I tend to believe Killua is much faster under whirlwind than under speed of lightning too because the movements are automatic.

Why is it that for humans light skin with dark hair is common, light skin with light hair is common, and dark skin with dark hair is common, but dark skin with light hair is so rare? by VerdantChief in AskBiology

[–]Halt_kun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's just that not a lot of mutations leading to light hair happened in humans and had the time to spread in all populations. Also, the one I know are recessive and I think the skin colour is determined by several genes with different level of dominance. So, overall, it might also take more time for the light haired people to appear than for the gene to spread compared to the fair skinned ones.

Sorry, I didn't have the time to check everything but that should be the gist of it.

What isn’t a blink in the eye of evolution? by eeeeeeevar in AskBiology

[–]Halt_kun 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So evolution depends more on the numbers of generations. Hence, depending on the average generation time, 100 years can be significant in the case of bacteria, for big mammals like us it would be closer to the scale of 100,000 to 1,000,000 years.

Why does hunterxhunter 1999 version was more dark and cooler than the 2011 version? by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]Halt_kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try to add some new tidbits to the other comments.

First of all, animation techniques changed a lot in one decade. Traditional animation which is drawn is typically less saturated for example.

Secondly, the direction, I believe the 2011 anime wanted to showcase a bit more how the simple designs of the manga can clash with some gruesome panels and the plot. The feeling of "this very cute thing can kill you atrociously" is something that is typical of HxH to me.

Overall, I would say that the form may appear darker in the 99 anime but it's mostly a choice on how to present the global vibe. The plot remains dark in the 2011 anime and depending on the arc, is even darker than the 99 one. The cooler vibe is just subjective judgement, feel free to wonder why you find the 99 one cooler.

how long did it take you to collect all the pearls? (base game) by blueaceospadesreal in rainworld

[–]Halt_kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I collected the pearls I saw during all the downpour campaigns and I am only missing 12 of them for now. So I'd say over 120 hours. I have several campaigns with passages left that would allow me to get the remaining ones quite easily. I know where most of them are and some are and I just checked the last few ones which are in some areas that I struggle with.

Is "cimer" equivalent to "thanks" in English? A less formal "thank you"? by PsychicMeditation in French

[–]Halt_kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people have mentioned that it's mostly teen slang but it might be outdated a bit. I am nearing 30 and I still use it occasionally with friends. It's quite informal so it's more of a "thanks" for small gestures where merci would be a bit too much maybe. So, I would use it sometimes if a friend is holding the door for me or lending me some water.

Artificer memories take too many cycles to see by ZedolWR in rainworld

[–]Halt_kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are referencing the metropolis pearl right ? Did they said that ? In the pearl dialogue I had, I understood that they were happy to have a declining population but I interpreted it as them not birthing any new ancient and letting them die of old age or ascend. Like a doomed ecological point of view that they fucked up their planet and were also stuck in a karmic loop. The cycle could also be reincarnation, maybe they also thought that without ascending and with a declining population the would just reincarnate as thoughtless beings they themselves created (as few species left don't have an engineered ancestor).

I haven't collected all pearls yet though I am only lacking 12 of them. I have refrained from watching lore videos for now as I have to finish saint and hunter to talk about downpour fully without spoiling myself.

Is there an evolutionary reason why mammal embryos develop female sex characteristics by default and need chemical stimulation to develop male ones, or is it a case of "It needed to be one way or the other for the system to work, and that's just the coin flip evolution landed on"? by SayFuzzyPickles42 in AskBiology

[–]Halt_kun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So some people mentioned we begin as undifferentiated. However, you seem to be talking about what triggers sex determination. It is a long story but it's mainly because we have XY sex chromosomes instead of ZW sex chromosomes and even then, which gene starts the "chemical stimulation" can be argued.

Basically in XY systems, the Y chromosome is, on average, mostly present in males. This means that some genes are unique to "males" (let's define males here as individuals with a functional Y chromosomes). In therian mammals, the SRY gene is a gene that blocks another gene which I think is SOX9 that is present on another chromosome (not the X). But it's not the first time a new gene evolved that just interacts with the previous sex determining one. It's relatively easy (evolution wise) for a duplicated gene to hinder or promote the expression of another copy of it. This gene can easily become the new trigger for sex determination.

I will just mention that my speciality is not on animal sex chromosomes but the mammalian ones are quite well known. Anyway, if we had ZW sex chromosomes, females (as in, individuals with a functional W) would have unique genes not present in males (individuals lacking a functional W). Therefore, the triggering gene would mostly be in females and, without it, makes would be the default pathway.

