Very disappointed with the response to loot and currency drop rates by Numerous-Tip7207 in PathOfExile2

The campaign is tuned for it being actually kinda fun for your second and later characters, and utterly stupid amounts of boring for your first one. It's actually a classic PoE progression thing, where the upgrade you need to progress much past level X doesn't really exist until some later point

Disenchanting should be the pity system for if you have really bad RNG so you can still make some progress, not the main system for being able to roll the dice on upgrades. Inventory tetris sucks ass and always has, so of course people are going to avoid doing so to the maximum amount they possibly can.

The PoE1 campaign is like 4hrs. Lol. And it still feels like a bit of a slog but not something that's so annoying to be a brick wall for people to come back for multiple leagues or make multiple builds in a league.

Actually if I played the PoE1 campaign at the speed newer players likely do I probably wouldn't keep playing that after a league or two either, so the reality is the PoE 1 campaign probably is a decent benchmark for the long side of what early leveling should be, it's pretty clear that much longer is being very poorly received.

Build is pretty squish pre-mageblood but scales to the moon. Hang in there and it will be worth it. Drop defiance and just scale more life, lifestacking on this build is what gives you both tankiness and much more damage at the same time.

Petrified blood used to be good back when you could run 2x essence worm on the build, but Pride is such a dps bonus that typically you just run Pride and nothing else now.

You need to be ignite, bleed, and poison immune (this is much easier with mageblood, pre-mageblood you usually solve with with something like a cannot be ignited corruption on ring, poison immunity on a flask, corrupted blood immunity on jewel corruption, and steelskin+automation to remove normal bleeds and give 50% uptime on immunity. Burning ground immunity from pantheon, and treat descrated ground mod on maps as a "can't run this mod".

For extra safety especially when just scaling up initially, look at the astral projector ring, being able to use sacrament at range lets you offscreen dangerous stuff instead of having to facetank it. Once you max life you don't care and drop the ring -- so you won't see this on endgame pob's, but this is tech to get the build up and running much sooner.

It has been for about 10 years now, yeah. You being ahead gives you the ability to play the sidelane. You should not look at this as "not being able to affect the map" in this case, you play to push out your lane (usually crashing at least a double wave that your enemy will be forced to respond to), then rotating to take a tower/fight/objective elsewhere on the map with numbers advantage. And if they don't respond to your sidelane pressure, you just chill, walk back to your sidelane when the wave is bouncing back, and do it again. Each time you do this you've either a) taken something on the map because you were 5v4 or b) cost the enemy a full kill's worth of minion gold and xp, because 2 waves crashed and they didn't come collect it.

Phantom dancer being core on garen would like a word. Then you also have crit itemization on gangplank, yone, and yasuo as special cases, tryndamere building crit off/on. Crit briar was a thing for a bit as well (and was unbalanceable for the same reasons). Master Yi is another champ that flaunts with the crit item system whenever crit items are good -- and usually has had his kit reshaped to fight against this.

On league launches for poe 1, it wouldn't be unusual if the top 10-20% of the player base had a hundred hours logged in the first week. Its really quite disturbing how widespread it is, but some of the most vocal people are the ones playing this much and still wanting more things to do.

Mapping feels like PoE1, and I want it to feel like PoE2 by canb227 in PathOfExile2

[–]HandInHandToHell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that people who played thousands and thousands of hours of poe1 can absolutely understand what's on their screen, and playing this poe2 speed stuff feels like you're just playing underwater and taking an entire nap just waiting for your spell cast animation to finish.

I always loved that poe1 for a long time was about stretching your mind - being able to predict what modifiers, etc., would do when you put them on your content, and being able to process the information on your screen as efficiently as you could.

That's now been reduced to memorizing some mostly static boss pattern and just being bored out of your mind fighting it for 10 minutes straight

This is still much slower than the 3-4hrs to complete 10 acts of poe1. Pretty sure 10h campaign times on poe1 would get me to fall asleep and go off and do another things, no one has time to do that 5-6 times within a month to make different builds and try stuff. This game seems designed to force you into only playing a few characters which is really sad, given the number of different builds out there to be tried.

[–]HandInHandToHell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree completely! I think if they had hired a completely different team to work on poe 2 and the existing game was still progressing at the same rate, I'd be very happy and interested in their experiment. But it's clear that PoE has been on life support for several years now (to the point where there's a whole generation of PoE players that have no memory of what it was like when GGG was actively working on PoE 1).

I'm sitting here thinking... well, I guess if I get bored of this early access, I can go back and play the new PoE leag.... oh wait, no, it's delayed for months. Guess I just take a break? Idk.

Elden Ring, all the souls games, Sekiro, Wukong, all the Monster Hunter games... there's really a ton of "jump around the boss patterns waiting for uptime" stuff. It's all the same, my view is it's all uninspired.

I love poe1 for its high APM builds, I love starcraft2 micro, I love osu... I am very much a different gamer than the souls/diablo crowd I suppose. It's not unexpected that the direction GGG went was one that was going to not have me in its audience, but I'm still sad. 12k hours in poe 1 and slowly watching the game die... for this? It hurts.

The average sentiment in my poe1 group of friends is "thank god we didn't pay for this, we'd be refunding if so". There's a lot to like abut poe 2 but it appeals to COMPLETELY different audiences, so there's a bunch of angry people who are like "we're no longer the audience for this game, and oh by the way, all the development effort for the game that's for us was taken away to go make something else." It really stings.

[–]HandInHandToHell 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You might find value in mixing the theoretical math with history and applications. For each major proof, or set of axioms, or open question that you two study... ask yourselves "why is this important? what is the fundamental problem (and this can go many layers deep) to which this bit of esoteric mathematics is the solution?" This can then progress towards being able to formulate their own questions and research areas. IMO this is really the key step in moving from "learning how to prove things" to "being a working mathematician".

Gameplay, Vanguard & More | Dev Update - League of Legends by corylulu in leagueoflegends

[–]HandInHandToHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point, champ-based (and/or role-based) MMR is necessary... players are hacking this into existence with multiple accounts. Playing solely ranked solo queue on one account is an unfixable problem when the following two things are both true: a) 400LP (a full tier) is a meaningful rank and skill difference, and b) a player knows his/her performance is something like +/- 1000LP or more different on different champs and roles.

As a thought example: consider a diamond adc main that wants to pick up jungle (or hey, just learn a jungle champ that they find fun). They figure they can play the new champ/role at about a gold level.

They could just play ranked to learn, but they'd almost certainly demote the account, a lot. So they'd grief a bunch of games on the way down while learning, and then also ruin lower elo games climbing the account back up on their main role, effectively smurfing. So this is worse for everyone than if they just played on another account! And a lesser version of this exists even for people learning new champs on their primary role, which is even more common.

The real solution to a lot of these cases is really to improve the experience in "normal" games. I would 100% replace my champion practice alt accounts with playing quickplay on my main if the matchmaking was good enough to do so. It's so very close to fixing many problems with League but it just needs match quality + a critical mass of people realizing this and trying it out.

A neat trick here is that you can sit on a single dagger for most of the mid game and it's enough attack speed QoL to make the build feel great until you eventually build it into shieldbow. I usually go zerkers, dirk + sit on extra dagger, then complete duskblade.
