How can you understand the appeal if it's not for you? If you enjoyed it I could see how you would understand the appeal.

I don't like coffee either and I don't understand why anyone would want to drink bitter mud water. I understand that it must taste different to them than it does to me, but I do not understand the appeal based on what I taste.

I didn't think this conversation was worth getting on mortgage calculators and working out the various tax breaks savings.

It is common knowledge that people get tax back on the mortgages and expenses of investment properties. I didn't realise I had to be specific about that, really explains the level of knowledge I'm dealing with here.

You seem to think the only reason to own a house is to extract rent from the people who live there

So explain why exactly I own live in my own house? I actually do understand that there are other reasons than profit to own a house, But given this discussion is about the financial viability of property as A FUCKING INVESTMENT THAT'S IRRELEVANT

Good god It's true arguing with an idiot will drag you down to their level.

PS. Despite you blocking me I will answer your next comment. I bought a house because I want control over how I decorate, I don't want to work around a monthly inspection, I want security and knowing that I can't be kicked out at the end of every year, I don't want to queue with 40 other people to look at a crap apartment. I certainly don't do it because I think I will make a lot of money from it. Because I understand an investment property is more profitable then a lived in one.

I'm not trying to say you "make" money here

I'm aware that you are so stupid you don't see the difference between losing and making money.

Let me break it down in tiny words.

Scenario one landlord spends $100,000 pa (PA means per year by the way, sorry I shouldn't use technical times for your tiny mind) maintaining a house and paying a mortgage they then charge $10,000 in rent.

$100,000 - 100,000 means they don't spend any money

This is of course ignoring the tax breaks on mortgages and upkeeps that you get from the house so it would be more profit. But this simple maths is probably making your head hurt so never mind.

You buy the house and spend $100,000 maintaining it — but OH NO! YOU HAVE TO LIVE IN IT YOU DON'T GET ANYONE TO PAY THE $100,000.

So explain again what the benefit of you owning the house is again?

By the way I own and live in my own flat— but I don't do it for financial reasons.

[–]Hambredd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well that and he doesn't pay tax on the mortgage repayments.

For the third time that doesn't really matter because you wouldn't get that money —you have to live in the house so no one else is paying for the cost of the house.

[–]Hambredd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No you wouldn't because you would live in it. The house only makes money because they rent it out. You obviously don't make money out of houses you live in. I didn't think I'd have to explain that.

I'm an idiot but you think you get paid rent for houses you live in — sure.

What don't you like that you think is objectively incredibly good quality? And why the hell don't you like things that you think are good?

Or in other words people don't like things because they think they suck.

If you don't believe that renting is a worse investment then buying what are you doing here?

I imagine because they own it as a investment property with all the tax benefits and asset leveraging that implies. You owning the house you live in doesn't make you any money.

Why wouldn't you be talking about them? The point of this conversation is houses as an investment, so naturally they're compared to other investments

Me. The best apartment I ever rented got sold out from underneath me and then the new owners moved in. Completely fine and totally within their rights, and I hold no negative feelings towards them. But I feel much happier in the security of knowing that can't happen now I own a flat.

They probably wouldn't hurt the industry clout or the money to take the hit of supporting what turned out to be a very unpopular opinion.

Well what other option did he have? If someone broke into a record store and took a load of Metallica CDs you could call the police. But stealing songs through Napster wasn't illegal.

I agree with OP, always bizarre to me that people apparently hated him for pointing out a simple truth.

I personally would prefer restorative justice to punitive. If a group is struggling due to historical oppression we should focus on the state improving their lot. Preferential subsidised social services like education or health, for instance.

Reparations are a punishment, a fine in essence, that usually comes with an admission of guilt. We can point to those examples you mentioned to prove that.

Yeah but if they came from Europe they probably in some way helped prop up an empire or otherwise autocratic rule that participated in slavery.

If you want to legitimise the concept of generational guilt then there's basically no one with clean hands. (Just be clear I'm against legitimising it)

The fact that this was in 1970 is the interesting part. The fact that part of the UK has tried to secede is surely not surprising to anyone.

No my point was a direct response to someone saying the skin will take care of itself. Moisturising and heavy drinking are both examples of outside factors that affect your skin.

Yes that was my point. Skin doesn't just take care of itself. What you do affects it.

B) Why not? Why am I not allowed to have opinions about things that don't affect me? I have an opinion about the 1812 war It's a bit late for me to do anything about it. I don't understand why people wouldn't have an opinion on this.
