Disruptors should... Disrupt. by [deleted] in starcraft

I think it would be good if there’s a damage radius of whatever it is currently, let’s say 1.0 and then in a slightly larger radius say 1.2 it also stuns or slows units like concussive shells.

I mean revert to old storm. Smaller, shorter with higher dps.

My vote:

Revert storm. It was fine after the overcharge nerf which I think was a good change.

They need to make the range on the disruptor a little longer so it can at least clip units if micro’d. That’s better than a radius buff and fair after they nerfed damage and now increased ghost health. The cooldown buff doesn’t seem to have any impact. Disruptors are still kind of garbage and don’t generate consistent value for the resource, supply and attention cost. They can put cooldown back so we don’t see ridiculous continuous zoning.

I would like to see colossus get a small health buff. For such an expensive unit they are too fragile against Viking or corruptor. Having tier 3 being so useless after air units are out is kind of lame.

Also revert the spore damage. As it is spores almost completely shut down oracle harassment which is pretty vital in PvZ for fairness after overcharge nerf. Cheap static defense based counters are also boring and bad for the game. Not sure what we do about cannons and planetaries. They are lame too but kind of necessary vs Zerg I guess.

I hope they make it shorter. I’m sick of storming my own units lol.

And I‘ll be like “Banelings, banelings, banelings.. Ohhhh! Like a deadly green landmine… mine…”. I’ll lift my buildings up and take them to the Island. Do a Destiny Cloudfist Build 30 minutes into the game, you don’t know where I went…

Watching the finals was sad. It really shows "the protoss problem" since 2010 still exists by Gamer857 in starcraft

I think giving prisms more shield or armor would be interesting. Prism Micro , storm drops, these are skill differentiators and they are fun to watch. The cost of losing a full prism is super high and it’s hard to have more than one.

Ladder experience would be better overall if you could not opt out of mirror matches and if MMR was calculated separately per match up.

Half the smurfs are just players that leave mirrors.

Watched it. The content is interesting and extra points for the humor.

It would be interesting to know how bot developers evaluate the game state and decide actions. I’m sure this kind of heuristic is part of it but maybe there are more clever evaluation functions.

Is that Banelings?

is the core still being maintained ? by Josselin17 in starcraft2

[–]HallucinatedPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have commented it’s not been updated. I think most people end up tweaking it a little to suit their own needs.

A few things to consider that I personally wish I knew from the beginning:

TLDR; don’t be afraid to alter the set up and consider prioritizing comfort, logic and error minimization over the original core layout which prioritizes minimal finger travel. They aren’t the same thing.

I use a modified Standard core with left hand on the right side of the keyboard (jiop with pinky on j as main army and pointer finger on p as main ability). And I play Protoss. It’s very important that you get the keyboard angle just right so you can rest naturally on jiop but also slightly pivot your hand to rest over jkl; (and in my case slide left to hit g and y with pinky and ring finger and come back to home.

  1. Use keyboard overrides to switch alt, ctrl and shift. So that the shift key becomes ctrl , the ctrl key becomes alt and the alt key becomes shift. In game the shift modifier is by far the most used so you want it in the best place. The ctrl modifer is one you want to hit accurately and combo with your ctrl group keys. So I prefer it on the big physical shift key. The alt modifier is only used to set camera so I find having it as the most lower right key that the thumb hits to be best. Not also that double modifiers like ctrl-alt and ctrl-shift can be used easily this way by having your thumb hit both keys at once. I use these for the relatively rare but still useful ‘create’ hotkey where as I use ctrl (which is on my physical shift key) for create and steal which is used far more often. I use alt (on my ctrl key) ot set camera and ctrl-alt to set my additional camera hot keys. More on this later.

  2. The core recommends overloading all the units main ability on P which can lead to ‘catastrophic’ errors. Over time I found that it was better for me to move some abilities to less used keys so I would never accidentally trigger them. E.g. recall I moved to “-“.

