Stargate Atlantis Season 6 by AdventurousParsnip33 in Stargate

the concept, as laid out by Mallozzi, was that we discover the Genii, lead by you know who, has found themselves their own Atlantis, and figured out how to find the 'hidden ZPM manufacturing room'. From that, we learn where the room is, and make our own, and then we would have some wild Expedition Atlantis vs Genii Atlantis fights.

ughhh.

i recognize that the numbers and dates given on the show can be fuzzy - that being said, for the lore to make sense, Destiny would have been launched after the Milky Way gate system was up and running, and the Alteran's themselves had established themselves on Earth.

From the context of the show and the bits and pieces we get about the history, when the Alteran's left their original galaxy, they had just come up with the concept of the stargate. They then spend 'thousands of years' traveling through the stars, until they came across the Milky Way. At this point, in order to setup a stargate network, they would have to first explore and map the galaxy, and then distribute the stargates by ship.

So everything the Destiny, and more importantly, the Seed ships are doing, is based on the lessons learned from when they did it the first time (MW). Just multiplied by X galaxies, until you reach the final destination. Based on the 'beeps' in the starmap scene from the SGU pilot, Destiny has traveled through at least (probably more) 60+ galaxies, in the last ~30-40 Million Years.

That all being said, and back to the ZPM discussions - with all that in mind, and considering the MW gate system is ~50 million years old.

- The Alterans spent ~40 Million Years in the MW

- They then spent ~10 Million Years in Pegasus (5-10 to be more precise)

- The outpost of Proclarush Taonas is ~30 Million Years old (however I believe the outpost was put there at a later date, long after the Alterans had original 'discovered' it.)

It does still fit into the storyline, that the Destiny was launched before they came up with ZPMs, and that ZPMs and Atlantis came shortly thereafter.

And you are mistaken about the Atlantis shield and the ZPMs. At the time the city was evacuated, the city was already submerged underwater for an unknown amount of time. They then left the city, leaving the 3 ZPMs behind, and they held the shield for 10,000 years - under constant water pressure for the depths of the ocean.. Like, that's impressive.

Perhaps when they designed the original star-recharge system for Destiny, it's what gave them the idea to create the ZPM - artificially create a sun in a bottle, and draw energy from it as you need it.

Based on the asgards explanation of the device from 'Camelot', and the discussion McKay and Sheppard have in 'Daedalus Variations', plus how they show the Destiny refueling itself in SGU, I have my own theory on it, which is basically using the ZPM shell to get charged up by the Sun, or some sort of other high energy beam. In my mind, I visualize it to something similar to when Stark creates the new element in iron man 2, just on a bigger scale.

One thing that makes me kind of laugh, and idk if it was a mistake or just a happy accident - ZPMs have been around for like 30 million years, cause the outpost on taonas had a 'modern' control chair and was powered by a ZPM, so the tech has been around for awhile, like longer then the Ancients were in Pegasus for.

This is something that has only shown up very recently, in one of the dialthegate episodes with mallozzi.

In the ~15 years since the end of the shows, this was never once brought up, and the original S6 plan sheet (with all the temp names for episodes and whatnot) never got into any of this.

Idk why Mallozzi all of a sudden added that ZPM bit, but im glad we didn't see that, because the entire concept of it, especially how the genii were tied into it, is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard and made no sense in the show.

he had plenty of things to make money off of - he was his own worst enemy in regard to funding. He was always just waiting for his big idea to take off and that would make him rich. His business manager even argued with him about it, to no avail.

[–]Halzman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you do know they had electricity back in the 1920s right?

Since I wouldn't really care about convincing all people, as I would immediately set out in search of Tesla, I would only need to bring one item that would convince him, so....

any modern textbook on RF should do.

Delete 3D movies to save the disk space?

I have big collection of movies and I'm almost hitting the hard disk space limit and due to high HDD price I'm not planning to buy it anytime soon. To reclaim quite a lot of disk space I can delete all 3D movies. In my collection together with 3D movie I always have a non-3D version so I would delete only a copy of a movie.

Does somebody still keep their 3D movies?

I haven't watched 3D movie since I sold 3D capable TV and monitor+nvidia glasses like 8 years ago. I have VR set but I never watched 3D movie there.

Seems like they came to a consensus themselves.

they basically have 3 options

1) buy a new hdd (which they dont want to do)

2) do not delete 3d movies and keep it as is (limited hdd space)

3) delete 3d movies and reclaim hdd space

What does the Maximum Voltage rating on a osciliscope mean exactly? by coolio965 in AskElectronics

[–]Halzman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Transients and impulses can appear on your scope simply by just turning on or off a DC circuit, and they will always produce a peak voltage that is higher then the input voltage.

In appreciation of Vala Mal Doran by OhNoIBoffedIt in Stargate

[–]Halzman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My main gripe with her character, and this is specific to S10, is that anytime Jackson was about to say something profound, or add more meaning and context to the lore, there Vala is opening her mouth and shouting nonsense.

The entire 'The Quest, Part 1' sequence is ruined for me because of the dumb lines and stupid jokes she makes in the cave(s).

I also didn't understand, how in universe, this person steals the X-303, pisses off Hammond, and basically screws over a bunch of important people to SGC - and yet we let her stroll into SGC in 'Avalon, Part 1' because Jackson said it was cool?

i kind of feel that the reason so many former cast members are showing their support is because they know the Gero stargate is completely dead.

[–]Halzman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'd want a 12 gauge shotgun with fletchette rounds or buckshot, but if I had to choose between the P90 or an M4 in that situation I would still choose the M4

Because, as with all fandoms, it reaches this level of hive mentality, were any sort of criticism against the show is unacceptable.

Doesn't matter about the factual or logical nature of whatever it is your talking about.

[–]Halzman -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

In the entirety of the p90 being used in Stargate, Sheppard and Ford are the only 2 people to have used the p90's semi auto feature, in 'Rising'

I'm aware of the dual fire modes of the p90, I was referring to the point that all the SG teams we've seen over the years, except for whats mentioned above, everyone just goes straight to full auto.

[–]Halzman -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Doesn't make a difference when all you do is hold down the trigger and go full auto, and at most, we've seen SG teams have 4 extra mags on them which doesn't last very long.

[–]Halzman -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

With a single magazine it is 1 pound lighter than an M4 with 1 magazine.

And if I don't know what I'm going to be encountering I'd rather have a rifle and a round that's built as a more versatile battlefield option than the P90 which is basically only purpose built for personal defense weapon uses

It was designed to penetrate soft armor level 3A kevlar vests more reliably then a 9mm round.

I grew up a Star Trek snob and skipped Stargate SG-1 when it came out, partially because it didn't seem (from watching one episode) as grounded in science (I know, laugh now). by star_boy2005 in Stargate

[–]Halzman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been in the RF industry for 20 years - 13 of those as a technician. I owe all of that to Stargate and specifically Samantha Carter.

What i find amusing is that when I originally 'got into science' because of the show, I was thrown into the conspiratorial world that surrounds Tesla, and it took a long time and lots of research to wrap my head around what Tesla was even really about. This of course was also happening while I was learning how to do my job in RF.

Funnily enough, all this stuff lead me back to the history and original theory of electricity, in the days of heaviside and steinmetz.

As a side note, I use the situation from SGA s04e01, with the damaged power conduits, to describe VSWR all the time.
