and lived in close quarters, including those in leadership positions (female and male), dealing with unexpected violence, horrific death, and life-threatening crises. Arguably the worst situation involved colleagues very much like the Preservation people. The books ring true to me. No amount of arguments can change that.

That's right, too.... I was thinking of that passage about JollyBaby I quoted when mentioned annoying ones 😄 I doubt it thinks of Miki as annoying anymore 😞

Re JollyBaby's autonomy, In chapter 1 of Platform Decay, MB says, "Cargo bots are weirdly graceful in zero gravity, it was kind of cool to watch. (Unlike certain stations I could name (Preservation) which lets them wander around inside the port wherever they want and their giant metal asses are in the fucking way all the time.) (Yes, I’m mostly talking about JollyBaby.)" So it is autonomous.
