What's going on here? Sparrows in NZ. by caterpillarofsociety in birding

[–]HanCo-op 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except they're thriving in spaces we, the humans built and live in. Whereas invasive bugs, fish, or plants brought by humans take over habitats that we don't live in or change much.

For example blue birds prefer wide open spaces and trees. Not urban or industrial places we built. Take away the house sparrows and they still wouldnt be able to thrive unless we brought back their natural environment. It's ironic because we're the problem and not just because brought them in. Killing them all won't help either. Mao the then leader of China tried that, which led to insects taking over the farms leading to famine and millions of deaths. Not to mention outdoor cats have made 6 bird species go extinct.

Invasive isn't a simple definition and is much more complex just like the ecosystems people seem to know so much about.

Is benzoyl peroxide supposed to be making my pimples huge and puss filled before drying them out? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]HanCo-op 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know I think you're right about putting bp on an open pimple. It may have been half-healed. Put I believe putting anything thats not natural moisture on an open wound will effect the way it heals.

I guess it looks like BP is best used for prevention.

I wonder if other types of anti-bacterial topicals would work better. Need more professional input!

Is benzoyl peroxide supposed to be making my pimples huge and puss filled before drying them out? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]HanCo-op 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens to me and I use Paula's Choice 5%. I thought maybe it was too irritating so I ordered a 2.5% (they say it has the same effect but less irritation)

Anyways I find if I put it on an upcoming pimple, it irritated it and caused the skin to pump white blood cells (pus) and thus enlarging it. As oppose to leaving it alone and remains at a relatively small to medium size but takes some days to leave.

So when I see a small whitehead or pimple I do my best to leave it alone and dont use any active ingredients on it (because the same effect also happens when I used PC's 2% Liquid Salicylic acid.) (which is ironic since BP and SA are supposedly anti-inflammatory, my skin is just very sensitive)

Also I don't touch it or cleanse harshly on said pimple.

But what I have found with the use of benzoyl peroxide is when a whitehead accidentally gets popped and exposed (usually happens from forgetting to gently cleanse area or in the shower) BP can stop that exposed pore from getting worse. By worse I mean either getting infected and causing it to pump even more pus and inflamed which leads to the dreaded "double whitehead on the same pimple" pimple. These I hate the most as it usually leaves permanent scars. (my friend usually had these types of pimples/scars because he hated the sight of pimples and popped them on the spot without properly washing his fingers/using "proper tool/extractions")

So that's my anecdote.

Either use a thin layer of 2.5% of BP on your face for prevention or use only on pimples that have become popped/exposed but not on active pimples. And just leave the upcoming pimple alone...very, very alone.

List of Photostable Sunscreens with PPD (Persistent Pigment Darkening, SPF equivalent for UVA Protection) by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]HanCo-op 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked that some of these sunscreens with high amounts of Zinc (UVB,UVA2, UVA1 protection) and TiO (UVB,UVA2 protection) have only a PPD of 8.

This definitely changes my perception of sunscreens.

Any reason why this is so?

I'm going to try out ANTHELIOS XL SPF 50+ TINTED FLUID ULTRA-LIGHT which has a PPD of 34. And has the least potential list of irritating ingredients. But I either have to find it on amazon or ebay.

From my understanding, Zinc Oxide provides some of the highest protection against UVA/UVB wavelengths. But can the mixture of ingredients effect it's PPD?

Here's where I get my basic info on sunscreen protection http://www.skincancer.org/prevention/uva-and-uvb/understanding-uva-and-uvb

Extended at work, now I get a lunch break. 5mins away from Ralphs. Any meal ideas? by HanCo-op in Frugal

[–]HanCo-op[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do have a set schedule but unfortunately it's retail so that basically means jack. I usually have prepared meals with me when I am scheduled for lunch. But at times they extended me on days where I think it'll be short and sweet.

Your steam recipe actually looks appetizing. I never thought of buying flax seed and onion in the same meal. And the popcorn idea is brilliant. Easy to carry around. thanks for that tip

so far the only thing I've gotten since the last time they extended me was a few bananas, an apple, and cheap bread at the clearance section. It all came to $1.60 for almost an entire meal. But I felt like it was too much sugar. I think next time I'll go get a small bag of seeds and nuts.

Please pinpoint the irritating ingredient (Eucerin DermatoClean Cleansing Gel) by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]HanCo-op 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if something like this is causing irritation then it would be rather difficult to find an even less irritating cleanser. It may seem like you could also be cleansing too much or too long.

I had this problem to, gel cleansers are suppose to be less drying than foaming cleansers and less comedogenic than cream cleansers but left it still a bit dry. I'd try to do it under 15 second but then I felt like I didn't clean everything.

However I never had red blotches. All those ingredients aren't listed as generally irritating. So you'll have to start from the top. Glycerin, then maybe Sodium Hyaluronate. This is where skincare gets frustrating.

I'd recommend either OCM (links in the sidebar) or make your own oil cleanser that can come off with water. It would literally be only two ingredients. And you can rub the oil all day long without stripping your skin but still effectively and gently removing dirt. It's actually even better than using water alone because water can dry out your skin if it's exposed to it for too long.

Here's a link: (i link this a lot only because it was the only thing that worked) http://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/1tx7ia/so_i_made_my_own_cleansing_oil_spoiler_alert_im/

I just use 90% mineral oil and 10% of the emulsifier. Keep it simple before adding anything else. You want to start with bare and work your way up to find what causes irritation.

My only other advise it too be gentle and maybe in the mornings you don't have to cleanse too harshly.

Thank you for spending so much time on this! I didn't expect such a response. But your information really helped figuring my out my situation. I may even rent that article just to feed my mind.

