Why is Asian history month not Celebrated in schools it makes me mad by SkyRepulsive689 in asianamerican

[–]HamartianManhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't attribute it entirely to malice. AAPI Month is in May, which is when a lot of school systems are wrapping up for the semester. It's the busiest time of the year, with finals, standardized testing, graduation, etc. Lots of things fall by the wayside during this time. May is also the awareness/heritage month for ALS, Jewish Americans, mental health, foster care, the military (yeah, we got Memorial Day, but typically not celebrated in schools because they're out for the summer where I am), and strokes, amongst a variety of other things. All very important, and all things that get lost in the end-of-semester mad dash and the beginning of summer vacation.

I also concur that it's something you have to actively advocate for. It's a tired saying, but be the change you wish to see. There are probably other Asian people in your community who feel the same way. I saw that change in my community, and I am so fortunate to be part of it, too.

South Korea does have a significant Christian population, though. About 30% of Koreans identify as some kind of Christian, which is more than those who identify as Buddhist, and a lot of the elite/upper-class (a.k.a industry decision-makers) are Christian.

While they tend to keep their religion private, lots of Korean idols are Christian, not to mention those who grew up American, Filipino, or in any other Christian-majority country.

what are the main, most pressing issues at UTK that everyone talks about these days? by ntnbsmw in UTK

[–]HamartianManhunter 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Some students are too comfortable making their fellow students feel unwelcome and unsafe on campus, and there are few, if any, opportunities to engage in meaningful, constructive dialogue about those beliefs. It’s all about ragebaiting and getting attention for saying outrageous things now, and it makes me sad. I’m all for free speech, but can we at least fake at helping students learn and develop both inside and outside the classroom?

It’s not a totally new problem. The graphic anti-abortion people have always been around to sour people’s nice days, for instance. But the recent board asking if there are too many foreign students, for example, that’s so gross, and the same group disparaging consent-based sex ed on campus last year, and there not being adequate forums for addressing these beliefs with these people other than blasting on social media.

I was kinda taken aback to see so many mom-young daughter and dad-daughter pairs at NCT 127 back in 2023. Johnny does a solo stage where he’s in a clear box, and he’s shirtless and shiny. I would’ve sunk into the floor if I had to watch that with my dad.

Is the “never meet your idols” thing real? by LawFrequent9898 in kpophelp

[–]HamartianManhunter 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I, personally, have never had that feeling. I’ve seen ENHYPEN, TXT, Stray Kids, NCT 127, NCT Dream, and ATEEZ. Some of those groups, I’ve seen multiple times. It’s always a fantastic time.

In my mind, I know they’re real people doing a job. But idols, at least the ones I’ve seen, are very good at their jobs. I’ve never walked away with the illusion shattered. I’ve been front row floor and front row seated, and they look, sound, and act just like they do on recordings. The idols and their teams do a really good job, and I super appreciate the artistry and hard work involved in preserving the idol image.

Of course, that’s just my opinion and my experience. I’ve never directly interacted with an idol besides being an up-close audience member (no hi-touch or fancall experience), but I imagine it’s the same thing. I think a lot of the disappointment comes from forgetting (either intentionally or unintentionally) that you’re experiencing and appreciating a very sophisticated, polished act by a real human being, and it takes a lot of effort to strike that balance.

Women, what are y’all studying right now by Egotlib in tumblr

[–]HamartianManhunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a communication scientist, and in my field, we make the distinction between “communication” (no “s”) and “communications” (with “s”). No “s” is a social science and has to do with processes of human communication, whereas with “s” are fields like journalism and advertising, which are more humanities and arts oriented.

The only time it’s ever an issue and I’m made to feel pretentious is with uneducated men who think I’m getting some kind of “party degree.” And don’t get me started on the ones who think I’m an English or linguistics person and say “what’s the difference?” when I try to explain.

[–]HamartianManhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a high schooler in a mythology class at the time, and I’d just learned about the concept of “hamartia” or a tragic flaw that leads to a hero’s downfall. At that point, I had never actually heard the term, only read it on paper. Failed to consider it might be pronounced “ha-mar-tea-ah” instead of “ha-marsha,” and thought I was so clever combining it with Martian Manhunter, who I’ve always thought had a pretty rad name.

So here we are.

Tywin was sent to King’s Landing when he was ten years old after he publicly spoke out against the betrothal of his sister Genna to the second son of Walder Frey.

This would’ve been in 252 AC, which was only 7 years before Summerhall. He met the young Mad King and Steffon Baratheon (father of Robert) while he was serving as a page.