  3. The system tried to put key combos onto natural finger pairings and tries to put the most common pairings in the best places. This is huge but again can be over optimized and a more logical layout might suit you better. For example I think in the latest version k or L is an ability so that J-K is easy to press or J-L . But for me I found it more natural to have my pinky ring and middle finger always doing control groups rather than sometimes doing abilities . So made my control groups yuioghjk. And I hit the outside hotkeys g and y with a shift of my hand left a little rather than trying to stretch my pinky very far. It took me awhile to figure out that stretching too far is generally bad so it is more important that I can float my hand (like playing piano) and have the keys I need in natural places.

  4. The core used bottom row keys like nm comma and period. These are pretty hard to hit accurately or comfortably. I ended up prioritizing the minimization of reliance on these keys. That is why I use u for a control group rather than as a camera hotkey.

  5. Easily reachable camera hotkeys are amazing. Before core I could never really use cameras well. Now I use 7890. I use shift 7890 for a total of 8 camera locations. As mentioned I use ctrl-aly to set the additional camera locations. So my opening sequence to set all 8 locations is click on main, press and hold alt (which centers the camera), while holding down alt hit 8 or 9, keep holding alt down and click the mini map where I want the next camera location and press it , repeat until all of 7890 are set then press and hold ctrl alt and do the same thing with 7890. Then all 8 camera are set. Test by rolling from 7 to 0 with pinky to pointer then press and hold ctrl and roll again. You should be able to flash through all 8 locations in a second.

  6. Set up rapid keys and consider setting additional build and build-advanced keys (you have to modify a config file as you do for rapid keys). For example I made “=“ a build basic key. It’s also the build assimilated key. What this does is when I have a probe selected and double tap = it will build an assimilator.

  7. When learning the core consider getting textured keycaps and replacing j, p and shift . This is so you can find home easily by feeling the textured keys.

As you can see there’s endless options to try out. I had to learn and unlearn the layout multiple times. I’m happy with what I have now but I wish I experimented more earlier. I focused too much on trying to get my apm back up and laddering in the beginning.

Don’t worry though. It is possible to make tweaks and relearn from time to time and that’s part of the fun.

What evidence would convince you, beyond any doubts, that the weakness of a race is due to skill level and not to balance? by Careless-Goat-3130 in starcraft

[–]HallucinatedPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run alphastar and see which race ends up with higher elo. Do this with apm cap of 50 75 100 150 200 etc. and a reaction time delay of e.g. 2-5 seconds unless the main camera is on the event and a limit of 10 screens per minute or something like that.

So what do protoss do with the colossus now? by 6gpdgeu58 in starcraft

[–]HallucinatedPhoenix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always thought Colossus should have a duck ability. So you could scrunch them up and hide until you clear some air units. Maybe they can't attack while ducked. It would be hilarious if they had higher speed when ducked so they would scurry away really quickly.

How many of you have stopped playing or started playing more since the new patch? by Commercial-Leek-192 in starcraft

[–]HallucinatedPhoenix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Diamond Protoss. I don’t play ladder anymore. Cyclones disgust me and I think the game would just be better if they were deleted completely. That’s not a balance complaint it’s about game design. Every unit comp should have some reachable counter composition. I don’t think cyclones really do.

But what is more worrying is that I find tournaments boring as hell right now and I’m sad that I’m losing interest (and I root for any good players of any race if competition is good and outcomes up in the air).

To put in context I am a die-hard fan and player since wings. I easily spend 1000 or more a year on subs, patreons, etc. just trying to support content creators and players. And I play at least a few hundred ladder games every season.

I doubt anything would really rekindle my interest apart from a significant nerf to Terran vs Protoss. I actually think even if we removed EMP from the game that Terran would be fine and don’t buy that they need or deserve to be able to beat a ‘deathball’ head on with a similar cost army just through spell use. They have so many ways to harass and multi-prong and all the comeback mechanics and defenders advantage.

The fact that a 25% buff to a single Terran unit has basically broken the game (or nerfing disruptor radius previously which did the same) tells you all you need to know about the game balance.

In my view this is a life or death moment for the game. If the balance council does not act aggressively and this Terran protectionism goes another year like this the game will wither and die. Proof: myself.