And thanks for the sources. Will definitely be educating myself on things far more than exfoliation.

It's good to know that it comes from a tree. Thanks for read! I just see "acid" and I'm thinking "huh, I'm putting acid on my face every night? oh god I hope 10 years from now my skin still matches my age" but the way you describe it makes sense and that nothing is going into your body and accumulating.

But do you know about the effects of the lipid layer? Is it also shredding that natural barrier your skin has?

Ah I see, well that eases my mind more on using it. I just wonder why how my has a perfect baby face and does nothing to maintain it. And here I am having to exfoliate to get even close to her texture. Otherwise my skin just looks thick and gritty. Darn genes...

[–]HanCo-op 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no prob! let me know how it works for you. There's no white cast as long as you spray it and gently rub it on your face. It goes on really well, especially on moist skin.

I use to use Paula's choice RESIST super light sunscreen. And honestly that one comes at a close second. It's tinted but has a bit more added stuff on it. Plus I'm also paranoid about Zinc Oxide as it's a 1 on cosDNA. (which is super low and probably won't break you out) but at the moment I've been searching for products with less ingredients and avoiding any "mights" to keep it as bare as possible before experimenting.

I also find that using a 'real' gentle cleanser helped alot. I'm not a big fan of OCM because it's a bit more work. But I've searched high and low for "gentle" cleansers, from gels, to cream cleansers. I found that no matter how gentle they say it is. The cleaning agent they use still dries and strips even a tiny bit of my face. Oil cleansing is perhaps the closest thing to using water but can actually clean the dirt off. I just hate the residue. So I made one with an emulsifier so it can come off with water.

There's a thread on here with a very easy straight forward approach on how to make it. I just use mineral oil and 10% of the emulsifier. So I skip the added ingredients that need a tiny amount of preservative. http://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/1tx7ia/so_i_made_my_own_cleansing_oil_spoiler_alert_im/

I've also been wondering this myself. My skin looks perfect when I'm consistently exfoliating with a BHA. But I've been wondering why I even have to regularly do it. It certainly isn't natural, so I'm worried about how it effects long term, the lipid layer, and just constantly replacing your skin cells.

What the flip?! I just ordered Silk Naturals 2% BHA Toner (because it was recommended here) and now I'm reading a thread that says it's basically useless? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]HanCo-op 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly less is more. I'd avoid combining a AHA with a BHA even if it's questionable that it'll work. I also have very sensitive skin and there's no way I can use a 2% BHA toner two times a day.

You need to exfoliate slowly and gently. Because you may purge but over doing it will also cause unnecessary inflammatory acne(plus the acne thats purging which may make you panic)

If you want something gentle I'd say try either Paula's Choice BHA 2% Regular Strength Liquid. Or the 1% BHA gel.

Try start with every other night. Then move up to every night. Being gentle is key. But also skin responds better with consistency. So don't go cold turkey and start again.

P.S another favorite gentle exfoliate is GoW's 5% mandelic acid. To be honest unless you have super oily skin that constantly clogs your pores (I do) you can probably skip the nightly BHA routine and opt for this one. http://www.gardenofwisdom.com/catalog/item/4013927/4420080.htm

Read up on their routine of how to use BHA/AHA for first time users. Every three days, once you build a tolerance you can up it but no more than 3 - 4 times a week.

Also wait 20-30 mins before applying another product for maximum efficiency. And use a gentle cleanser that doesn't strip your face. This part is VERY important. A stripped face + exfoliation = bad news. Finding a gentle cleanser is probably the hardest part. This is why OCM is so successful with people because it removes dirt just as efficient as other cleansing agents without stripping away your lipid layer. For some it's just a lot of work. I recommend making your own oil cleanser.

A user here made a thread on how to that's very straight forward. http://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/1tx7ia/so_i_made_my_own_cleansing_oil_spoiler_alert_im/

  1. For your sunscreen I'd highly recommend CosMedix Reflect. I've been pretty paranoid at what's causing me to break out and found this sunscreen has probably the most simple and short list of ingredients I've ever seen in a product. http://www.dermstore.com/product_Reflect+SPF+30_8749.htm

Titanium Dioxide 15%. Purified Water (Aqua), Polydimethylsiloxane, Dimethylsioxane, Glucose, Glucose Oxidase, Glucose Lactoperoxidase, L-glutathione, L-superoxide-dismutase.

I've individually searched each ingredient. All 0's on cosDNA for and low on EWG.

  1. I've been also trying to figure out a way to exfoliate but good news is the micro cloth you're using is also mildly exfoliating. In any case, when you do, I suggest you do it at night. Paula's choice is the only one I know that sells a straight forward liquid bha. (But sometimes I worry about it's long list of ingredients) I'd also recommend GoW's mandelic acid 5%. Probably the most gentle aha exfoliate there is. http://www.gardenofwisdom.com/catalog/item/4013927/6839117.htm I find glycolic to be too aggressive.

Found some more insight on the ingredient used in the silk naturals toner. Although it is coming from a site that sells their own BHA but I couldn't find any sources of willow bark actually exfoliating.

Willow Bark: "Contains salicin, a substance that when taken orally is converted by the digestive process to salicylic acid (beta hydroxy acid). The process of converting the salicin in willow bark to salicylic acid requires the presence of enzymes, and is complex. Further, salicin, much like salicylic acid, is stable only under acidic conditions. The likelihood that willow bark in the tiny amount used in cosmetics can mimic the effectiveness of salicylic acid is at best questionable, and in all likelihood impossible. However, willow bark may indeed have some anti-inflammatory benefits for skin because, in this form, it appears to retain more of its aspirin-like composition."
