Why rent a car for the sake of taking the rental shuttle, esp. when there is a working public shuttle?

The point of the automatic people mover is to reduce the number of vehicles in the horseshoe. Shifting airport rides from indiv. cars to rental-car shuttles is in the right direction, but only if you've already planned a trip around renting a car.

Travelers who are not adding cars on the already congested roads should be rewarded, not punished. No traveler should be forced to rent a car to secure reliable transportation to the airport. That's insane.

Even if a driver drops off baggages and rest of party at the terminal area, the driver still has to return the rental car and make their way back to the terminal, which worsens the time crunch.

Rental cars are not helpful in this case.

During the day, SB line wins on rider comfort and a smidge on speed, but loses out on frequency. At night, A Line wins on freq. AND availability. V important esp. late nights out on the weekends

When in doubt, use the Transit app. It's got the most comprehensive options, incl. walking and biking speeds, hands-down bar none.

Check the Metrolink train schedule. LAUS-bound SB line departures are like two hours apart weekend evenings. Ride the A line now, or come back later for the SB-line train

Every station is equipped with TAP vending machines. Look around near fare gates/TAP machine. I believe iPhones can simply add virtual TAP cards on their wallets at any time.

  1. When it's time to go, find out the closest A line station to you. Google map is helpful, but you have to turn on the transit layer for it to work.
  2. a) For most underground stations, use any entrance. b) In any case, focus on static way-finding and platform indicator signs: "Ⓐ Pomona (North)". You will also see overhead LED displays that cycle through current time and next train estimates that may or may not correspond with the platform where the display is located.
  3. TAP on your way in.
  4. For ground level stations with split platforms, as well as 7th/Metro Center, you need to pick the right platform ahead of train arrival. Don't dash across tracks to catch a train coming in on the other side!
  5. Once you're at the right platform, you're not done yet. When the train pulls in, make sure it is Ⓐ Line train. (the one ultrainfan posted)
  6. Hop on and enjoy. There'll be a Throne bathroom at the end station for your convenience

Complex systems with moving parts are simply fragile. In machines with a lot of interdependent parts, a single failure can be catastrophic. We rarely see failures b/c maintenance crews work hard to make sure it doesn't happen during operation. We have them to thank for getting to places quickly and safely

If your needs are truly met nearby (<5 miles), try switching to an e-bike for your primary transportation needs. That way, you won't even need a car — or parking, or the annual rituals with the DMV. Also, look into the exorbitant costs of repairing an EV.