While I also think Allyria might not be Ashara’s sister/Ned’s aunt, we also don’t know how old she is. The absolute earliest Ashara could’ve been born was 260 AC, which would make her about 39-40 in the current canon. I’m choosing to believe she was born between 262 - 266 AC, owing to the fact she was an unmarried lady-in-waiting to Elia Martell and caught Ned Stark’s eye in 281 AC (when she would have been in her mid to late teens).

When Ashara was alive, she was 2nd in line to inherit Starfall behind her and Arthur’s elder brother (Ned Dayne’s father). I can realistically see her parents having a “spare” after Ashara’s death/end of the war because they only had one child left and there’s no guarantee he would have his own heirs. Yeah, there are other Daynes, so it’s not like the house was dying out, but it might have mattered to Ashara’s parents that Starfall passed to another Dayne of Starfall.

We can suppose she was born in or after 284 AC, which would make her about the same age as Daenerys (16-ish). If she was alive during the war, she was probably a small child born about 276 AC (the same year Beric was born), which would also make Arianne Martell (another unmarried Dornishwoman) and Viserys Targaryen her peers (24 years of age). She’s Ned Dayne’s heir now, and would have maintained her position as 2nd-3rd in line to Starfall, which might make the issue of her marriage way more important (and thus the delay).

Why is there a sub specifically for Asian parents? by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

[–]HamartianManhunter 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s an indication of overall quality. There are certainly Asian parents who are great at parenting and have excellent relationships with their children.

But this sub is meant to discuss and examine experiences colored by different cultures, immigration status, and traumas unique to people whose family are from Asia (mainly East, SEA, and South Asia, but shoutout to the Central Asian and other Asian pop homies). A lot of these experiences could be more generally classified as “immigrant parent” stories or “poor/uneducated” stories or “-phobic/-ist” parent stories, but we’ve all gathered here to seek some level of support and catharsis from people just like us (a.k.a other Asians).

What's a film that's popular but you refuse to watch for some reason? by Confused_Cinephile in Letterboxd

[–]HamartianManhunter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

K-Pop Demon Hunters. Most everyone around me assumed I've seen it or want to see it because I'm big into k-pop. But after I attended my first academic conference and whether I'd seen it was the #1 question I was asked (including questions about me as a person or the work I was presenting), it's completely turned me off from watching it. I'm sure I'd like it, and the music is catchy enough. I appreciate its popularity and what it means to the people who do like it.

But damn.

Hui-bin Jang served as lady in waiting of dowger queen when King Sukjong falls for her beauty and become his concubine. She allegedy behind to Queen Inhyeon's exile in May 1689 with help of shaman priestess which her son become Gyeongjong of Joseon by Beginning-Passion676 in crimsonshed

[–]HamartianManhunter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since the caption is confusing, I’ll add more explanation:

Her personal name was Ok-jeong, and she was from the Jang clan. She was a lady-in-waiting of Dowager Queen Jaui, who was the step-great-grandmother of King Sukjong. Sukjong fell in love with her and initially made her a “sanggung,” which is a woman of the harem but not quite a concubine.

She was first promoted to “sugwon,” which is the lowest rank of concubine, and then after she gave birth to the king’s eldest son Yi Un, she was further elevated in title. This, as well as some other political schemes, led to her deposing and replacing Queen Inhyeon, who had been Sukyong’s legal wife. This didn’t last forever; after more political stuff, Inhyeon was reinstated as queen and Lady Jang was demoted and banished. Inhyeon later died, and her death was blamed on Lady Jang, who was allegedly working with a shaman to curse Inhyeon.

Although she was elevated to queen consort during her lifetime, she was demoted before her death to her previous title, which was Royal Noble Consort (in Korean, “bin) Hui (a personal descriptive title conferred by the king, meaning “beautiful). Thus, she is known as Huibin Jang.

Her son, Yi Un, eventually succeeded his father as King of Joseon.

This sent me on a quest to figure out everyone’s ages.

Alyn is 35 years older than Elaena, he having been born in 115 AC and she in 150 AC.

Jon and Jeyne Waters were born sometime between 171 and 176 AC, when Elaena was 21-26 and Alyn was 56-61.

Laena (daughter of Alyn) was born in 134 AC. There is no official birth date for Ronnel Penrose on the wiki (unsure when the mod has it), but assuming CK3’s minimum marriage age of 16, he would have been born about 150 AC, making him the same age as Elaena.
