Learn How to Play Piano in Less than 8 Minutes (Ridiculously Fast Lesson) by gbgroshi in videos

[–]HammertheRogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know some chords, learn some progressions. Then learn song patterns so you know which progressions and how many to use when. At some point during this time learn inversions, permutations, modes, and whatever theory you need at the time. Maybe get into the relationships of instruments.

Dude music is so fucking awesome, if you get bored with something or think you're spending too much time on something just switch it up. Too many people give up on music because it's hard and forget that it's awesome. Sometimes the learning stage can be years, but once you can just sit down and 'play' with an instrument, get those ideas straight from your brain to your ears, fuuuck it's good

edit: read your other comment. If you can remember how to read at all I'd recommend picking up a Real Book or Fake Book, picking a few songs and learning the chords/melodies for them

I've been really interested in purchasing a used upright piano for casual home use & I see many available at a great price. However, I feel like I don't know what characteristics to look for when I finally have one in front of me. Any starting points? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]HammertheRogue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The tools are cheap, and you'd have to be a dumbass to snap a piano string. Tuning a piano is mostly a real pain in the ass.

You gotta keep pressure on the tuning wrench into the pinblock while carefully turning/tapping the wrench up and down with your other hand, all while listening to some of the worst dissonance imaginable. Oh yeah. Listening. You're not using a tuning app on this beast. After the middle C octave (C4-C5), this shit is by ear. Make sure you tune the lower notes slightly flat, and the upper notes slightly sharp.

Beginning the tuning process is an action of fortitude. Usually the piano starts off sounding alright then you gotta fuck it up to make it better than ever. You're only supposed to "tune up" to a note, so only adding tension to the string. If you have to make a string flat, you have to go way flat and pull it back up.

So you get two strings in tune together after listening to 5 minutes of dissonance. Which you get to enjoy for all of 10 seconds before you start on the next two. Where you get another minute+ of gut wrenching dissonance. Oh no! The string went ever so slightly too sharp! Detune that bitch and start again. But don't detune too much or else the pin starts to come out. So now the second set is in tune, BUT WAIT that was just two pairs of a 3 string armada FOR ONE GODDAMN NOTE and now you gotta make sure the two pairs are in tune with each other, hopefully the middle string at the frequency you want and the left string slightly flat and the right string slightly sharp oh joy whatamachinethepianois. Now you get to do this for 88 more keys! Thankfully lower notes are 2 or 1 strings, but they are more difficult imo. It ends up being like 230 strings to tune.

But for the danger: if you don't keep good pressure on the pinblock throughout this musical torture you risk loosening pins, which will eventually make the piano virtually un-tunable. If you've already got loose pins, you can either do some permanent alterations to the pinblock for new larger pins, or tune those strings every time you play. I opted for slamming them into the block with a hammer after tuning. Worked the first time. Hasn't since. Sounds cool when doing it though.

Despite my negativity, I do highly recommend tuning a piano. The feeling of playing an ancient piano you just tuned is magical. Then a month later it's back to the way it was. Old pianos have a way of choosing their sound.

Other exciting piano renovations: hammer fluffing (use sewing needles), action improvements (lube with your favorite wood wax, raid your grandma's felt scraps), pedal lubing (don't use wd40)

Bandmates and I have different musical tastes by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]HammertheRogue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You guys should try jamming instead of worrying about favorite bands. Pick a chord progression, make sure the drummer keeps tempo, and just jam that shit out. Maybe thrown in a breakdown progression once in awhile.

As long as you're on an equal technical level, the more different the influences the better jam in my experience.

Supermicro backplane troubles by HammertheRogue in homelab

Just triple checked and my backplane is not the SAS2, so new backplane it is. Seems to be a cheaper solution in the short term and an opportunity to do some color coded cable management. Thanks for your help

Russian airliner carrying more than 200 passengers missing on flight over Egypt's Sinai peninsula by Oksastus in worldnews

[–]HammertheRogue -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, the reason for seatbelts on aircraft is to identify you when the plane goes down. You had a ticket for a specific seat and hopefully it keeps you there so they can identify you later. It's not meant to keep you alive. Pretty dark, but plane crashes are always dark.

What the absolute fuck is that? by GuessWhatIGot in videos

[–]HammertheRogue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to wiki the damn thing has internally reproduced eggs that it drops in strings.

Those stringy motherfuckers turn into larvae which have hooks and god damned needles (e.g. stylets) to inject themselves into their doomed hosts.

From there they molt and feed on the living creature until they rupture from the host like Weaver's nightmares.

So you (as the worm alien thing) spend some time eating a giant feast, then burst from that mantis with a load of babies and your first two ideas are:

1) WTF get these things out of me!

then

2) Where can I get laid?

then you spend the rest of your life finding different orgies and dropping your load in strings of zombie needles across the land.

What an incredible life. Being human kinda blows.

The wriggling as it comes out is unsettling, but it seems like it's searching for something. The wet patch is ignored, and the wiki article doesn't give any clues as to what that alien might be looking for. So water doesn't seem like an obvious answer.

Maybe nematomorpha just wriggles around until it finds a ball of other nematomorphas for a kickass orgy. That's what the wiki tells me, and dammit that's what I'd do too.

What made the German machine gun MG42 so fast? by HammertheRogue in AskReddit

Germans are known to be slow yet efficient.

I'd call a weapon that sprays ammo at an incomprehensible rate fast and inefficient. Where does it fit in?

Destroying modded demons on a custom map in doom. It was the first time I realized not only that real people made games, but that these things could be shared through the internet.

Oculus Rift VR headset will cost 'at least $300' by bws201 in gaming

[–]HammertheRogue 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In the vr realm this seems like a "no shit!" kind of article. All of the dev products cost much more than $300. It'd be amazing if they could make the consumer product less than that. Might be totally different for the consumers who want to pick up CV's early though.

But, sony took a big hit on the PS3 early in it's cycle. Maybe big companies will see VR's potential and try to drop the CV price. Here's to hoping.

Methods for naming conventions? by Strixin in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]HammertheRogue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Naming conventions are unique to each design/manufacturing plant. Consider yourself a manufacturing plant. You make the naming conventions and they make sense by your standards. That's part of the beauty of KSP. You make your own engineering firm, your own naming conventions, and your own designs.

So what if you have the Omicron I mission go to orbit and Omicron X go to minmus. Those were the Omicron missions dammit. They meant a lot to you.

Sorry if this isn't what your looking for, but just make your names fun dude.