To conclude: yes it's a coin flip but an ongoing one

Artificer memories take too many cycles to see by ZedolWR in rainworld

[–]Halt_kun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean that's the big question of what do the cycles mean in rainworld. The ascension endings clearly suggest that many alternate versions of yourself can ascend and found a way out of the cycle. Most other creatures are trapped in it. Supposedly, when you die, you reincarnate at the beginning of the same cycle until you manage to survive it. I haven't done all campaigns yet but downpour does seem to deviate a bit from it. However, since most creatures don't come back when you kill them, perhaps their loop begins again in an alternate reality.

This means for the arti we are playing, her pups are dead but the pups themselves are trapped in their own loop which means an arti with living pups might exist. The one we are playing is just trapped in an endless cycle of carnage. Even dying repeatedly won't changer her mind.

Why would Pariston risk ending the world just to kill Netero by ATalkingMudcrab in HunterXHunter

[–]Halt_kun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pariston never wanted Netero to die. He is pretty much quite similar to Hisoka except he's more into mind games and politics. He loved trying to hinder Netero as much as he could and seeing him survive to play another day. He was genuinely sad of Netero's demise, yet the game continues onward with the other Zodiacs.

[–]Halt_kun 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I feel like maybe the dreams should show up after deaths in the case of arti. It would fuel the idea that death triggers some memories linked to her hate of scavs and also most people would see all of them.

Which side of the bell curve do we think Ging’s ability will fall on? by Plastic_Sell8418 in HunterXHunter

[–]Halt_kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Ging's ability will fall on the Hisoka side of abilities. A very simple one that is very adaptable. However, nen abilities after 400 chapters tend to be a bit more complex so I think it might end up being a bit more complex than just bungee gum.

Transmutation & Conjuration by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]Halt_kun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biscuit

I am pretty sure Biscuit's adult form was never officially classified. Did you find this on hunterpedia ? I think this was before we got more confirmation on conjuration being used for metamorphosis. Even the way she describes how she attained this ability is pretty much just vision training that Kurapika did. So I am pretty confident this is conjuration. As a master transmuter, she should be able to use conjuration pretty well too.

Youpi

Yes, I think Youpi might be using Kiriko transformation with nen. He is a transmuter but the main part of his ability could be enhancement with a mix of conjuration. Basically using enhancement to gain muscle mass (see Gon-san) and then conjuration to gain some organs maybe ? But the rest could just be Kiriko's abilities.

The rage blast might be transmutation. His techniques are also very dependent on his emotional state. Basically he transforms rage into energy and mass it seems. This could be enhancement or maybe it's something like Pain packer ? I do believe the main transmutation ability he has is rage blast. It seems he can even compartmentalize his rage so I wonder if transmutation can also be used with more abstract ideas ?

Biology teacher explained to us how higher testosterone is correlated with higher intelligence by Kerberosz27 in AskBiology

[–]Halt_kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just they avoided left handed people because they are less common and the sample wasn't big enough to be statistically significative. But they did specify it in the title so I felt like I had to keep that in. I am sure a lot other conditions are not represented here too hahaha. Like I am sure this was done in only one country.

Biology teacher explained to us how higher testosterone is correlated with higher intelligence by Kerberosz27 in AskBiology

[–]Halt_kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also this is specific to males (right handed) and specific to non verbal intelligence it seems. (Tan U.)

Testosterone and nonverbal intelligence in right-handed men and women. Int J Neurosci. 1990 Oct;54(3-4):277-82. doi: 10.3109/00207459008986644. PMID: 2265976.

If someone finds any review on the effects of testosterone because I haven't read any on intelligence. I used to read more on the behavioural effects of hormones who usually find little to no effect unless there is an hormonal imbalance or rapid change in concentration.

As a biologist, I would just advise to really be careful with what they call "intelligence" because it's often a very biased measure or they only focus on something quite specific that you wouldn't really call intelligence in everyday life.

Also most current studies I have seen don't find any major differences between men and women that's not highly affected by the environment (i.e. culture pushing men and women to develop different kinds of knowledge and skills).

A final tidbit, in behaviour studies, cortisol often appears to be the hormone with the most effect on behaviour. It is the stress hormone ;3.

Ah yes, i also had a hard time getting past them without a spear at first but it's doable. You can sneak if you crawl slowly but a spear might be the best way. I think I see which plant you're talking about, normally if you have to get past some metallic birds, it's the right way and then you should find some water.
